Queen vs king: the dimensional case
One number separates these two beds, and it is not the one most people are worried about.

Short answer
A king (76 x 80 in / 193 x 203 cm) is 16 in (41 cm) wider than a queen (60 x 80 in / 152 x 203 cm) and not one inch longer. If your problem is height, a king solves nothing and a California king (72 x 84 in / 183 x 213 cm) solves it. If your problem is width, the king gives each sleeper 38 in instead of 30 in, and takes 8 in (20 cm) off the clearance on each side of the room to do it. Below 12 ft (3.66 m) of room width, buy the queen.

The king is 16 in (41 cm) wider. It is 0 in longer. Everything else on this page follows from those two figures.
That second figure settles the most common reason people upgrade. If anyone in the bed is over about 6 ft (183 cm), the complaint is usually feet at the edge of the mattress, and a king does not move that edge by a millimetre. A queen, a full and a king are all 80 in (203 cm) long. Only the California king and a handful of European sizes go further.
What 16 in actually buys#
Halve it. Each sleeper goes from 30 in (76 cm) to 38 in (97 cm).
Those two numbers have useful physical equivalents:
- 30 in is a little wider than a US crib mattress at 27 in (69 cm). Two adults on a queen each have roughly a cot's worth of space.
- 38 in is a standard twin mattress, exactly. A king is literally two twins pushed together, which is why it is also sold as a split king.
A relaxed adult sleeping supine occupies about 22 to 26 in (56 to 66 cm) of shoulder width plus arms. So a queen is not cramped for two still sleepers; it is cramped for two who move. The 8 in per person is bought almost entirely to absorb rolling, starfishing and one person sitting up to read. If neither of you moves much, the queen is not undersized, and the money is better spent on the mattress specification.
What it costs the room#
Add a frame allowance of 2 in (5 cm) each side, which is typical for a slim upholstered or metal platform. A queen frame is about 64 in (163 cm) wide; a king frame about 80 in (203 cm).

The rule that comes out of the table: the king takes 8 in (20 cm) off each side. A room that offers a generous 30 in (76 cm) beside a queen offers a marginal 22 in (56 cm) beside a king. The pinch point is not the middle of the bed. It is the nightstand. A typical nightstand is 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm) deep, so in an 11 ft room with a king you have 26 in of side gap and a 20 in nightstand in it, leaving 6 in (15 cm) at the head of the bed. California king: the answer to the length question#
72 x 84 in (183 x 213 cm). Four inches narrower than a king, four inches longer.
For a sleeper of 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) or more, that swap is the whole point. Allow 4 in (10 cm) of mattress above the head and below the feet as the minimum for a mattress that does not feel like a shelf: an 80 in mattress therefore tops out at a 6 ft (183 cm) sleeper, and an 84 in mattress at 6 ft 4 in (193 cm).
The costs are real:
- Bedding is a separate size again, stocked far less widely than king.
- Each sleeper drops to 36 in (91 cm), 2 in less than a king.
- The extra 4 in of length comes out of your foot clearance, so a room that gave 36 in (91 cm) at the foot now gives 32 in (81 cm).
In a long, narrow bedroom the California king is often the better geometric fit anyway, because narrow rooms have length to spare and width to protect.
Split king and adjustable bases#
An adjustable base that raises head and feet independently for two people has to be two bases, so the mattress has to be two mattresses. A split king is two twin XL units, each 38 x 80 in (96.5 x 203 cm), under a single king headboard and a single king fitted-sheet arrangement (usually two twin XL fitted sheets plus a king flat sheet or duvet over the top).
What to know before choosing it:
- The centre seam is real. A foam gap filler and a full-width topper reduce it to a firmness change rather than a gap.
- Two twin XL mattresses go up a stair that no king mattress will manage. This is the quiet advantage.
- A California king does not split the same way. Its halves would be 36 x 84 in, which is not a stock size, so split California kings are sold as a matched pair rather than as standard twin XLs.

Queen is the highest-volume size in North America, so it carries the widest choice and the deepest discounting. King bedding sits a tier above on price, appears in fewer patterns, and a king duvet is often past the honest capacity of a 7 kg (15 lb) domestic washing machine. None of this is a reason to avoid a king. It is a reason to buy the second set of sheets at the same time as the bed, while the size is fresh in your mind.
Getting it into the room#
A king mattress is a 76 in (193 cm) wide rigid-ish slab. That is the number that fails on a stair, not the 80 in length, because the length can point up the flight while the width has to negotiate the turn.
The escape routes, in order of preference: a roll-packed foam or hybrid king that arrives compressed in a box; a split king in two twin XL pieces; or delivery through a window or over a balcony, which is a paid specialist job. How to settle it in ten minutes#
- Measure the room's short dimension. Subtract 80 in (203 cm) for a king frame and halve the remainder. If the answer is under 26 in (66 cm), stop: it is a queen.
- Measure the taller sleeper. Over 6 ft (183 cm), the shortlist is California king or a queen with a footboard-free frame, not a king.
- Tape 76 x 80 in on the floor, then a second rectangle 16 in narrower. Walk both. Open every door and drawer in the room against each outline.
- Walk the delivery route with a tape and find the narrowest turn. Write down both passage widths at that turn.
- Run the finished layout through the bedroom layout checker, and check the size against the full table in bed sizes and the room each one needs.
If steps 1 and 2 disagree, step 2 wins. Width is a comfort preference you adapt to. Length is a hard limit you meet every night.
Frequently asked questions#
Is a king bed longer than a queen?
No. Both are 80 in (203 cm) long. The king is 16 in (41 cm) wider and identical in length, so it does nothing at all for someone whose feet hang off the end. The only standard US size that adds length is the California king at 84 in (213 cm), which is 4 in longer and 4 in narrower than a king.
How much bigger is a king than a queen?
16 in (41 cm) of width, which is 8 in (20 cm) per sleeper. A queen gives each of two adults 30 in (76 cm), roughly the width of a crib mattress. A king gives each 38 in (97 cm), which is exactly the width of a standard twin. In area the king is 6,080 sq in against the queen's 4,800, about 27 per cent more mattress.
What size room do you need for a king bed?
12 x 11 ft (3.66 x 3.35 m) as a sensible minimum. An 80 in (203 cm) wide king frame in a 144 in room leaves 32 in (81 cm) on each side. In an 11 ft (132 in) room it leaves 26 in (66 cm), which you can walk down but which will not take a nightstand and a walkway at the same time.
Should a tall person get a king or a California king?
A California king, without hesitation. At 84 in (213 cm) long it gives a 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) sleeper about 8 in (20 cm) of spare length instead of 4 in. A regular king is the same 80 in as a queen and a full, so trading up to it for legroom is money spent on the wrong axis.
Will a king mattress fit up my stairs?
Often not, if it is a sprung mattress. A king is 76 in (193 cm) wide, and a 12 in (30 cm) thick mattress turning a right angle between two 36 in (91 cm) passages has a theoretical limit near 78 in. Add handrails and the limit drops to about 65 in (165 cm). Foam roll-packed and split king models avoid the problem entirely. Check the furniture delivery path before ordering.
Is a split king the same as a king?
Same overall footprint, different construction. A split king is two twin XL mattresses (38 x 80 in / 96.5 x 203 cm each) side by side, which is how adjustable bases with independent head and foot articulation are built. The trade is a seam down the centre line, usually bridged with a foam wedge and a single fitted topper.
Does a king cost more to run than a queen?
Yes, and the recurring cost is bedding rather than the mattress. King fitted sheets, duvets and protectors are a price tier above queen, are stocked in fewer patterns, and a king duvet frequently exceeds the drum capacity of a domestic washing machine. Budget for two sets from the start.
