Short answer

The common US single is 9 x 7 ft (2.74 x 2.13 m) and the common double 16 x 7 ft (4.88 x 2.13 m), with 8 ft (2.44 m) heights sold for trucks. A standard torsion assembly needs 12 in (305 mm) of headroom above the opening, 3.75 in (95 mm) of sideroom each side, and backroom equal to the door height plus 18 in (457 mm). Below 10 in of headroom you need a low-headroom kit; below 4.5 in (114 mm) nothing standard fits.

Order a garage door and you are asked for two numbers, width and height. Install one and it demands four more: headroom above the opening, backroom behind it, sideroom either side, and the clear height you can actually drive under once the door is up. Only the first two appear on the invoice, which is why the other four are where the problems come from.

The 7 ft (2.13 m) height is an old number. It comes from a period when a family car stood 55 to 58 in (1.40 to 1.47 m) tall and the door was generous by 26 in. A current three-row SUV is 68 to 76 in (1.73 to 1.93 m) at the roof rails, so the same door is generous by 8 in, and a roof box removes the margin entirely. The UK 1,981 mm door is worse still: at 6 ft 6 in it is 2 in lower than a standard interior door head, which is set out in interior door sizes and rough openings.

Width is set by mirrors rather than by bodywork. A crew-cab pickup measures about 96 in (2.44 m) mirror to mirror unfolded, which is exactly the width of an 8 ft door. A 9 ft (2.74 m) opening leaves 6 in (15 cm) each side, and 10 ft (3.05 m) is the width at which nobody thinks about it. Headroom is the one people meet first. The 12 in figure is not a safety margin, it is occupied space: the torsion tube sits directly above the opening, the cable drums sit on the ends of it, and the top section of the door has to swing through a 12 or 15 in (305 or 381 mm) radius curve to change from vertical to horizontal. Take away the radius and the door cannot turn the corner, which is what a low-headroom kit solves by splitting the track into two paths and letting the top section travel on a shallower arc.

The arithmetic that makes an 8 ft ceiling and a 7 ft door go together is exact: 84 in of door plus 12 in of headroom is 96 in, with nothing left over. That is the whole reason those two dimensions turn up in the same buildings, and why an 8 ft (2.44 m) door pushes the ceiling to 9 ft (2.74 m). The same relationship between a fixed opening and the structure above it governs every ceiling height and datum line in a house.

The height you drive through, which is not the height you ordered#

Nominal opening height is measured to the header. Clear drive-through height is measured to the lowest object in the path when the door is fully open, and it is routinely 2 to 4 in (51 to 102 mm) less: the top section curves over and its bottom edge hangs below the header line, the bottom seal adds 1 to 1.5 in (25 to 38 mm), and a centre-mounted operator rail and trolley often hang lower than either.

The pattern is clear enough: the vehicle almost always fits and the thing on top of it almost never does. A roof box on a full-size SUV is the single most common reason a household discovers its door height, usually at 5 mph.

Sideroom, the header and the pier between two doors#

Sideroom is the flat wall beside the opening that carries the vertical track: 3.75 in (95 mm) for standard track, 5.5 in (140 mm) for low-headroom and high-lift assemblies, measured from the edge of the finished opening to the nearest obstruction. A 16 ft door therefore needs about 16 ft 9 in (5.11 m) of wall, and in a garage 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) wide inside that leaves 6 ft 7 in split between the two ends.

Two singles instead of one double changes the geometry usefully. Two 9 ft doors in the same 23 ft 4 in wall use 18 ft of opening, leaving 5 ft 4 in for three piers: roughly 21 in (53 cm) at each end and 22 in (56 cm) in the middle. That centre pier does something a single wide opening cannot, which is to enforce where the cars park. A 16 ft door lets a driver put the vehicle anywhere across the opening, and the 30 in (76 cm) door swing each car needs then depends on two people parking accurately every time. The width arithmetic behind that is on garage sizes: single, double and triple.

The header is the other quiet constraint. A 16 ft (4.88 m) opening carries roughly twice the tributary load of a 9 ft one and typically needs a deeper beam, and that depth comes out of the headroom unless the beam is designed to sit within the floor structure above. Where a wide opening and a low ceiling have to coexist, the beam is the item to resolve first, not the door. Chain, belt or jackshaft, and what each costs in ceiling#

A chain or belt operator mounts centrally on the ceiling with a rail running back from the header, needing 24 to 36 in (61 to 91 cm) of backroom beyond the end of the horizontal track and a power outlet within reach of it, normally at ceiling level directly above the operator head. Outlet heights and the reasoning behind them appear in socket and outlet heights. A jackshaft operator mounts on the wall beside the torsion tube, uses no ceiling space and frees the centre of the ceiling entirely, which matters if a car lift, a ceiling hoist or a garage gym layout is planned.

Anything fixed near the door needs checking against the moving door, not against the closed one: light fittings, the water pipe run, the EV charger cable festooned across the ceiling. Will a 7 ft garage door fit an SUV with a roof box?

Usually not. A three-row SUV stands 68 to 76 in (1.73 to 1.93 m) at the roof rails, and a roof box adds 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm), giving 83 to 94 in against a clear drive-through of about 81 to 82 in under a nominal 7 ft door. Bikes on a roof bar add 36 in (91 cm) and clear nothing under 9 ft.

How wide should a single garage door be?

Nine feet (2.74 m). A crew-cab pickup measures about 96 in (2.44 m) mirror to mirror unfolded, which is the full width of an 8 ft door, so an 8 ft opening gives literally nothing on either side. A 9 ft opening gives 6 in (15 cm) each side, and 10 ft (3.05 m) is what makes a single door relaxed.

Does the rough opening need to be bigger than the garage door?

No. For a sectional door the finished opening is the same nominal size as the door, because the door mounts behind the opening and overlaps it. That is the opposite of a window, where you deduct. What must be larger is the framed structural opening around it, plus the jamb legs and the clear headroom and sideroom around the track.

Can I fit a garage door with an 8 ft ceiling?

Yes, with a 7 ft (2.13 m) door: 84 in of door plus 12 in of headroom is exactly 96 in. There is nothing left for a header below the joists, so the header sits within the joist depth or above it. An 8 ft door in the same garage needs a low-headroom kit at 4.5 in (114 mm) and gives up a little travel speed and a lot of serviceability.

How much does a garage door opening reduce the drive-through height?

By 2 to 4 in (51 to 102 mm). The open door curves over at the top of the opening, the bottom section and its seal hang slightly below the header, and the operator rail or trolley usually hangs lower still. Measure the clear height with the door fully open and a tape held to the lowest thing in the opening, not to the header.
