Outdoor room dimensions

Outdoors there is no wall to stop a chair, and every clearance grows because of it.

Short answer

Size an outdoor room from the furniture outwards, then add a margin. A six-seat table at 72 x 36 in (183 x 91 cm) with 36 in (91 cm) of chair pull on all four sides needs 12 x 9 ft (3.7 x 2.7 m) of clear working area, and paving has to run about 12 in (30 cm) past that on every side because a chair leg cannot sit on an edge. That gives 14 x 11 ft (4.3 x 3.4 m) of finished surface.

An outdoor room is built from the same furniture as an indoor one and then given larger numbers, because every constraint that a wall used to supply has to be supplied by the surface itself. The order of decisions runs from the ground up: the size and shape of the surface, then the guard and the steps that make it legal, then the fixed equipment that cannot be moved once poured, then the overhead structure, then light.

The surface is measured to the last useful inch, not the last paved one#

A patio does not stop where the paving stops. Set a chair on the outermost slab and its back legs land on the edge, where the bedding is weakest, so people shuffle inward. Treat the last 12 in (30 cm) of any paved surface as margin and plan furniture inside the rest. On a deck the same loss happens against the guard, where a chair back hits the rail.

Everything else follows from the arithmetic of the seat. A six-seat table needs 36 in (91 cm) behind each chair to stand up and step away, which is more than the 30 in used indoors because outdoor chairs are heavier and paving is not flat, and that is why the dining sets in outdoor dining table sizes and clearances carry different figures from the same set indoors. Lounge seating is bulkier still: an outdoor sofa runs 34 to 38 in (86 to 97 cm) deep once cushions are on, against 32 to 36 in indoors, which is set out in outdoor sofa, lounger and cushion dimensions.

Those totals are the reason patio sizes and layouts starts with the furniture rather than the plot, and the reason a balcony under 5 ft (1.5 m) deep holds a chair but never a meal.

Guards at 36 in, 1,100 mm and the 4 in sphere#

Two dimensions on a raised surface are not yours to choose. In US dwellings a guard is required once the walking surface is more than 30 in (76 cm) above the grade below, and it must be 36 in (91 cm) high, measured from the walking surface. In the UK, Approved Document K asks for 1,100 mm (43 in) at balconies and edges above ground floor level, and 900 mm (35 in) alongside a stair in a dwelling. Both systems use the same opening test: a 4 in (100 mm) sphere must not pass through the guard anywhere, including the triangle at the bottom of a stair. Those figures, with joist spans and board gaps, sit in deck sizes, railing heights and baluster spacing.

Outdoor steps are the one place where copying the indoor stair is wrong. A garden step wants a 6 in (152 mm) rise and a 14 in (356 mm) tread, shallower and deeper than the 7.75 in and 10 in that stair dimensions allow indoors, because the approach is at walking pace, the surface is wet at times, and the rhythm has to work in both directions without a handrail. Garden path widths and outdoor step dimensions gives the rise and run pairs that hold, and the same shallow logic is what makes a ramp work in ramp slopes, lengths and landings.

Counters at 36 in and the 17 ft circle a fire pit needs#

Anything on a foundation is decided before the furniture, because it cannot be nudged in July. An outdoor kitchen counter is 36 in (91 cm) high and 30 in (76 cm) deep, with 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm) of landing space each side of a built-in grill and a working aisle of 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm) rather than the 36 in you might accept inside, because doors open outward into weather and people gather behind the cook. The full set is in outdoor kitchen dimensions and clearances.

A fire pit sets a circle, not a footprint. Seat faces sit 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) back from the outer face of the pit, so a 36 in (91 cm) pit with 30 in deep benches occupies a circle around 17 ft (5.2 m) across, which is more area than the dining set: see fire pit clearances and seating dimensions.

Six thousand pounds of hot tub, and 12 in of soil#

A hot tub is heavier than anything else in the garden, at 5,000 to 6,000 lb (2,300 to 2,700 kg) filled and occupied, so the pad comes first and the hot tub dimensions, pad size and clearances have to include the service face. Planters take their depth from roots, 12 in (30 cm) for vegetables and 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) for shrubs, and their width from reach: 4 ft (1.2 m) if you can walk both sides, 30 in (76 cm) against a wall, which is where planter and raised bed dimensions starts.

A pergola at 8 ft, and the shade the rafters cast#

A pergola is sized against the room below it, not against the house. Clear height under the beams starts at 8 ft (2.44 m) and 9 to 10 ft (2.7 to 3.0 m) suits anything over a dining table, with rafters at 12 to 24 in (30 to 61 cm) centres to give useful midday shade; pergola dimensions, heights and rafter spacing covers the span and shade arithmetic together, because the two are one decision.

Path lights at 14 to 24 in, lanterns at 66 in#

Light is the last layer and the one most often bought at the wrong height. Path lights belong at 14 to 24 in (36 to 61 cm) and 6 to 8 ft (1.8 to 2.4 m) apart so the pools of light overlap at ankle level, wall lanterns centre at 66 to 72 in (168 to 183 cm), and step lights go under the nosing rather than above it. Outdoor lighting heights and spacing sets out the levels by task, and the underlying illuminance targets, along with the guard and stair clauses quoted above, are indexed in the standards and codes reference.

Frequently asked questions#

How big does a patio need to be for a table of six?

About 14 x 11 ft (4.3 x 3.4 m) of finished paving. The table is 72 x 36 in (183 x 91 cm), the chair pull is 36 in (91 cm) on each side, and the paving runs 12 in (30 cm) past the chairs so that no leg lands on an edge. Drop the margin and you have built a 12 x 9 ft patio that seats four in practice.

How high does a deck railing have to be?

Thirty-six inches (91 cm) in US dwellings, measured from the walking surface to the top of the guard, and it is required once the deck is more than 30 in (76 cm) above the grade below. The IBC and most commercial work use 42 in (107 cm). In the UK, Approved Document K sets 1,100 mm (43 in) for balconies and edges above ground floor and 900 mm (35 in) alongside stairs in a dwelling.

What is the gap allowed between deck balusters?

A 4 in (100 mm) sphere must not pass through, which in practice means a clear gap of 3.5 to 3.9 in (89 to 99 mm) between balusters and a maximum of 4 in at the bottom rail and at any triangular opening on a stair. The same sphere rule appears in the IRC and in Approved Document K, so a rail designed to one usually passes the other.

How far should seating be from a fire pit?

Between 30 and 36 in (76 and 91 cm) from the outer face of the pit to the front edge of the seat, which puts a seated body about 5 ft (1.5 m) from the flame. A 36 in pit with that gap and 30 in (76 cm) deep seats needs a circle roughly 17 ft (5.2 m) across. Keep the whole assembly 10 ft (3.0 m) from any structure or overhanging branch unless the local fire code says more.

How wide should a garden path be?

Thirty-six inches (91 cm) for a main route one person walks, 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm) where two people walk side by side or a wheelbarrow has to pass a planter, and 24 in (61 cm) for a secondary route between beds. Add 6 in (15 cm) where planting will spill over the edges, because a path is measured clear of foliage, not clear of paving.

How deep does a balcony need to be to be usable?

Five feet (1.5 m) is the working minimum: a 30 in (76 cm) deep chair plus a small table plus a 24 in (61 cm) route past. Below 4 ft (1.2 m) a balcony becomes standing space only, and below 2 ft (61 cm) it is a French balcony, which is a guard rather than a floor. For a table with chairs on two sides, allow 8 ft (2.4 m).

How high should a pergola be?

Eight feet (2.44 m) clear under the beams is the practical minimum, and 9 to 10 ft (2.7 to 3.0 m) suits a structure over a dining table because a pergola lower than the room it shelters feels like a lid. Rafters at 12 to 24 in (30 to 61 cm) centres give roughly 30 to 50 per cent shade at midday, depending on rafter depth.

What size pad does a hot tub need?

A 7 x 7 ft (2.13 x 2.13 m) tub wants a pad at least 8 x 8 ft (2.4 x 2.4 m), usually 4 in (100 mm) of reinforced concrete, because a filled tub with people in it weighs 5,000 to 6,000 lb (2,300 to 2,700 kg). Leave 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) around three sides and 36 in (91 cm) at the equipment panel.
