A living room is a conversation circle with a screen bolted to one side of it. Almost every layout problem comes from those two things fighting.

Short answer

The living room runs on four numbers: 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) from sofa to coffee table, 4 to 10 ft (1.2 to 3 m) between facing seats, 30 in (76 cm) of circulation around the group, and a rug wide enough to catch at least the front legs of every seat.

The living room is the room people most often fill by accumulation: a sofa bought for a previous flat, a coffee table chosen for its top rather than its footprint, a television sized by the deal that was on. The result is usually a room whose furniture is individually fine and collectively 6 in (15 cm) too big in every direction.

Laying one out properly takes four decisions, in this order.

1. Fix the conversation distance first#

People stop talking comfortably somewhere past 10 ft (3 m). Below about 4 ft (1.2 m) they feel crowded. That band, which comes out of Edward T. Hall's work on proxemics, is the real brief for a seating group: every seat should be able to see and hear every other seat inside it. A sofa and two chairs at 7 ft (2.1 m) across the group is a room. The same pieces pushed to the walls of a 20 ft (6 m) room is a waiting area.

2. Then the coffee table#

Sixteen to eighteen inches from the cushion face, not the sofa frame. This is the single most searched living room dimension and the full page on it explains why the band is so narrow: below 14 in (36 cm) you cannot stand up without turning your knees sideways, above 20 in (51 cm) you have to lean out of the seat to reach a cup.

3. Then circulation#

Thirty inches minimum around the outside of the group, 36 in (91 cm) if the route also serves a door. See walkway widths.

4. Only then the screen#

The television is sized by seating distance, not by wall width. At 4K, a comfortable field of view puts the diagonal at roughly the seating distance divided by 1.2 to 1.6. From 9 ft (2.7 m), that is a 65 to 90 in screen, which surprises people who assume bigger is always wrong.
