How wide should a reach-in closet door be?

A closet is only as wide as the gap its door leaves open, and most doors leave far less than their size.

Short answer

Wide enough that no more than 18 in (46 cm) of the closet sits past either edge of the clear opening, so the clear opening must be at least the inside width less 36 in (91 cm). Count the clear opening, not the door size: a bifold clears about 70 per cent, a bypass pair under half at a time, a hinged leaf nearly all. A 96 in closet needs a 96 in bifold or a 72 in hinged pair.

A reach-in closet door should leave a clear opening no more than 36 in (91 cm) narrower than the closet, so that neither end of the rod or shelf sits more than 18 in (46 cm) past the edge of the gap you reach through. A door's size is not the opening it clears, and a closet wider than its opening loses its ends. This page takes the clear opening for each door type from the hardware makers' drawings, and the 18 in from arm length. Depth, rod heights and walk-ins are in closet and wardrobe dimensions.

Three widths that are not the same: inside, finished opening, clear opening#

Inside width is the back wall, side wall to side wall. Closet Factory's measuring guide takes it there and gives typical depth as "around 24 in" (61 cm).

Finished opening is the hole in the front wall, jamb face to jamb face after plasterboard and trim. Between it and the side walls are the returns, which Closet Factory calls the "wing walls" at the front of the closet and measures one at a time, because "it is common that the return walls will not be the same".

Clear opening is the gap left with the door fully open. For a hinged door the ADA standards define it in 404.2.3: measured "between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees". For a bifold it is the opening less the folded stack; for a bypass pair, the opening less one door.

Only the clear opening decides what you can reach. Take all three with the tape as the site's measuring method describes, from finished faces.

Where 18 in comes from: a 22.7 in arm and a rod 12 in back#

Stand at the edge of the clear opening, shoulder at the door line, and reach sideways behind the return. The hand has to reach the rod and the shelf front, both about 12 in (30 cm) back from the door line in a 24 in (61 cm) closet, because the rod is centred 12 in off the back wall, as the storage and shelving hub sets out.

The reach is shoulder to grip centre. ANSUR II, the 2012 US Army anthropometric survey, publishes both halves: acromion-radiale length (shoulder to elbow) and forearm-centre of grip length. Added for each of the 6,068 people measured:

Shoulder to grip centre, ANSUR II5th percentile50th percentile95th percentile
Women (1,986)22.7 in (577 mm)24.7 in (627 mm)26.9 in (684 mm)
Men (4,082)24.8 in (631 mm)26.9 in (684 mm)29.1 in (740 mm)

Design for the short arm. With a 22.7 in reach and the rod 12 in back, the hand travels sideways past the jamb by:

square root of (22.7 x 22.7 less 12 x 12) = square root of (515 less 144) = 19.3 in (49 cm)

The median woman reaches 21.6 in (55 cm) and the median man 23.9 in (61 cm). Rounding 19.3 in down to 18 in (46 cm) leaves an inch for a shoulder that cannot quite reach the door line past the trim. That is the site's working limit, so for an opening centred on the back wall, clear opening at least inside width less 36 in (91 cm).

From the jamb, a 22.7 in arm crosses the rod line 19.3 in to the side, so a 12 in return is inside reach and an 18 in one is the limit.

Clear opening by door type: bypass 49 per cent, bifold 70, hinged nearly all#

Bypass doors hang on two tracks and overlap where they meet. Johnson Hardware's 2200F instruction sheet sizes a two-door set as "2 x door width -1 in": a 72 in (183 cm) opening takes two 36 1/2 in doors. Slide one over the other and the gap is the opening less one door, 35 1/2 in (90 cm). Hager's bypass instructions ask for "at least 1/2 in (13 mm) preferably 1 in (25 mm) overlap" and give the example of two 24 in panels in a 48 in opening, trimmed in to 47 in, which leaves 23 in clear. Four-door sets are "4 x door width -2 in": 96 in takes four 24 1/2 in doors, and with the inner pair slid out over the outer pair the middle opens 47 in (119 cm).

Bifold doors fold into a stack that stays in the opening. Johnson's opening-clearance drawing for its 100FD hardware shows a pair of 12 in panels in a 24.562 in opening folding into "7-1/4 in (184 mm) APPX. (30% OF DOOR OPENING)". A four-panel bifold is two such pairs, one at each jamb, so it loses about 30 per cent of its whole opening and clears about 70 per cent.

Hinged doors give the opening less the open leaf's thickness, which stands in the doorway, and less the stop on the latch side. The rows below take a 1 3/8 in (35 mm) leaf, the thickness of Masonite's bifold panels and one of the two Johnson's 2200 bypass hardware takes.

Bifold panel widths are Johnson's 100FD sets. The 30 per cent is Johnson's figure, drawn for 12 in panels; the 24 and 48 in rows come straight off the drawing, the others apply the same share. A folded pair stands roughly square to the opening, so it projects about one panel width. Johnson also sells a 1601 hinge set under the name "Full Access", for panels up to 24 in wide, built to swing the folded pair further out of the way; it publishes no clear-opening figure for it, so none is claimed here.

Apply the 18 in limit to the clear openings above, with the door centred on a 24 in deep closet. "Past each edge" is the inside width less the clear opening, halved.

Bypass doors are left out: the far half is behind a door, not a wall, and sliding brings it into the opening. What they fail is seeing the whole closet at once: a 72 in bypass pair shows 35 1/2 in at a time, and the last 18 1/2 in (47 cm) behind the closed door is out of reach until the doors are swapped. Fine for a rail of shirts, a nuisance for shoes and boxes. Shoe shelves and their depths are in shoe storage dimensions.

A bifold stack is a return you paid for#

Standard sizes: 24 to 36 in single bifolds, 48 to 96 in sets#

Masonite lists standard finished openings for its 1 3/8 in (35 mm) bifolds of 18, 24, 28, 30, 32 and 36 in wide by 80 3/4 in (2.05 m) for 79 in panels, with double units "for openings up to 72 in". The finished opening allows 1/4 in (6.4 mm) at each side and 1/8 in (3.2 mm) at the top.

Johnson's 100FD sets run 36 in (two 18 in panels) and 48, 60, 72 and 96 in (four panels of 12, 15, 18 and 24 in). Its bypass sets come in two, three or four doors, and Hager's covers openings "up to 8 ft (244 cm) wide". Converting any of these for a metric wardrobe system is a job for the unit converter.

Floor in front: none for bypass, one panel for a bifold, one leaf when hinged#

The door that clears the most opening needs the most floor. A hinged leaf sweeps a quarter circle of its own width: 30 in (76 cm) of floor in front of a 30 in leaf, 36 in in front of each leaf of a 72 in pair. A bifold projects about one panel: 12 in (30 cm) for a 48 in four-panel, 18 in for 72 in, 24 in for 96 in. A bypass pair projects nothing.

Then add the person: bedroom clearances allows about 24 in (61 cm) of standing room beyond the door, so a 36 in (91 cm) hallway outside a closet takes a bypass pair or a 12 in panel bifold and nothing else. Hinged leaf sizes and their rough openings are in doorway sizes, and the same trade-off on a coat closet is in coat closet dimensions.

What shifts the 18 in: deeper closets, children and wheelchair users#

Deeper closets. The rod moves back with the wall. In a 30 in (76 cm) deep closet the rod is 18 in from the door line, and the same 22.7 in arm gets square root of (515 less 324) = 13.8 in past the jamb: work to 12 in (30 cm) per side, so the clear opening must be the inside width less 24 in. Depth beyond 24 in costs width at the door.

Shallower closets. At 22 in (56 cm) the rod is about 11 in back and the reach rises to 19.7 in, so the 18 in holds.

Children. ANSUR II measures adults only, and a child's shorter arm shrinks every number here, so a child's closet wants no returns. Heights by age are in kids' closet and storage heights, and a closet split between two children in shared kids' room layouts.

Wheelchair users. The 18 in assumes someone standing who can put a shoulder to the door line, which a seated user cannot. ADA 305.3 gives a 30 x 48 in (760 x 1220 mm) clear floor space and 308.3.1 a side reach of 15 to 48 in (380 to 1220 mm) above the floor, over an obstruction no deeper than 10 in (255 mm). An accessible reach-in wants no returns, the rod at 48 in at most and the opening the full inside width. The rest is in accessible clearances.

Where the dead ends go when the door cannot change#

A closet with long returns and a fixed opening still has usable ends, just not for hanging. Use them for what can be retrieved without seeing it: stacked bins, out-of-season boxes, fixed shelves sized as in shelf depth and spacing. The span of rod across a wide closet, which a centre support usually has to interrupt, is in closet rod span and capacity. The wardrobe and closet planner lays out rail and shelf sections by width, the terms are in the glossary and the codes under standards and codes.

Frequently asked questions#

How wide should a closet door be for a 6 foot closet?

A 72 in (183 cm) opening, fitted with a four-panel bifold or a pair of 36 in hinged leaves, if the closet is 72 in wide inside. The bifold clears about 50 1/2 in (128 cm), leaving 10 3/4 in of closet past each edge, inside the 18 in a short-armed adult reaches. A single 48 in bifold centred on the same closet clears 33 1/2 in and leaves 19 1/4 in blind at each end.

Do bypass closet doors waste space?

They waste access, not floor. Two bypass doors overlap by 1 in (25 mm), so a 72 in opening takes two 36 1/2 in doors and shows 35 1/2 in (90 cm) at a time, 49 per cent. Everything is reachable, half at a time, by sliding. Bypass is the right door where the floor in front is too tight for a bifold panel or a hinged leaf to open.

How much opening does a bifold closet door lose?

About 30 per cent of the opening, the figure Johnson Hardware prints on its drawing of a folded pair: 7 1/4 in (184 mm) of a 24 in opening for two 12 in panels. A four-panel bifold has a folded pair at each jamb, so a 48 in opening clears about 33 1/2 in (85 cm) and a 72 in opening about 50 1/2 in (128 cm).

What is a return wall in a closet?

The short length of wall at the front of a reach-in closet between the side wall and the door opening, the wing wall on each side. Closet Factory's measuring guide records each one separately because they are often unequal. Anything stored behind a return has to be reached around the jamb, which is why returns over 18 in (46 cm) in a 24 in deep closet become dead storage.

Can you put a bifold door on a 24 inch closet?

You can, but it clears only about 17 1/4 in (44 cm), from Johnson Hardware's drawing of a 24 in pair with 12 in panels. That is no wider than a 17 to 18 in hanger, so garments come out at an angle. A 24 in hinged leaf clears under 22 5/8 in (57 cm) and is the better door unless the floor in front cannot take a 24 in swing.

How much floor space does a closet door need in front?

None for a bypass pair, about one panel width for a bifold (12 in for a 48 in four-panel, 18 in for a 72 in one, 24 in for 96 in) and the full leaf width for a hinged door, which sweeps a quarter circle. Add standing room on top: the person reaching in needs about 24 in of floor clear of the door.

Does a closet door need a 32 inch clear width?

Only where the ADA applies and the door is one a person passes through. ADA 404.2.3's 32 in (815 mm) clear width, measured from the face of the open door to the stop, is written for doorways on an accessible route. A reach-in closet is storage you reach into, and ADA 811.3 asks instead that storage sit within the 308 reach ranges, 15 to 48 in (380 to 1220 mm) above the floor.
