Every dimension of a raised bed is set by an arm, a root or a wheelbarrow, and usually in that order.

Short answer
Make a raised bed 48 in (122 cm) wide where you can walk both sides and 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) where you cannot, because comfortable forward reach over a low wall is about 24 in (61 cm) and you need to reach the centre without standing in the soil. Depth follows the crop: 6 in (15 cm) for salad, 12 in (30 cm) for roots, 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) over paving. Wider than 48 in and the middle goes unweeded.

A raised bed has four dimensions and only one of them is about plants. The width comes from an arm, the path comes from a wheelbarrow, the length comes from the timber merchant, and the depth is the only figure a root has any say in. Get the first three wrong and the bed works badly forever, because they are fixed in concrete or in screws on day one.
Where the 48 in width comes from#
Comfortable forward reach over a low obstacle, standing and leaning, is about 24 in (61 cm) for an adult. That is not the maximum: a determined stretch gets to 30 in (76 cm) or more, and the ADA puts unobstructed maximum forward reach at 48 in (1,220 mm) high measured vertically, not horizontally. It is the distance you can work at repeatedly, with two hands, for twenty minutes, without putting a knee on the wall. Two of those reaches meeting in the middle give 48 in (122 cm), and that is the whole derivation of the standard bed width. It is also why the 4 x 8 ft bed is everywhere: 4 ft is the arithmetic and 8 ft is the length a board comes in.
The reach is measured to the inside face of the wall, not to the outside of the frame. A bed built from 2 in nominal boards, which are 1.5 in (38 mm) thick, has an internal width of 45 in (114 cm) if the boards are 48 in apart on the outside. That is fine, because the soil is what you are reaching across. But it matters when you cut the boards: a bed with 48 in internal soil width and 1.5 in walls has an external dimension of 51 in (130 cm), and that is the figure the paths have to work around.
Reaching from one side only, the answer is 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm). Take the lower figure against a solid fence you cannot lean over, and the upper figure where you can put a foot forward against a low wall.
Depth: 6 in for salad, 24 in over paving#
There are two completely different questions here and mixing them is the common error. If the bed sits on soil that has been forked over, the frame is a retaining wall for extra depth and the roots continue into the ground below, so 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) of added soil is generous for almost anything. If the bed sits on concrete, a membrane, a roof or a deck, the frame is the entire root zone and the depth has to hold the full rooting depth of the crop.

Depth is measured from the soil surface down, not from the top of the wall. A bed with 12 in (30 cm) high sides filled to 2 in (50 mm) below the rim has 10 in (25 cm) of soil, and if it settles another inch in the first year it has 9 in (23 cm). Build 14 in (36 cm) of wall if you want 12 in of soil after settlement, and fill proud.
The 32 cubic feet, and the tonne it weighs#
Volume is simple arithmetic and worth doing before ordering. A 4 x 8 ft bed filled to 12 in (30 cm) is 4 x 8 x 1 = 32 cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so that is 1.19 cubic yards, or 0.91 cubic metres, or about 907 litres. Bulk bags sold as "one tonne" typically hold 0.7 to 0.8 cubic metres, so the bed takes rather more than one bag.
Weight is where it stops being simple. A moist topsoil and compost blend runs 1,000 to 1,300 kg per cubic metre (1,700 to 2,200 lb per cubic yard). The same bed therefore holds roughly 900 to 1,180 kg (2,000 to 2,600 lb) of wet soil sitting on 32 square feet (2.97 m2), which is 62 to 82 lb per square foot (3.0 to 3.9 kPa).
Set that against the code. The IRC live load table asks for 40 lb per square foot (1.9 kPa) on habitable floors and on decks, and 60 lb per square foot (2.9 kPa) on exterior balconies. A 12 in deep bed of wet soil exceeds both. It is a dead load rather than a live one, which is a different check, but the conclusion holds: a 12 in deep raised bed is not a piece of garden furniture on a deck, it is a structural addition. Halve the depth to 6 in (15 cm) and you are at 31 to 41 lb per square foot, which is in the same territory as furniture and people. The 36 in figure is not arbitrary. A builder's barrow measures 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) across the handles, and it is steered by a person walking behind it whose feet track wider than the wheel. Give the barrow 5 in (13 cm) each side and you get 36 in (91 cm), which happens to be the same number the IRC uses for a minimum hallway indoors and the same one that keeps recurring in walkway and circulation widths. It is a body plus a load, and the body is the same body indoors and out.
One path in a plot should be 48 in (122 cm). It is the one that takes a barrow past a kneeling person, and it is also the width that makes the whole plot usable from a wheelchair. Surfacing, falls and step dimensions for those paths are in garden path widths and outdoor step dimensions.
Container sizes: a tomato wants 8 gallons#
A pot is a bed with a very small footprint, and the same depth logic applies with none of the forgiveness, because a container has no soil below it and dries from five sides at once.

The volume column is worth checking with a calculation rather than trusting a label, because pot volume grows very fast with diameter. A cylinder 14 in (36 cm) across and 12 in (30 cm) deep contains pi x 7 x 7 x 12 = 1,847 cubic inches. At 231 cubic inches per US gallon that is exactly 8 US gallons, or 30 litres. Drop the diameter to 10 in (25 cm) and the same depth gives 942 cubic inches, 4 US gallons, 15 litres: a 29 per cent reduction in width has halved the soil. That relationship, and the fact that water loss scales with surface area rather than volume, is why small pots need daily watering in July and large ones do not. Why the 4 x 8 ft bed exists: board lengths#
Timber dictates more bed dimensions than plants do. Nominal 2 x 10 softwood actually measures 1.5 x 9.25 in (38 x 235 mm), so one course gives 9.25 in of wall and two courses give 18.5 in (470 mm). Nominal 2 x 6 measures 1.5 x 5.5 in (38 x 140 mm), so two courses give 11 in (279 mm) and three give 16.5 in (419 mm). Railway-style sleepers are 100 x 200 mm (4 x 8 in) and stack to 200, 400 or 600 mm (8, 16 or 24 in).
Boards come in 8, 10, 12 and 16 ft lengths (2.4, 3.0, 3.7 and 4.9 m). A 4 x 8 ft bed built from 8 ft boards uses three boards per course with one cut in half, and produces no offcut at all. A 4 x 10 ft bed uses the same three boards and leaves two 4 ft ends. That difference in waste, not any horticultural consideration, is why the 4 x 8 bed became the standard, in the same way that stock sheet sizes drive cabinet dimensions everywhere in the outdoor dimensions section and beyond.
Wall pressure grows with the square of depth, so a 20 in (51 cm) deep bed pushes roughly two and a half times as hard on its boards as a 12 in (30 cm) one. Any bed over 16 in (41 cm) deep and longer than 6 ft (1.8 m) wants a cross tie or a buried stake at mid span, or it will bow visibly by the second summer. A 4 x 8 ft bed filled to 12 in (30 cm) holds 32 cubic feet, which is 1.19 cubic yards or 0.91 cubic metres, about 907 litres. Order 1.25 cubic yards to allow for settlement, and fill 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) proud of the final level because a fresh compost mix settles roughly 10 per cent in the first season.
How much space do you need between raised beds?
Twenty-four inches (61 cm) is the working minimum: enough to stand and kneel. Thirty-six inches (91 cm) takes a wheelbarrow, since a builder's barrow is 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) across the handles. Forty-eight inches (122 cm) lets two people pass or a wheelchair turn, and it is the width to use on at least one main run through a plot.
How tall should a raised bed be for someone who cannot bend?
A top at 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) suits standing work, and 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm) suits a seated user, with 27 in (69 cm) of clear knee space underneath if the bed is to be approached head on. The catch is width: a tall bed blocks your torso from leaning, so cut the reach to about 20 to 22 in (51 to 56 cm) per side.
What size pot does a tomato need?
At least 12 in (30 cm) across and 12 in (30 cm) deep, which is about 5 US gallons or 19 litres, and 14 in (36 cm) across is better. A cylinder 14 in in diameter and 12 in deep holds 1,847 cubic inches, exactly 8 US gallons or 30 litres. Below 5 gallons the pot dries out faster than most people water.
How long should a raised bed be?
Eight to 12 ft (2.4 to 3.7 m). The upper end is set by patience rather than by structure: a bed 16 ft (4.9 m) long means a 16 ft detour every time you want something on the far side, and people stop walking round and start stepping over, which compacts the soil at exactly the point they step.
What thickness of timber do you need for a raised bed?
Nominal 2 in boards, which measure 1.5 in (38 mm), are the practical minimum and they will bow over a 8 ft (2.4 m) run at 12 in (30 cm) of fill unless you add a cross tie at mid span. Two-inch (50 mm) stock or 100 x 200 mm sleepers hold a straight line. Soil at 12 in depth pushes roughly 30 lb per foot (45 kg per metre) against the base of the wall.
