Short answer

A general bookcase is 11 to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) deep with shelves at a 12 in (30 cm) vertical pitch, which gives about 11.25 in (29 cm) of clear height per shelf and suits hardbacks up to 9.5 in (24 cm) tall. Depths under 9 in (23 cm) will not hold a hardback squarely. Heights over 72 in (183 cm) add shelves you cannot reach and cut the tipping margin below 10 degrees.

Four numbers describe a bookcase: depth, width, shelf pitch and height. Only one of them is chosen freely. Depth comes from the book, width comes from how far a board will span before it sags, pitch comes from the book again, and height is whatever whole number of pitches you can still reach. Everything else on the label is a finish.

Depth is measured to the inside face, and a 1x12 is 11.25 in#

Bookcase depth is quoted as the outside of the carcass, and the number that holds a book is the inside face of the back panel to the inside face of the front edge. On a case built from 3/4 in (18 mm) board with a 1/4 in (6 mm) back set into a rebate, a 12 in (30 cm) external depth gives about 11.5 in (29 cm) of clear shelf, and if the back panel is surface-mounted it gives 12 in. Both are fine for books. The trap is the face frame: add a 3/4 in front rail and the clear opening for putting a book in drops to 10.75 in (27 cm) even though the shelf behind it is still 11.5 in deep.

The recurring 11.25 in (286 mm) in ready-made bookcases has nothing to do with books. A nominal 1x12 softwood board measures 11.25 in after planing, and a 1220 mm (48 in) sheet cut into four strips with three saw kerfs of 3 mm yields strips of 302 mm (11.9 in). Two different supply chains land within 0.7 in of each other, and that coincidence is why almost every bookcase in the world is about a foot deep. Clear height is the book plus finger room. A 9.5 in (24 cm) hardback needs about 10 in (25 cm) of clear space, because you have to tilt the book to get it out and the tilt costs roughly half an inch. Pitch is that clear height plus the board: 10 in clear plus a 3/4 in shelf is a 10.75 in pitch, and the 12 in (30 cm) pitch that everyone quotes is a generous version of it that also swallows a stack of magazines laid flat. Depths and pitches for everything that is not a book are tabulated in shelf depth and vertical spacing by content.

The 32 mm hole pitch quantises every adjustment#

Adjustable shelves are less adjustable than they look. Almost all machine-drilled carcasses use System 32: a line of 5 mm holes at 32 mm (1.26 in) centres, because that is the pitch every European drilling machine is built to. A shelf can therefore only move in 1.26 in steps, and the pitches available are 288 mm (11.34 in), 320 mm (12.6 in), 352 mm (13.86 in) and so on.

Work that against a 1,800 mm (71 in) internal height. Six bays at 288 mm uses 1,728 mm and leaves 72 mm (2.8 in) stranded. Five bays at 320 mm uses 1,600 mm and leaves 200 mm (7.9 in). Neither divides cleanly, so the real choice is where to put the waste: one taller bay at the bottom for art books, or a strip of dead air at the top. A joiner drilling by hand can pick any pitch, which is one of the few genuine advantages of built-in cabinetry dimensions over a bought unit.

Width is decided by sag, not by the wall#

A shelf is a simply supported beam and its deflection rises with the fourth power of the span. The clear span in a bookcase is the width minus two sides: a 36 in (91 cm) carcass in 3/4 in board has a 34.5 in (88 cm) span. That is comfortable in solid hardwood, marginal in plywood, and hopeless in the melamine-faced chipboard most flat-pack units are made from, which reaches its visible sag limit at about 28 in (71 cm) with books on it.

This is why 30 and 36 in (76 and 91 cm) dominate the market: they are the widest a single bay can be in the two cheapest materials. Any wider unit on a shop floor has a vertical divider in it, and that divider is structure. Height stops where your reach stops#

Six tiers at 12 in (30 cm), a 3 in (76 mm) plinth and a top gives a 72 to 75 in (183 to 191 cm) unit, and that is not a coincidence either. The comfortable grasp limit for a standing adult of average height is around 72 in (183 cm); above it you are working blind, gripping the spine with fingertips, and pulling a 3 lb (1.4 kg) book down towards your face. Every tier above 72 in is storage you will fill once and never sort again. The bands are set out in reach zones and useful storage heights.

That gives a clean ladder of standard heights, each a whole number of tiers: 30 in (76 cm) for two, 48 in (122 cm) for three or four, 72 in (183 cm) for six, 84 in (213 cm) for seven. The 84 in unit is the one to think about, because the seventh shelf costs a step stool and, as the next section shows, it also costs stability.

Anchoring, and the 1/4 in of deliberate lean#

A 9.5 degree tipping angle sounds generous until you subtract what the room already takes. A floor 1 in out of level over 12 in of depth is 4.8 degrees of it. A thick pile carpet under the front feet only tilts the case forward further. Add a child pulling on a shelf and the margin is gone.

Trade practice, not code, is to pack the front feet up by 1/8 to 1/4 in (3 to 6 mm) so a free-standing case leans back by half a degree to a degree, and then strap it. The strap has to go through the top rail or a solid back rail into timber. Two points that people get wrong: a 3 mm (1/8 in) hardboard back panel will tear straight through under a tipping load, and a plasterboard plug on its own is a decoration. Stud centres are 16 in (406 mm) in the US and 400 or 600 mm in the UK, so a 30 in (76 cm) wide case will always cross at least one stud and usually two. What shifts the numbers: format, ladder and built-ins#

A single-format library. If the collection is genuinely all paperbacks, a 9 in (23 cm) deep case at a 9 in pitch fits eight tiers in the same 72 in and holds a third more books in two thirds of the floor depth. Mixed collections cannot use this, which is the honest reason 12 in deep is the default.

Records and media. Vinyl needs 13.5 in (34 cm) of depth and roughly halves every span in the width table, because the load doubles to 45 to 55 lb per foot (67 to 82 kg per metre). Formats and their depths are covered in book, vinyl and media storage dimensions.

Ladders and tall walls. Once a run goes above 84 in (213 cm), a rolling ladder needs 30 in (76 cm) of clear floor in front of it and the top rail has to be structural. Below that, a two-step stool needs 20 in (51 cm) of standing room, which is subtracted from the walkway rather than added to it.

Alcoves and built-ins. A case built into an alcove gains the walls as its sides and loses the need for a strap, but it inherits the room's tolerance instead: alcove walls are rarely parallel, and 1/2 in (13 mm) of taper over 8 ft (2.4 m) is normal, which is why the scribe is planned before the carcass width is cut. Frequently asked questions#

How deep should a bookcase be?

Eleven to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) for general books, 8 to 9 in (20 to 23 cm) for paperbacks alone, and 14 to 16 in (36 to 41 cm) for art and reference books. The odd 11.25 in (286 mm) figure that recurs in ready-made furniture is simply the actual width of a nominal 1x12 board, and it holds a 9.5 in (24 cm) hardback with 1.75 in (44 mm) to spare.

What is the standard height of a bookcase?

Thirty, 48, 72 and 84 in (76, 122, 183 and 213 cm) are the stocked heights, and they are not arbitrary. Each is a whole number of 12 in (30 cm) shelf tiers plus a plinth and a top. A 72 in unit gives six tiers, all of them within reach. An 84 in unit gives seven, and the seventh needs a step stool to use.

How far apart should bookshelves be?

Twelve inches (30 cm) from the top of one shelf to the top of the next is the general figure, giving 11.25 in (29 cm) clear once a 3/4 in (18 mm) board is deducted. Paperbacks need 9 in (23 cm) pitch, art books 15 to 17 in (38 to 43 cm), and vinyl records 13.5 in (34 cm) clear plus a finger of slack.

Do bookcases need to be anchored to the wall?

Any unit taller than about 4 times its depth should be, which for a 12 in (30 cm) deep case means anything over 48 in (122 cm). Fix through a solid back rail into a stud with two straps near the top, not into plasterboard and not into the 3 mm (1/8 in) back panel, which will simply tear out under load.

Does filling a bookcase with books make it more stable?

No. Loading it evenly leaves the tipping angle exactly where it was, because the extra weight raises the overturning moment and the restoring moment in the same proportion. Loading the top shelves first makes it worse: filling only the upper half lifts the centre of gravity to three quarters of the height and cuts the tipping angle by about a third.

How much weight can a bookcase hold?

The shelf is the limit, not the carcass. A 3/4 in (18 mm) melamine shelf carrying mixed hardbacks at 20 to 25 lb per foot (30 to 37 kg per metre) reaches its visible sag limit at about 28 in (71 cm) of clear span, so a 36 in (91 cm) wide bookcase in that material needs a centre divider. A full 30 x 72 in unit delivers 350 to 400 lb (159 to 181 kg) into the floor.

What width should a bookcase be?

Thirty to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) nominal, giving 28.5 to 34.5 in (72 to 88 cm) of clear shelf span between 3/4 in sides. The upper end is at the limit for solid timber and beyond it for chipboard. Can a bookcase go on an upper floor?

Yes, but do the sum first. A 30 in (76 cm) wide unit full of hardbacks weighs 350 to 400 lb (159 to 181 kg) on a footprint of 2.5 sq ft (0.23 m2), which is 140 to 160 lb per square foot (7 to 8 kPa) against a residential floor design figure of 40 lb per square foot. Place it against a wall, ideally across the joists rather than along one.
