Short answer

About 3 in (8 cm) wider and 3 in longer than the mattress, so a queen bed on a typical frame is 63 x 83 in (160 x 211 cm). That is the median across 36 queen frames from IKEA, Thuma, Zinus, Avocado and Sixpenny. A platform with no outer rail adds nothing at all. A thick upholstered headboard adds 8 to 14 in (20 to 36 cm) of length, and the widest frames in the set run 9 to 15 in (23 to 38 cm) wider than the mattress.

A bed frame is typically 3 in (8 cm) wider and 3 in longer than the mattress it holds, which puts a queen at 63 x 83 in (160 x 211 cm) on the floor. That is the median of 36 queen frames whose makers publish both the frame and the mattress size. The figure usually quoted is 2 to 6 in (5 to 15 cm) per side. Only 12 of the 36 frames fall inside that band, and 23 add less than 2 in per side. The real range runs from nothing to 15 in (38 cm), and the type of frame decides where a bed lands in it.

Three sizes on every bed listing, and the face each is measured to#

Mattress size is the nominal size class: 60 x 80 in (152 x 203 cm) for a US queen, 76 x 80 in (193 x 203 cm) for a king. It is not a measurement. IKEA's US frame listings, for example, give the queen mattress as 59 7/8 x 79 1/2 in.

Mattress pocket is the clear space inside the rails, headboard and footboard: Zinus's inner frame, Sixpenny's space for mattress.

Overall size is the outside of the frame at its widest and longest points, and those points are not always on the rails. On a bed with a wide headboard, the headboard is the widest point. Overall size is the only one of the three that matters for the room, because walls, nightstands and walkways all meet the outside of the frame.

The difference between overall size and mattress size is what this page measures. Plan from a mattress chart, as most bed sizes and room sizes tables do, and every frame-dependent number will be short by whatever the frame adds. The glossary covers the neighbouring bed terms, from the divan to the cot mattress gap.

IKEA frames come from the US listings, which give the frame and the mattress size on the same page. Where a storage version shares the plain frame's size, it appears once.

The middle of the 36 by width is 63 in (160 cm), 3 in over the mattress, and by length 82.9 in (211 cm), 2.9 in over.

Why the median is 3 in: a frame adds two rails, not a percentage#

Overall width is the mattress pocket plus a rail on each side. Sixpenny publishes all three, so the sum can be checked. The Neva's pocket is 61 in (155 cm) and its side rails are 3 in (8 cm): 61 + 3 + 3 = 67 in (170 cm), the width Sixpenny gives for its footboard. The Devyn has 4 in (10 cm) rails: 61 + 4 + 4 = 69 in (175 cm), its overall width.

Zinus publishes outer and inner frames, which gives the rail directly: 0.6 in (15 mm) a side on the Allen, 1.7 in (43 mm) on the Linda, 1.25 in (32 mm) on the upholstered Dachelle. A rail 0.5 to 2 in thick, plus up to an inch of play in the pocket, is where the median 3 in comes from.

Length works the same way, except that one end carries the headboard. The Devyn's 81 in (206 cm) pocket plus a 9 in (23 cm) headboard and a 4 in (10 cm) footboard is 81 + 9 + 4 = 94 in (239 cm), its listed length. That is why upholstered beds add more length than width.

Platform, rails or upholstery: the frame type decides the addition#

Grouped by construction, the 36 frames separate cleanly.

Platforms with no outer rail stop at the mattress edge or half an inch inside it, so the mattress edge is the bed edge. Frames with rails are the bulk of the market: most add 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) each way in total, and the widest, IKEA's MALM and BJÖRKSNÄS, add 6.1 and 7.75 in (16 and 20 cm). Upholstered frames spread the most, from IKEA's SLATTUM at 1.4 in, no more than a plain wood frame, to Sixpenny's Neva at 15 in. Sixpenny's California king Florette is 105 in (267 cm) wide, 33 in more than its mattress.

A king or a twin frame adds the same inches as a queen#

Because a frame adds rails rather than a proportion, the addition barely changes between sizes. Four makers publish every size:

The City frame is 2 in (5 cm) larger each way in every size. Thuma's is 5 in (13 cm) larger each way from full to California king, and 6 in wider on the twins.

So the frame matters most on the smallest beds: 2 in is 5 per cent of a twin's width and under 3 per cent of a king's. That is the arithmetic behind kids bed sizes by age and teen room dimensions, where 3 in a side comes out of an already narrow strip of floor. Between queen and king the frame changes nothing, and the difference stays the mattress's 16 in (41 cm), as queen vs king works through.

What 0 to 15 in of frame costs in a 10 ft bedroom#

Trade practice wants 30 in (76 cm) beside each side you get in and out of, 24 in (61 cm) at the least, and 36 in (91 cm) at the foot where it is a route, as bedroom clearances sets out. Centred in a 10 ft (120 in, 3.05 m) wide room:

Sixpenny Neva, at the headboard75 in (191 cm)22.5 in (57 cm)135 in (3.43 m)126 in (3.20 m)

Only the Neva falls below the 24 in minimum, and only at the headboard. Length is where large frames do more damage: the Devyn needs a room 14 in (36 cm) longer than a platform for the same 36 in at the foot. The minimum and workable room sizes assume a frame near the median, the bedroom layout checker takes the overall size directly, and walkway and circulation widths covers the route past the foot. A wider frame also moves the rug: the reveal in bedroom rug size and placement is measured from the frame edge. Sixpenny ships the Neva in two boxes, the longer 87.5 in (222 cm), so measuring the delivery path belongs in the plan too.

Frames shorter than the mattress, and frames for a different mattress#

Frames smaller than the mattress. Zinus's Moiz and Mia queens are 59.5 x 79.5 in (151 x 202 cm), so the mattress overhangs a quarter inch each side. Avocado's metal bed frame is 74 in (188 cm) long in every size from full to California king, 6 in (15 cm) shorter than a queen mattress, and Avocado specifies it for use with a foundation. On these frames the mattress sets the footprint.

Frames sized for a metric mattress. IKEA's US NORDLI and MANDAL queens are listed for a 63 x 78 3/4 in mattress, the European 160 x 200 cm size. A US queen in one sits in a pocket 3 in too wide and overhangs the 79.5 in frame.

Bunk and loft beds are built around guard rails and a ladder, so they add more and in different places; see bunk bed dimensions and ceiling height.

The mattress pocket: within 1.5 in of the mattress#

A queen pocket runs from 59.5 x 79.5 in (151 x 202 cm) on Zinus's Allen and Linda to 61.5 x 81.5 in (156 x 207 cm) on Sixpenny's Neva Storage, with the Dachelle at 60.3 x 80.4 in and Sixpenny's Neva and Devyn at 61 x 81 in (155 x 206 cm). A pocket is never more than 1.5 in (4 cm) larger than the nominal mattress, and on some frames it is half an inch smaller, which is why a soft mattress can sit slightly proud of the rail.

Sixpenny also gives the mattress inset, how far the mattress sits below the top of the rail: 3 in (8 cm) on the Neva and Devyn, 2 in (5 cm) on the Neva Storage. It changes how much headboard shows, not the footprint, which headboard heights and sizes works out. The rest of furniture dimensions takes the other pieces the same frame-first way.

Frequently asked questions#

How much bigger is a queen bed frame than a queen mattress?

About 3 in (8 cm) wider and 3 in longer: the median of 36 queen frames is 63 x 83 in (160 x 211 cm) around a 60 x 80 in (152 x 203 cm) mattress. The spread is wide. Zinus's mattress-size platforms add nothing, IKEA's TUFJORD adds 9.25 in (23 cm) of width, and Sixpenny's Neva is 75 in (191 cm) wide across its headboard, 15 in (38 cm) more than the mattress.

How wide is a queen bed with the frame?

Sixty-three inches (160 cm) is the median, with most frames between 62 and 66 in (157 to 168 cm). The narrowest are platforms that stop at the mattress edge, 59.5 to 60 in (151 to 152 cm). The widest upholstered queens in the set measure 69 to 75 in (175 to 191 cm), and on some of those the extra width is only in the headboard, not along the rails.

Does the frame size or the mattress size matter for room planning?

The frame size, every time. The mattress size only decides whether the mattress fits the frame. Walls, nightstands and walkways meet the outside of the frame, so a queen on a 69 in (175 cm) upholstered frame leaves 25.5 in (65 cm) each side in a 10 ft (120 in) room, against 30 in (76 cm) for a platform that is no wider than the mattress.

Should a mattress fit tightly in the bed frame?

Snugly, with no more than about 1 in (25 mm) of total play. Sixpenny sizes its queen pockets at 61 x 81 in (155 x 206 cm) for a 60 x 80 in mattress, and Zinus's Dachelle pocket is 60.3 x 80.4 in (153 x 204 cm). Zinus's Allen and Linda wood frames measure 59.5 x 79.5 in (151 x 202 cm) inside, half an inch under the nominal mattress, which is why a soft mattress can sit slightly proud of the rail on those frames.

How much longer is a bed with a headboard?

The thickness of the headboard plus any footboard. Sixpenny's Devyn has a 9 in (23 cm) headboard and a 4 in (10 cm) footboard, so its 81 in pocket becomes a 94 in (239 cm) bed. IKEA's upholstered IDANÄS adds 8.25 in (21 cm) of length to a queen, and IKEA's BRIMNES with its storage headboard is 95.25 in (242 cm) long, 15.25 in (39 cm) more than the mattress.

Is a king frame bigger than the mattress by the same amount as a queen?

Yes, nearly. A frame adds a rail, not a percentage, so the addition stays roughly constant across sizes. Thuma's Classic bed is 5 in (13 cm) wider and 5 in longer than the mattress in every size from full to California king, and 6 in wider on the twins. Avocado's City frame is 2 in (5 cm) larger each way in every size, and Zinus's Dachelle is 2.4 to 2.8 in wider from full to king.

Can a bed frame be smaller than the mattress?

Yes. Zinus lists its Moiz and Mia queen platforms at 59.5 x 79.5 in (151 x 202 cm), half an inch under the mattress, and Avocado's metal bed frame is 74 in (188 cm) long for every size from full to California king, with the foundation and mattress running past it. On those frames the mattress, not the frame, sets the footprint.
