Short answer
Set sockets at 450 mm (18 in) to centre and switches at 1,050 mm (41 in), and you land inside both the UK Approved Document M band of 450 to 1,200 mm (18 to 47 in) and the ADA reach range of 15 to 48 in (38 to 122 cm). US trade habit puts sockets at 12 in and switches at 48 in, which sits outside the UK band at both ends. Spacing then follows the wall: 12 ft (3.7 m) generally, 48 in (1.2 m) along a counter.

Services are set out before a room exists. The boxes go in against studs or into chased brickwork, weeks before the floor is laid and months before the worktop arrives, and they are almost always positioned by measuring up from whatever the electrician is standing on. That is why so many houses have sockets that are level with nothing and switches that miss the door by an inch. The order of decisions is: fix the datums, set the heights, then the spacings, then the exceptions for wet and hot locations, and last the working space in front of the things you have to open.
Two datums, and only one of them is the floor#
Every services height on a drawing is measured to the centre of the accessory plate, from the finished floor level. Two things follow.
The first is that a subfloor is not a datum. A 16 mm (5/8 in) engineered floor or a 22 mm (7/8 in) tiled build-up moves every accessory down relative to the finished room, so heights marked from bare joists come out that much low. The stack to allow for is in underlay and subfloor thickness.
The second is that in a kitchen the floor stops being the datum altogether. Sockets above a worktop are set from the worktop, normally 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in) above it, because they have to clear the upstand and sit below the wall cabinets. With a 900 mm (35.5 in) worktop that lands near 1,050 mm (41 in) from the floor, but the number that must be right is the one measured from the counter, using the heights in kitchen counter and cabinet heights.
The heights, and why the two countries disagree#

The US figures are trade convention rather than code: the NEC sets no general minimum height for a dwelling receptacle, only a 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) ceiling above which an outlet stops counting towards the required spacing. The UK figures are a regulation, because Approved Document M requires switches and socket outlets in new dwellings to sit between 450 and 1,200 mm. Spacing along a wall, and along a counter#
Height decides whether an accessory is usable; spacing decides whether there are enough of them. The NEC rule for a dwelling is that no point along the floor line of a wall may be more than 6 ft (1.8 m) from a receptacle, which puts outlets at most 12 ft (3.7 m) apart, and any wall section 24 in (610 mm) or wider counts, including the short return beside a door.
Counters run to a tighter rule: no point more than 24 in (610 mm) from a receptacle, so outlets at most 48 in (1.2 m) apart, and any counter 12 in (305 mm) wide or more needs at least one. Islands and peninsulas have their own provisions, and the practical layout question is where the outlets go now that face-mounted island sockets are restricted. The exceptions: wet, hot and behind a screen#
Three situations override the general heights.
Bathrooms are zoned rather than dimensioned in the UK, with general sockets kept 3 m (9 ft 10 in) from the zone 1 boundary and only a shaver supply permitted closer. US rules go the other way, requiring a GFCI receptacle within 36 in (91 cm) of each basin. Both are in bathroom electrical zones and clearances.
Heat sources bias anything that senses temperature, which is the whole reason thermostat and control heights is a dimensional question rather than a preference, and radiators and registers impose their own clearances above, below and in front, including the awkward interaction with curtains and furniture set out in radiator, vent and register clearances.
A wall-mounted screen is the third. A flush bracket leaves under 25 mm (1 in) behind the panel, so a standard box and a right-angle plug will not fit and the outlet has to be recessed. Heights, box depths and conduit sizes are in TV outlet, cable and conduit heights, and the stud positions that constrain all of it in TV wall mount dimensions.
Working space, which is the part that is genuinely code#
Heights are convention in most places. Working space in front of a distribution board is not. The NEC requires 36 in (914 mm) of clear depth, 30 in (762 mm) of width and 6 ft 6 in (1,981 mm) of headroom in front of a panel, kept permanently clear, and it caps the highest breaker handle at 6 ft 7 in (2.0 m) above the floor. UK practice puts a consumer unit at 1,350 to 1,450 mm (53 to 57 in) to the switch centres for the same reason: it must be reachable in the dark by whoever lives there. How high should sockets be from the floor?
Four hundred and fifty millimetres (18 in) to centre is the height that works in both systems, and it is the minimum Approved Document M sets for new UK dwellings. US practice is lower, typically 12 in (30 cm) to the bottom of the box, which puts the centre near 355 mm and outside the UK band. Above a worktop the figure is different again, usually 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in) above the surface.
What height are light switches?
Around 1,050 mm (41 in) to centre suits both standards. The traditional UK height of 1,350 mm (53 in) is above the ADA 48 in limit, and the US trade height of 48 in (1,219 mm) is 19 mm above the 1,200 mm ceiling in Approved Document M. Anything between 900 and 1,200 mm satisfies both, so 1,050 mm is the safe middle.
How far apart do kitchen sockets need to be?
Along a US kitchen counter, no point may be more than 24 in (61 cm) from a receptacle, which means outlets at most 48 in (1.2 m) apart, and any counter section 12 in (30 cm) wide or more needs one. UK practice is not prescriptive by distance but by circuit and appliance count, so kitchens there are laid out by what plugs in rather than by a spacing rule.
How much space is needed in front of an electrical panel?
Thirty-six inches (914 mm) of clear depth, 30 in (762 mm) of width and 6 ft 6 in (1,981 mm) of headroom, kept clear at all times. That space cannot be a cupboard shelf, a coat rail or a bin store. The highest breaker handle may not be more than 6 ft 7 in (2.0 m) above the floor, which caps how high the enclosure can be mounted.
Can you put a socket in a bathroom?
In the UK, only a shaver socket to BS EN 61558-2-5 inside the zoned area, with general sockets at least 3 m (9 ft 10 in) horizontally from the zone 1 boundary. In the US, at least one GFCI receptacle is required within 36 in (91 cm) of the outside edge of each basin, and none may be inside a shower or tub space. The two systems reach opposite conclusions.
How high should a TV outlet be?
Behind the screen, which usually means a recessed box centred 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in) below the screen centre so the plug clears the bracket. Screen centre itself is normally 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm) for seated viewing. Use a recessed box: a standard box plus a right-angle plug still projects 30 to 40 mm, and a flush bracket has less than 25 mm behind it.
What height should a thermostat be?
Fifty-two to 60 in (132 to 152 cm) is the conventional height, but the accessible maximum is 48 in (122 cm) and the accessible figure is the better one. Keep it off exterior walls, at least 450 mm (18 in) from a doorway and well away from lamps, radiators and direct sun, all of which bias the sensor and make the whole heating system run wrong.
Do socket heights have to match across a house?
They do not have to, but a single datum saves a great deal. Set one height for general rooms, one for above worktops and one for switches, write them on the plan, and mark boxes from a laser line rather than measuring each one off the floor. A floor that is 15 mm out of level across a room will otherwise show as a visibly stepped run of sockets.
