Short answer

The minimum hallway width in a dwelling is 36 in (91 cm) under IRC R311.6. It works, but it reads as a corridor. 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm) is where a hallway starts to feel deliberate: two people pass, a console or a run of shallow storage fits, and the proportion against an 8 to 9 ft (2.4 to 2.7 m) ceiling stops feeling tall and thin.

36 in (91 cm) is a floor, not a target. It comes from IRC R311.6 and it is enough to walk through, but a hallway at the minimum has no capacity for anything else: no console, no coat hooks with coats on them, no shoe rack, no wheeled suitcase parked while you find your keys.

The interesting jump is 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm). That six inches costs one wall moving half a stud bay and it changes the hall from a passage to a place two people can occupy at once. If a renovation gives you one dimensional favour, spend it here rather than on a bedroom that is already big enough.

Measure to the finish, not the frame#

The 36 in code minimum is measured to the finished wall surface, but the number you actually walk through is smaller again once real objects appear:

  • Skirting: 0.5 to 1 in (1.5 to 2.5 cm) per side
  • Door architrave at every opening: 0.75 in (2 cm), and always at the pinch point
  • A panel radiator: 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm)
  • Coat hooks with coats on them: 6 to 9 in (15 to 23 cm)
  • A stair newel post at the head of the hall: 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm)

A nominally 36 in hall with skirting, one radiator and a coat rail walks at about 27 in (69 cm). That is a squeeze width, not a primary route width, and the fix is either to lose the radiator or to accept it. Putting storage in a hall#

Shallow storage is the highest-value square footage in a house because it occupies a zone nobody sits in. The arithmetic is simple:

If you cannot give the storage its own depth, take it from a room instead. Stealing 14 in (36 cm) off the end of a bedroom to make a recessed hall cupboard costs the bedroom almost nothing and gives the hall everything. Depths for the objects being stored are in storage dimensions.

Doors, and the offset that fixes them#

Every door on a hallway does two things: it removes wall (so the storage above cannot run continuously) and it either takes the hall's width while open or takes the room's floor.

Default to swinging into the room. Where a door must open into the hall, offset opposing doors by at least 12 in (30 cm) so the two arcs never meet, and never place a door so its latch side is tight into a corner: pulling it open needs about 18 in (46 cm) of clear wall beside the latch, as set out in door sizes, swings and the space they need.

A door at the end of a hall is worth more than a door along it. It gives the corridor a terminus, which is the cheapest way to stop a long hall reading as a tunnel.

Proportion: width against height, and width against length#

A hallway is the narrowest space in a house and usually has the same ceiling height as the widest. That ratio is what makes a hall feel like a shaft.

Length matters through interruption rather than absolute number. A 30 ft (9 m) hall with a window at the end, a widening at the stair and a change of floor material at a threshold reads as a sequence. A 16 ft (5 m) hall with four identical flush doors and one ceiling light reads as a corridor in a hotel. If the hall is long, break it: widen it by 12 in (30 cm) at the point where it passes the stair, or drop the ceiling over a short section to make a threshold. Lighting a hallway#

A single central fitting in a long hall produces one bright zone and two dim ends, which exaggerates length. Space sources at intervals instead: as trade practice, one modest source every 6 to 8 ft (1.8 to 2.4 m) of hall, aimed at the walls rather than the floor, because the walls are what you see in a corridor. Wall washing also makes a 36 in hall read wider, since the perceived width of a space is driven by the brightness of its vertical surfaces. Halls are also the one place a low light level is genuinely useful at night. A separate low-level circuit at 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm) above the floor solves the stair landing problem without waking anyone.

How to decide yours#

  1. Measure the existing hall at its narrowest point, to the finish, with the radiator and skirting included.
  2. Decide what the hall must carry: circulation only, circulation plus coats, or circulation plus storage plus a place to sit and pull boots on.
  3. Add 36 in (91 cm) of clear route to the depth of whatever it must carry. That is your target width.
  4. Check the target against 40 percent of your ceiling height and take the larger number.
  5. Walk the route with the widest object you own. If the answer is a stair turn or a right-angle corner, use the depth-versus-length arithmetic above before you decide the hall is wide enough.

What is the minimum hallway width?

How wide should a hallway be to feel comfortable?

Can I put furniture in a 36 inch hallway?

Only if you accept dropping to a squeeze. A 12 in (30 cm) console in a 36 in (91 cm) hall leaves 24 in (61 cm), which is passable but not comfortable for a route you use every day. To keep a full 36 in walking width past 12 to 16 in (30 to 41 cm) of storage, the hall needs to be 48 to 52 in (122 to 132 cm) wide.

How wide does a hallway need to be for a wheelchair?

36 in (91 cm) sustained, per ADA 2010 section 403.5.1. Where the route makes a 180 degree turn around an obstruction less than 48 in (122 cm) wide, the approach legs need 42 in (107 cm) and the turn itself 48 in (122 cm). Practically, plan a 36 in hall with 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm) at junctions.

Should doors open into a hallway or into the room?

Into the room, wherever the room can take the arc. A door swinging into a 36 in (91 cm) hall reduces the usable width to a few inches while open, and in a hall serving several bedrooms that produces a genuine bottleneck. Doors that must open outward should be offset from each other by at least 12 in (30 cm) so their arcs do not meet.

How long can a hallway be before it feels oppressive?

Length is not the problem, unbroken length is. A hall over about 20 ft (6 m) with nothing to stop the eye reads as a tunnel. Break it with a change of ceiling plane, a door or window at the far end, a widening at a junction, or lighting placed at intervals rather than as one continuous line.
