Dining room dimensions
A dining room is a table plus a ring of empty floor. The ring is bigger than almost anyone expects.
Short answer
Allow 24 in (61 cm) of table edge per person and 36 in (91 cm) of clear floor on every side of the table, rising to 44 to 48 in (112 to 122 cm) where people walk behind seated diners. A six-seat table therefore needs a room about 11 x 13 ft (3.4 x 4.0 m).

Dining rooms are the easiest room to get numerically wrong, because the table is the only thing you shop for and the clearance is the thing that decides whether the room works. A 72 in (183 cm) table is a perfectly good table. In a 10 ft (3.0 m) wide room it is a wall you edge around.
The arithmetic is simple enough to do on the back of an envelope:
Room dimension = table dimension + (2 x clearance)
With 36 in (91 cm) of clearance, a 72 x 38 in table needs a room of at least 144 x 110 in, which is 12 x 9 ft 2 in (3.7 x 2.8 m). If anyone has to walk behind a seated diner, the clearance goes to 44 in (112 cm) and the room needs 13 ft 4 in (4.1 m) in the long direction.
Why the clearance is what it is#
A dining chair needs 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) to slide back far enough for a person to stand. Add the depth of the seated person's chair when pushed back and you are at roughly 36 in from the table edge before anyone can pass behind. That is the whole derivation: 36 in lets a person get in and out, 44 in lets a second person walk past while they do it.
