Coffee table dimensions: height, length, depth and shape

The top is easy to choose and almost always wrong, because it is chosen against the wrong line.

Short answer

Set a coffee table at 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) high, which is level with the sofa cushion once someone is sitting on it, and two thirds of the sofa length, so 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) for a standard 84 in (213 cm) sofa. Above 19 in (48 cm) the top catches the knee of anyone sliding forward. Below 14 in (36 cm) reaching a cup becomes a stoop from the hip.

A coffee table has only four numbers: height, length, depth and the gap in front of it. Three of them are set by the sofa and one is set by the human arm, which is why a table that looks correct in a showroom so often looks wrong at home. Nothing about the table changed. The sofa did.

The line the height is measured against#

Height is floor to the top surface of the table, including the thickness of the top and any tray or glass sitting on it. That much is uncontroversial. The comparison is where it goes wrong: a coffee table is not compared with the sofa's published seat height, it is compared with the height of the cushion with a person on it.

Manufacturers quote seat height unloaded, to the crown of an uncompressed cushion. A feather-wrapped or soft foam seat gives up 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) under an adult and firm high-density foam gives up around 1 in (2.5 cm), so a sofa advertised at 19 in (48 cm) sits between 16 and 18 in (41 and 46 cm) in use. The same catalogue number can describe two seats 3 in apart. The bands and the compression that goes with each filling are in seat height, depth and angle.

Measure it the honest way: sit on the sofa, have somebody lay a straightedge from the top of the compressed cushion out into the room, and measure floor to straightedge. Foam softens with age as well, losing another 1/2 to 1 in (13 to 25 mm) over five years of daily use, which argues for a table at the bottom of its band rather than the top.

The seat line continues straight out to the table top. The gap is measured from the cushion face, not the frame or the arm.

Why the band is 16 to 18 in#

Two body dimensions close the band from opposite ends.

The lower limit is the shoulder. Reaching to a surface more than about 3 in (8 cm) below the seat line means the trunk flexes forward from the hip instead of the arm swinging out from the elbow. With a seat at 17 in (43 cm) that puts the floor of the range at 14 in (36 cm), and anything lower behaves as a plinth for objects rather than a working surface.

The upper limit is the knee. Seated knee height, floor to the top of the kneecap, runs from about 19 in (48 cm) for a smaller adult to 23 in (58 cm) for a large one. A table at 20 in (51 cm) is already level with the knee of a good share of the people using it, and shifting forward to stand brings the shin into the edge. The difference between an 18 in table and a 21 in one is not three inches of style, it is the difference between clearing a knee and hitting it.

Where a room mixes a low sofa and a taller armchair, match the table to the lowest seat in the group. Someone on a higher chair can reach down without strain, but nobody can reach comfortably up and over.

Length: two thirds of what, exactly#

The two-thirds proportion is one of the few rules of thumb that survives scrutiny, and it is worth knowing what it is protecting. Take an 84 in (213 cm) sofa. Two thirds is 56 in (142 cm), and the stocked sizes either side are 54 in (137 cm) and 60 in (152 cm). Choose 54 in and the arithmetic gives (84 - 54) / 2 = 15 in (38 cm) of clear floor beyond each end of the table. Choose 60 in and it gives 12 in (30 cm). Choose 72 in, which is only "a bit bigger", and it gives 6 in (15 cm), which is less than the width of a shoe.

That end gap is the route into the middle of the sofa. Anyone who cannot walk in has to sidle past the table or climb over it, and 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) is the working minimum for a sideways step. The same proportional logic runs through the other pairings in scale and proportion rules that hold.

Sofa lengths themselves come in a short list of manufacturing sizes, set out in sofa dimensions, and coffee tables track the same 6 in (15 cm) module. That is why the choice is nearly always between two stocked lengths rather than a free number.

Depth, and the part of the top nobody reaches#

Depths run 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) for rectangles. The width of the top is not the width of the useful top.

Sitting upright against the back cushion, an adult hand reaches roughly 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) forward of the front edge of the seat, and the table starts 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) out. Upright, only the first 2 to 6 in (5 to 15 cm) of the top is in range. A forward lean from the hip adds 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm), so the working band is the first 12 to 16 in (30 to 41 cm) from the near edge. On an 18 in (46 cm) deep table nearly all the top is live; on a 24 in (61 cm) one, at least 8 in (20 cm) of the far side is served only from the opposite side or by walking round.

A round top gives back 21.5 per cent of the floor#

A round table of diameter d occupies pi x d squared / 4 of floor against d squared for a square of the same face dimension: 21.5 per cent less floor for the same apparent size, all of it saved off the corners, which are the parts at shin height on a walking route.

Round tops cap at 48 in (122 cm) for the same reason a round dining table caps at 72 in (183 cm): reach to the centre is half the diameter, and 24 in (61 cm) is already a full lean. Oval tables split the difference and are the right answer in a narrow room where a 54 in rectangle would leave under 30 in (76 cm) of walkway, the figure derived in walkway and circulation widths.

Sectionals, rugs and lift-tops move the figure#

A sectional. The chaise return projects 24 to 40 in (61 to 102 cm) further into the room than the sofa arm and needs the same 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) in front of its seat. Measure that gap first, then see what length is left. It decides most sectional tables, and the module sizes behind it are in sectional sofa dimensions.

A rug. A rug and pad add 1/2 to 3/4 in (13 to 19 mm) under the table, which is harmless until the rug stops short and the legs straddle its edge. Either the whole table sits on the rug or none of it does, one of the sizing rules in living room rug sizes and placement.

A small room. Below about 11 x 13 ft (3.4 x 4.0 m) the coffee table is usually the first piece to shrink or split in two, and small living room layouts shows what the remaining walkways do at each size.

A lift-top. The mechanism raises the top to 27 to 30 in (69 to 76 cm) and brings it 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm) toward the sitter. Against a 17 in (43 cm) seat that is a 10 to 13 in (25 to 33 cm) differential, which is the dining differential, and it is why lift-tops work for eating and ordinary tables do not.

Ottomans and benches. A padded ottoman used as a table needs a tray with a rim, and the tray raises the working surface about 1 in (25 mm). Sizes and seat heights for those are in bench and ottoman dimensions.

From the sofa, a leaning reach lands 12 to 16 in onto the top. Depth beyond that is served only from the far side.

The order: sofa, gap, length, depth, height, rug#

Each number constrains the next, and only the first is free. Fix the sofa and measure from the cushion face. Set the gap at 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) and mark it on the floor. Take two thirds of the seating length for the table length. Choose depth from whether anything sits opposite, 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) if not and 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) if so. Choose shape from the walkway rather than the room. Set height against the loaded cushion. Size the rug last, around all of it.

The sofa and seating fit checker runs the same sequence against a real room, and the geometry of the group as a whole, including the distance across to facing seats, is in living room seating layout.

Top thickness, overhang and the corner at shin height#

Check that the quoted height includes the top: a 3/4 in (18 mm) glass top on a frame built for a 1.5 in (38 mm) timber one sits noticeably lower. A top that projects 2 in (50 mm) beyond its frame on the sofa side lets a person tuck their toes under and recovers an inch or two of the gap, where a plinth base recovers nothing. Corners are a dimension too: a square corner at 18 in (46 cm) is at shin height for a child, so a 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) radius is the usual compromise and a round top removes the problem outright. The rest of the piece-by-piece sizes sit together in furniture dimensions, and the tables that flank the seating rather than face it are in side table and drink table dimensions.

Frequently asked questions#

How high should a coffee table be?

Sixteen to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) for a sofa with a seat at 17 to 18 in (43 to 46 cm). The rule is that the top should be level with the seat or up to 2 in (5 cm) below it, never above. Measure the seat with a person on it, because a soft cushion loses 1 to 3 in (2.5 to 8 cm) under load and the showroom figure is taken unloaded.

How long should a coffee table be compared to the sofa?

About two thirds of the sofa length, which puts a 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) table in front of a standard 84 in (213 cm) sofa. The proportion is not decorative. It leaves 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm) of clear floor beyond each end of the table, which is the room a person needs to step through to the middle seat.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Sixteen to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) from the cushion face, not from the arm or the frame. Below 14 in (36 cm) a seated adult cannot get their shins in without splaying, and standing up means shuffling sideways. Above 20 in (51 cm) the table leaves the reach envelope and people start putting drinks on the floor.

Is a round coffee table better than a rectangular one?

In a room under about 12 ft (3.7 m) across, usually yes. A round table of a given diameter occupies 21 per cent less floor than a square of the same face dimension, and it has no corner at shin height on the traffic side. Round tops cap at about 48 in (122 cm), because reaching the centre from the edge is then a 24 in (61 cm) lean.

What size coffee table for a sectional?

Measure from the longest continuous seating face, usually the sofa arm of the sectional rather than the chaise, and take two thirds of that. Then check the gap to the chaise separately: it needs the same 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm), and because a chaise seat projects 24 to 40 in (61 to 102 cm) further into the room, that second clearance is what usually forces a smaller or narrower table.

How deep should a coffee table be?

Eighteen to 24 in (46 to 61 cm). Depth beyond about 16 in (41 cm) is only useful if there is seating on the far side, because a seated adult can reach 12 to 16 in (30 to 41 cm) onto the top with a normal forward lean and no further. A deep table in front of a lone sofa is mostly storage for objects nobody moves.

Can a coffee table be taller than the sofa seat?

It can, and it is the most common sizing error. Once the top passes the seat line it enters the sightline across the room, it collects the knee of anyone shifting forward, and the sofa reads as if it has sunk. Seated knee height runs 19 to 23 in (48 to 58 cm), so a 20 in (51 cm) table is already at the knee of a shorter adult.

What height coffee table works with a deep lounge sofa?

Fourteen to 16 in (36 to 41 cm). Deep seated sofas are built with a lower, softer cushion, often 15 to 17 in (38 to 43 cm) loaded, and their seat depth of 24 in (61 cm) or more pushes the sitter back. Keep the standard 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) gap from the cushion face and drop the table to match the lower seat line.
