Short answer
A 5 x 7 ft (60 x 84 in) full bathroom holds a 60 in tub, a 24 in vanity and a toilet, but only at IRC minimum clearances, not at NKBA recommended ones. Going to 5 x 8 ft (60 x 96 in) buys the 18 in toilet centreline and the 30 in clear floor that make the room comfortable. A 3 x 6 ft (36 x 72 in) shower room misses the US code clearances by about 3 in (8 cm); at 36 x 78 in (91 x 198 cm) it works.

Solve the floor, not the fixtures#
Every fixture in a bathroom comes with two footprints: the object, and the clear floor you must stand on to use it. The object is small. The clear floor is not, and it is the thing that runs out.
The 3 x 6 ft shower room, and why it fails by three inches#
The arithmetic that decides this room runs along its length. A compliant shower cannot be less than 30 in (76 cm) in either direction, because it has to contain a 30 in circle. A wall-hung pan projects 21 in (53 cm). The clear floor in front of a shower opening is 24 in (61 cm) by code, and 21 in (53 cm) in front of a toilet, so the shared strip between them must be at least 24 in. That is 30 + 21 + 24 = 75 in (191 cm), against the 72 in (183 cm) a 3 x 6 ft room offers.
Three inches. Find them by borrowing from a cupboard, moving a stud wall, or accepting a two-fixture cloakroom. At 36 x 78 in (91 x 198 cm), drawn above, the strip becomes 27 in and the room works, with a 16 x 10 in (41 x 25 cm) compact basin tucked beside the outward-opening door. Note that the basin sits forward of the pan rather than beside it: at 36 in of width there is no room for a basin next to a toilet, because that would put an obstruction well inside the 15 in (38 cm) side clearance covered in bathroom fixture clearances.
The 5 x 7 ft full bath, drawn honestly#
The tub takes the 60 in (152 cm) end wall, which is the only place it goes. That leaves 60 x 54 in (152 x 137 cm) of room. The toilet sits on the entry wall beside the door, with its centreline 15 in (38 cm) from the corner and 15 in from the open door leaf, projecting 28 in (71 cm) and leaving 26 in (66 cm) of clear floor back to the tub. The vanity takes 24 in (61 cm) of the long wall, with 39 in (99 cm) of clear floor in front of it.
Every one of those numbers meets IRC and none of them meets NKBA. That is the true character of a 5 x 7 bathroom, and it is worth saying plainly because the room is sold as standard rather than as minimal.
Four changes, in order of value:
- Wall-hung pan. Projection drops from 28 to 21 in and the clear floor in front rises from 26 to 33 in. It is the highest-value change on this list.
- Swap the tub for a 60 x 32 in shower. Same footprint, but a curbless tray turns the shower floor into circulation, and the shower sizing rules all still pass.
- 18 in deep vanity. Returns 3 in to the aisle and lets the vanity grow to 30 in wide once the wall-hung pan has freed the corner.
- Outward or sliding door. Recovers 4.9 sq ft and removes the collision between the leaf and the toilet's side clearance.
5 x 8 ft: the first comfortable size#
Add 12 in (30 cm) of length and the room changes category. Put the tub across the 60 in end again and you have a 60 x 66 in (152 x 168 cm) space. On one long wall, run a 30 in (76 cm) vanity from the tub, then set the toilet centreline 18 in (46 cm) from the edge of the vanity, which leaves 18 in from the centreline to the entry wall. Both NKBA figures, satisfied on the same wall.
Clear floor across the room: 39 in (99 cm) in front of the vanity and 32 in (81 cm) in front of the pan, both above the recommended 30 in. The whole opposite wall stays free for the door and a towel radiator. Twelve inches of building is the difference between a bathroom that complies and one nobody complains about.
6 x 8 ft: a double vanity, just#
At 72 x 96 in (183 x 244 cm) a 60 in double vanity becomes possible, and the plan shows exactly what it costs: the clear floor in front of the toilet drops to 23 in (58 cm), because the vanity is directly opposite it. Code passes, NKBA does not. A wall-hung pan takes that gap to 30 in and settles it. This is the trade every 6 x 8 bathroom makes, and it is better made deliberately: two 30 in centres and a cramped toilet, or one wide basin, a storage tower and a comfortable room. The honest comfort width for two people is 72 in of vanity, which this room does not have; see vanity heights and sizes.
The under-stair half bath#
Here the constraint is vertical. IRC R305.1 allows a bathroom ceiling at 80 in (203 cm), measured at the centre of the clear floor space in front of the fixture, so the question is where under the stair that height occurs.
A stair at 7 in (178 mm) rise and 11 in (279 mm) run climbs 0.64 in for every inch of run, about 7.6 in per foot. The back of a close-coupled cistern needs roughly 32 in (81 cm) of height and an in-wall frame needs about 45 in (114 cm), so the pan can live under the low end. From 45 in of headroom up to 80 in is 35 in of climb, which takes 55 in (140 cm) of horizontal run. Add the pan and you need roughly 60 in (152 cm) of length under the stair with at least 30 in (76 cm) of width, door on the long side, opening out.
Put the basin under the lowest part only if it is a hand-rinse bowl: standing over a basin wants about 72 in (183 cm) of headroom.
The six moves that buy inches#

Two of those interact. A wall-hung pan needs a duct wall 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm) deep, so it gives back 6 to 8 in of floor and takes 8 in of wall. In a room where the pan sits on an internal partition you can bury the frame in a cupboard on the other side and win twice. Where it sits on an external wall you win nothing, and a floor-standing back-to-wall pan at 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) projection is the better compromise.
Moving the toilet, and what it really costs#
The soil pipe is the reason bathrooms stay where they are. Three constraints, in the order they bite:
- Fall. IRC P3005.3 sets the minimum slope for 3 to 6 in (76 to 152 mm) drainage pipe at 1/8 in per foot (1 percent), while 1/4 in per foot (2 percent) is what many specifications and local amendments require for a 3 in waste. Over 10 ft (3 m) of travel that is 1.25 to 2.5 in (32 to 64 mm) of drop, and it has to come from somewhere.
- Structure. A 3 in pipe is about 3.5 in (89 mm) outside diameter. IRC R502.8 limits bored holes to one third of the joist depth with 2 in (51 mm) kept clear top and bottom, which for a 2x10 at 9.25 in (235 mm) deep allows a hole of about 3 in (76 mm). A 3 in soil pipe needs a 3.5 in (89 mm) hole, so it cannot cross joists at all. It runs parallel between them, or below them in a dropped ceiling, or it does not move.
- Rough-in. The standard distance from the finished wall to the centre of the closet flange is 12 in (30 cm), with 10 in and 14 in pans made for awkward walls. Check which one you have before you order anything, because a 10 in rough-in with a 12 in pan leaves a 2 in gap at the wall.
Where none of that is available, a rear-outlet pan into a boxed horizontal branch, or a macerator on a 1.25 in (32 mm) discharge, are the remaining options. Both work. Both are noisier and less forgiving than gravity.

The HVI rule of thumb of 1 CFM per square foot only overtakes the 50 CFM code figure above 50 sq ft. Two things matter more than the headline figure: the duct, which should be 4 in (100 mm) for up to about 80 CFM and 6 in (150 mm) above that, rigid, short, insulated where it crosses cold space and terminated outside rather than in a loft; and the noise rating, because a fan above 1.5 sones is a fan people switch off. Leave a 3/4 in (19 mm) undercut on the door so the air has a way in.
The order to solve a small bathroom in#
- Fix the soil pipe. Everything else is cheaper to move.
- Draw the clear floor spaces as 30 x 48 in rectangles and deliberately overlap them into one central zone.
- Choose the door before the fixtures. Outward, sliding or pocket, and check the swing against the toilet's side clearance and the vanity drawer fronts.
- Place the shower or tub, which is the least flexible footprint, then the toilet, then the basin, which is the piece with the widest range of sizes.
- Re-measure from finished faces, adding tile, board and any duct wall, then check every clearance again. This step finds the 3 in that decide the room. Frequently asked questions#
What is the smallest a full bathroom can be?
About 5 x 7 ft (60 x 84 in, 1.5 x 2.1 m) for a tub, toilet and basin, and that fits only at IRC minimums: 15 in (38 cm) toilet centrelines and 21 in (53 cm) of clear floor in front of fixtures. A 5 x 8 ft (60 x 96 in) room is the first size where the NKBA recommended figures of 18 in and 30 in are all achievable at once.
Can you fit a bathroom into 3 x 6 ft?
Not with a shower under US clearances. The arithmetic is 30 in (76 cm) of shower plus 21 in (53 cm) of toilet projection plus the 24 in (61 cm) of clear floor a shower opening requires, which totals 75 in against the 72 in available. At 36 x 78 in (91 x 198 cm) it works. As a two-fixture cloakroom with no shower, 3 x 6 ft is comfortable.
How much space does a wall-hung toilet save?
6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) of floor depth. A close-coupled pan projects 27 to 30 in (69 to 76 cm) from the finished wall; a wall-hung pan on an in-wall frame projects 21 to 22 in (53 to 56 cm). In a room where the toilet faces the door, that is often the difference between 23 in and 30 in of clear floor in front of it.
How far can you move a toilet?
As far as the fall allows. A 3 in (76 mm) waste needs at least 1/8 in per foot of slope under IRC P3005.3, and 1/4 in per foot is common specification, so 10 ft (3 m) of travel costs 1.25 to 2.5 in (32 to 64 mm) of drop. The harder limit is structural: a 3 in pipe will not pass through a 2x10 joist within the boring rules, so it must run parallel between joists or below in a dropped ceiling.
What size extractor fan does a small bathroom need?
50 CFM (85 m3/h) intermittent or 20 CFM (34 m3/h) continuous is the code minimum under IRC M1507.4 and ASHRAE 62.2. The trade rule of thumb is 1 CFM per square foot of floor for rooms up to 100 sq ft, with a 50 CFM floor, so a 5 x 7 ft room at 35 sq ft still takes 50 CFM. Add 50 CFM for a separate enclosed shower.
Should a small bathroom door open in or out?
Out, or sideways, if the room is under about 40 sq ft (3.7 m2). A 30 in (76 cm) inward-swinging leaf sterilises a quarter circle of 4.9 sq ft (0.46 m2), which in a 5 x 7 ft room is 14 percent of the floor and almost always the piece in front of a fixture. Check first that the leaf does not then block a hallway or collide with an opposing door.
Is a pocket door worth it in a small bathroom?
Usually yes, with two conditions. The stud bay must be free of the soil stack, the basin vent, the switch drop and any wall-hung fixture bracket, because a pocket cassette leaves nothing to fix to. And the rough opening is roughly twice the door width plus 1 in (25 mm), so a 30 in door wants about 61 in (155 cm) of uninterrupted wall.
