Headboard heights and widths by bed size

A headboard is sold by its total height, and total height is the one figure that tells you nothing.

Short answer

A standard headboard stands 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) above the finished floor, a tall one 58 to 65 in (147 to 165 cm). What matters is the exposed height above the mattress top: below 18 in (46 cm) the pillows crest it and it is decoration, and above 32 in (81 cm) it supports the head for reading. Width runs 2 to 5 in (5 to 13 cm) wider than the mattress on a frame-mounted panel.

A headboard is advertised with one number, its total height, and that number is close to meaningless on its own. What a headboard does depends entirely on how far it stands above the finished top of the mattress, and the mattress is almost always chosen separately, later, and often by somebody else. Two beds with identical 54 in (137 cm) headboards can differ by 8 in (20 cm) in the only dimension that decides whether the thing works.

The three heights, and which one to specify#

There are three numbers in play and the trade uses all of them loosely.

  • Overall height: finished floor to the top of the panel. This is the catalogue figure.
  • Panel height: the height of the board itself, excluding the struts that bolt to the frame and vanish behind the base.
  • Exposed height: overall height minus the height of the finished mattress top. This is the working dimension and nobody publishes it.

Mattress top height is itself a sum: deck or base height, plus foundation if there is one, plus mattress thickness. A common modern platform bed gives 13 in (33 cm) of deck plus a 12 in (30 cm) mattress, so the top lands at 25 in (64 cm). Against a 54 in headboard that leaves 29 in (74 cm) exposed. Put the same headboard on a 7.5 in (19 cm) metal frame carrying a 9 in (23 cm) foundation and a 14 in (36 cm) mattress and the top is at 30.5 in (77 cm), leaving only 23.5 in (60 cm). Same headboard, different piece of furniture.

Floor finish counts too, because it lifts the bed but not the wall. A 3/8 in (10 mm) underlay plus a thick carpet raises the whole bed by roughly 1 in (25 mm) and takes exactly that much off a wall-mounted panel's exposed height, which is worth checking against the underlay and subfloor build-up before a panel is fixed. Measure the datum on the finished floor, the way how to measure a room properly sets out, and write the mattress top height on the drawing.

Why 48 in is standard and 36 in is decoration#

Three body dimensions produce the three bands the trade sells, and the arithmetic is short.

Panero and Zelnik give sitting shoulder height, seat surface to the top of the shoulder, as roughly 21 to 25 in (53 to 64 cm) across adults, and sitting height, seat surface to the crown of the head, as 31 to 38 in (79 to 97 cm). A seated person compresses a mattress by 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm), so both figures should be reduced by about 2 in when the seat is a bed. Pillows do not raise you: a stacked pair 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm) thick pushes you forward, not up.

That gives three thresholds in exposed height:

  1. 14 to 18 in (36 to 46 cm) exposed: tall enough to hold pillows in place and stop them sliding down the wall. Below this the headboard is trim.
  2. 22 to 26 in (56 to 66 cm) exposed: supports the back to the shoulder blades with a pillow behind you. This is the useful minimum for anyone who sits up in bed.
  3. 32 to 38 in (81 to 97 cm) exposed: supports the head as well, which is what people actually mean when they say a headboard is comfortable.

Add a 25 in (64 cm) mattress top to each and you get 39 to 43 in, 47 to 51 in and 57 to 63 in. Those are the low, standard and tall bands to within an inch, which is a good sign that the trade figures are not arbitrary.

Width: the mattress plus 2 to 5 in#

A headboard bolted to the bed frame is sized from the frame, not the mattress, and frames run 2 to 5 in (5 to 13 cm) wider overall than the mattress they carry. That is why a queen headboard is 62 to 65 in (157 to 165 cm) rather than 60 in. The margin also covers the bedding overhang, which is 1 to 2 in (3 to 5 cm) of duvet and protector hanging over each side.

Wall-mounted panels are the free variable, and the trap is the middle ground. Our own recommendation is binary: either hold the panel within an inch of the frame width so it reads as part of the bed, or push it at least 6 in (15 cm) past the mattress on each side so it reads as a wall element. A panel 3 in (8 cm) wider per side looks like a manufacturing error.

The widest useful version nests the nightstands inside the panel. A queen at 60 in with two 24 in (61 cm) nightstands and a 2 in (5 cm) gap each side gives 60 + 48 + 4 = 112 in (284 cm) of panel, which needs a wall of at least 9 ft 6 in (2.9 m) to sit on with any margin. Check the nightstand widths in nightstand dimensions and height before committing to that number, because it moves the total by a foot either way.

Panel thickness and the 5 in it takes off the room#

Height gets all the attention and depth is what costs floor area. A flat timber or veneered panel is 3/4 to 1.5 in (19 to 38 mm) thick. An upholstered panel with a padded surround is 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) once the foam, the batten frame and the fabric wrap are counted. A wall-mounted panel on a doubled French cleat adds a further 1.5 in (38 mm) of standoff.

That depth is added to the length of the bed, not absorbed by it. A queen frame at 85 in (216 cm) overall with a 5 in (13 cm) upholstered headboard occupies 90 in (229 cm) from the wall. Add the 36 in (91 cm) that trade practice wants at the foot and the bed alone claims 126 in (3.2 m) of room length, which is more than the shorter dimension of many bedrooms in the minimum and workable room sizes tables. The rest of that arithmetic, including how much the rails add on each side, sits in bed frame versus mattress dimensions, and the bedroom layout checker will run the whole footprint against a real room before anything is ordered.

Setting out a wall panel from the 25 in datum#

Work down from the mattress top datum, not up from the floor, and the numbers fall out in order.

An upholstered panel weighs 40 to 90 lb (18 to 41 kg), which is a cantilevered load pulling out at the top of the fixing, so plasterboard anchors alone are not adequate. If the studs do not land where the panel needs them, fix a continuous timber batten across three studs first and mount the cleat to that. The stud module is the same one that governs a TV wall mount and its stud spacing.

The panel bottom rule is the one people skip. Set the bottom above the mattress top and pillows drop into the slot behind the bed every night, which is a setting-out error rather than a product fault.

Sconces and lamps against a tall headboard#

The headboard competes for wall with the lights beside it. A reading sconce wants its light source roughly at the seated eye level of the person using it, which is 28 to 33 in (71 to 84 cm) above the mattress top, or 53 to 58 in (135 to 147 cm) above the floor for a 25 in (64 cm) top. A tall headboard at 58 to 65 in (147 to 165 cm) sits directly in that band, so the sconce either mounts outside the panel width or the panel width has to shrink.

Three resolutions work. Narrow the panel to the frame width and put the sconces on open wall each side. Take the panel wide and surface-mount the sconces onto it, which needs the cable planned before the upholstery goes on. Or drop to a table lamp, which puts the shade bottom at 58 to 64 in (147 to 163 cm) and sidesteps the wall entirely, using the arithmetic in table and floor lamp dimensions. Deciding afterwards is the one option that fails, because a cable chased in behind a 5 in (13 cm) upholstered panel cannot be moved without taking the panel off.

Ceilings, windows, canopies and divans#

Ceiling height. On a 96 in (244 cm) ceiling a 65 in (165 cm) headboard leaves 31 in (79 cm) of wall above it, which is comfortable. On a 108 in (274 cm) ceiling the same panel starts to look stranded, and the tall band moves up to 72 to 84 in (183 to 213 cm). Windows. A 54 in (137 cm) headboard in front of a window with a 30 in (76 cm) sill covers the lowest 24 in (61 cm) of glass. Where a bed has to go under a window, the low band exists precisely for that, and the sill and head heights tell you how much is at stake before you commit.

Four-posters and adjustable bases. Canopy posts run 76 to 88 in (193 to 224 cm) and want a 9 ft (2.7 m) ceiling. An adjustable base is the harder case: a raised head section lifts the shoulders 8 to 14 in (20 to 36 cm) and slides the mattress forward, so the panel has to be taller and extend lower, and frame-mounted headboards usually cannot be used at all.

Divans. A UK divan base is exactly mattress size and the headboard bolts to struts at the base, not to a frame, which is one of several differences between UK and US furniture sizes. Strut spacings are not standardised between makers, so a headboard and base from different brands rarely bolt together without new holes.

How tall should a headboard be?

Below 42 in (107 cm) the headboard is a visual element only.

How wide should a headboard be compared with the mattress?

Two to 5 in (5 to 13 cm) wider in total for a frame-mounted headboard, so a queen at 60 in (152 cm) takes a panel of 62 to 65 in (157 to 165 cm). Wall-mounted panels either match the frame within an inch or go deliberately wide, 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) past the mattress on each side. The widths in between read as an error rather than a decision.

How high should a wall-mounted headboard be hung?

Set the bottom of the panel 3 to 5 in (8 to 13 cm) below the finished mattress top, which for a 25 in (64 cm) top means a panel bottom at 20 to 22 in (51 to 56 cm) above the floor. Work upward from there: a 33 in (84 cm) panel then tops out at 54 in (137 cm). Fix to studs at 16 in (406 mm) centres, never to plasterboard anchors alone.

Do headboards have a standard height?

No. There is no code and no British or European standard that sets headboard height, unlike bed and mattress safety, which BS EN 1725 covers. The 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) band is trade practice built on two body dimensions: sitting shoulder height above the seat surface, 21 to 25 in (53 to 64 cm), and the height of a stacked pair of pillows, 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm).

Why does my headboard look shorter than it did in the shop?

Because the mattress under it is thicker than the one in the display. Exposed height is total height minus mattress top height, and mattress top height is the sum of deck, foundation and mattress. Swapping a 10 in (25 cm) mattress for a 14 in (36 cm) one on the same base removes 4 in (10 cm) of visible headboard and moves it further below the pillow line.

Can a headboard go in front of a window?

It can, but work out what it covers first. A 54 in (137 cm) headboard in front of a window with a sill at 30 in (76 cm) blocks the bottom 24 in (61 cm) of glass, which on a typical 48 in (122 cm) tall sash is half the daylight. Low headboards of 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm) exist largely for this situation.

How much clearance does a headboard need from the wall?

None in principle, but a skirting board of 5/8 to 3/4 in (16 to 19 mm) forces a floor-standing headboard that much forward, and the mattress follows it. Either notch the legs, remove the skirting behind the bed, or plan for the offset. A wall-mounted panel on a doubled French cleat sits about 1.5 in (38 mm) proud of the wall for the same reason.

What headboard height suits an 8 ft ceiling?

Anything up to about 65 in (165 cm) sits comfortably under a 96 in (244 cm) ceiling, leaving 31 in (79 cm) of wall above. Our own working rule is to keep the top of the panel at least 18 in (46 cm) below the ceiling, or to run it right up to the ceiling as a full-height panel. Stopping 6 or 8 in short looks unresolved.
