Sizing and hanging pendants and chandeliers

Three numbers decide it: how wide, how tall, and how far down.

Short answer

Over a table, size the fixture at the table width minus 12 in (30 cm), and never let it come within 6 in (15 cm) of a long edge. In an open room the old rule is room width in feet plus room length in feet equals diameter in inches. Hang the bottom 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above a table or island on an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling, adding 3 in (7.6 cm) per additional foot of ceiling, and keep 84 in (213 cm) clear above anything you walk under.

Diameter over a table#

Fixture diameter = table width minus 12 in (30 cm). That leaves 6 in (15 cm) of clear air each side, which is the real constraint: 6 in is roughly what a seated person's head and shoulders sweep through leaning forward.

For round tables the maximum still applies, but the proportion that looks right is half to two-thirds of the table diameter. A 48 in (122 cm) round takes 24 to 32 in (61 to 81 cm); the minus-12 rule would allow 36 in (91 cm), which is clear and oppressive.

Table Width Maximum fixture Comfortable fixture
Rectangular, 6 seats 36 in (91 cm) 24 in (61 cm) 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm)
Rectangular, 6 to 8 seats 40 in (102 cm) 28 in (71 cm) 22 to 28 in (56 to 71 cm)
Rectangular, 8 to 10 seats 42 in (107 cm) 30 in (76 cm) 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm)
Round, 4 seats 42 in (107 cm) dia 30 in (76 cm) 21 to 28 in (53 to 71 cm)

A table over 84 in (213 cm) long wants a linear suspension or two matched pendants: one fixture sized to the width leaves both ends unlit. Table sizes by seat count are in dining table size by seats.

The room-size rule, and where it breaks#

For a fixture in the middle of an open room, the trade rule is:

Room width in feet + room length in feet = fixture diameter in inches.

A 12 x 14 ft (3.7 x 4.3 m) room gets a 26 in (66 cm) fixture. It works because the sum tracks the square root of the floor area closely enough across ordinary rooms, which also happen to have 8 to 9 ft ceilings. It has two failure modes.

The second failure is at the top of the scale. In a 24 x 30 ft (7.3 x 9.1 m) room the rule demands a 54 in (137 cm) fixture, which may exceed what a standard ceiling box supports and still reads as under-scaled under a 14 ft (4.3 m) ceiling. Above roughly 20 ft (6.1 m) in either dimension, use proportion instead: diameter around one fifth to one quarter of the shorter dimension, height driven by the ceiling.

Body height: 2.5 to 3 in per foot of ceiling#

Diameter is the number everybody checks. Height decides whether the fixture looks right, especially in a tall room.

Fixture body height = 2.5 to 3 in (6.4 to 7.6 cm) per foot of ceiling height.

Ceiling height Fixture body height Notes
8 ft (2.44 m) 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) Anything taller crowds the head
9 ft (2.74 m) 22 to 27 in (56 to 69 cm) The most forgiving ceiling
10 ft (3.05 m) 25 to 30 in (64 to 76 cm) Vertical presence starts to matter
12 ft (3.66 m) 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) Consider a two-tier fixture

Body height is the fixture itself. The drop is how far below the ceiling it starts, and the two add up.

Hanging height, and the 84 in floor#

Over a table or an island:

  • 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) from the surface to the bottom of the fixture, on an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling.
  • Add 3 in (7.6 cm) for each additional foot of ceiling: 33 to 39 in (84 to 99 cm) at 9 ft, 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm) at 10 ft.
  • Go low with a large opaque drum, to block the source from a seated eye at 40 to 42 in (102 to 107 cm). Go high with an open frame or exposed bulb, and with a table you need to see across.

Over anything you walk under, keep 84 in (213 cm) from finished floor to the lowest point of the fixture. That is the 7 ft the IRC sets as minimum ceiling height in habitable rooms. The ADA protruding-objects limit of 80 in (203 cm) is the absolute floor and is tight for a tall adult. Nobody walks on a tabletop, which is why 30 to 36 in above it can leave a fixture at 66 in (168 cm) off the floor. Dining-specific heights are in chandelier height over a dining table.

Multiple pendants over an island#

  • 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) between centres. Closer and the shades merge; wider and the island reads as two zones with a dark middle.
  • Outer pendants 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) inside the ends, not aligned to them.
  • Odd numbers. Two pendants leave a gap at the island centre, which is where the sink or prep area usually is.
  • 10 to 14 in (25 to 36 cm) diameter suits most residential islands.

Centre the pendants on the island in both directions, not on the room. With a 12 in (30 cm) seating overhang the pendant line still runs down the middle of the full island top, so light lands on the work surface rather than a seated person's knees. See kitchen island clearances.

Two-storey entries#

A tall entry void is judged from two places, and only one is inside the house. From the street at night, through the window above the door: centre the fixture in that opening, vertically as well as horizontally, which usually means hanging it higher than feels right from the hall. From the landing, it should read as a whole object rather than a bright disc seen edge-on.

The bottom should sit no lower than the second-floor line, typically 9 to 11 ft (2.7 to 3.4 m) above the entry floor, and never below 84 in (213 cm) over a walking route. Settle re-lamping access before you buy: a fixture 14 ft (4.3 m) up needs a winch, a long ladder with level footing, or a lamp life you can live with.

Chain, rod and canopy arithmetic#

Retailers quote a total drop range, but the number you order is the stem or chain length, which is not the same thing.

Chain or rod = ceiling height - clearance below the fixture - fixture body height - canopy height - medallion thickness

Chain shortens in whole links of 1 to 1.5 in (2.5 to 4 cm), so decide which way you round before it is hanging. And a medallion always lowers a fixture, never raises it.

Weight, boxes and sloped ceilings#

A ceiling outlet box listed for luminaire support must hold at least 50 lb (23 kg) under NEC 314.27(A)(2). Above that, the fixture must be supported independently of the box, usually on a threaded hanger fixed to blocking between joists, unless the box is listed for more. Ceiling fans need a box listed for fan support.

Typical weights: a 24 in (61 cm) metal chandelier with candle lamps runs 15 to 25 lb (7 to 11 kg); cast brass or glass arms reach 40 lb (18 kg); assume crystal at 30 in (76 cm) or more is over 50 lb until the specification says otherwise.

On a sloped ceiling use a canopy rated for the pitch, commonly to 45 degrees. The fixture hangs plumb while the ceiling does not, so measure headroom from the low side of the canopy and check that a wide shade will not meet the slope on the high side. Rigid-rod pendants usually need a specific sloped adapter; chain and cord do not. Above a table the drop is measured from the table, so a steep pitch changes only the rod length.

The order to solve it in#

  1. Fix the hanging height first. It is set by the table, the island or the walkway, and it does not negotiate.
  2. Set the body height from the ceiling, at 2.5 to 3 in per foot.
  3. Set the diameter from the table or the room, and check the 6 in (15 cm) edge clearance.
  4. Subtract everything to get the rod or chain length, including the canopy and any medallion.
  5. Check the weight against the box, before delivery rather than after.
  6. Check the lumens. A decorative fixture carries about 5 per cent of a room's light, per how to plan layered lighting; if this pendant is also the ambient source, size it on output too.

Run your dimensions through the pendant and chandelier size calculator, then check the result against scale and proportion rules before ordering.

Frequently asked questions#

What size chandelier for a dining table?

Table width minus 12 in (30 cm) is the maximum, so a 42 in (107 cm) wide table takes a fixture up to 30 in (76 cm) across. Round tables read better at half to two-thirds of the table diameter: a 48 in (122 cm) round takes 24 to 32 in (61 to 81 cm). The hard limit in both cases is 6 in (15 cm) of clear air between the fixture edge and the table edge, so nobody stands up into it.

How high should a chandelier hang above a table?

30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture on an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling, then add 3 in (7.6 cm) for every additional foot of ceiling height. On a 10 ft (3.05 m) ceiling that becomes 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm). Lower for a large opaque shade, higher for an open airy frame you need to see across.

What size light fixture for a room?

Add the room width in feet to the room length in feet and read the answer in inches. A 12 x 14 ft (3.7 x 4.3 m) room takes a 26 in (66 cm) fixture. The rule is only reliable in roughly square rooms with 8 to 9 ft ceilings; in long narrow rooms it oversizes badly, and the better move is to divide the room into square zones and hang one fixture in each.

How far apart should pendants be over an island?

24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) between centres, with the outer pendants set 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) inside the ends of the island. On an 84 in (213 cm) island, three pendants at 30 in centres with 12 in insets fits exactly. Use odd numbers: three reads as composed, two reads as a gap in the middle where you actually work.

How low should a two-storey entry chandelier hang?

The bottom should sit no lower than the second-floor line, and never lower than 84 in (213 cm) above any floor you walk on. If there is a window above the door, centre the fixture in that window as seen from the street at night, because that is the view the fixture was really bought for. Vertical proportion matters more than diameter in a tall void.

How much weight can a ceiling box hold?

A box listed for luminaire support must hold at least 50 lb (23 kg) under NEC 314.27(A)(2). Above that, the fixture must be supported independently of the outlet box, or the box must be specifically listed for the higher weight. Ceiling fans have their own rule and need a box listed for fan support. Chandeliers over 35 lb (16 kg) are worth checking a joist for regardless.

Can you hang a pendant on a sloped ceiling?

Yes, with a sloped-ceiling canopy or adapter rated for the pitch, commonly up to 45 degrees. The fixture hangs plumb while the ceiling does not, so measure the drop to the low side of the canopy for headroom, and check that the shade does not tilt into the slope. Fixed-rod pendants generally need a specific sloped kit; chain and cord suspensions handle it more easily.
