Short answer

A one-person garage gym needs 10 x 12 ft (3.05 x 3.66 m), about 120 sq ft (11.1 m2), of clear floor with full ceiling height. In a 20 ft (6.10 m) wide double garage that survives a parked car: 78 in of vehicle, 30 in of driver's door and 12 in of wall clearance leave exactly 120 in (3.05 m). It does not survive in a single garage, where the residual strip is 36 in (91 cm) wide and useful only for storage.

A garage looks like the easiest room in the house to train in. It has a slab, a big door and no carpet to ruin. What it also has is a vehicle, a door that retracts into the ceiling, a floor deliberately laid out of level, and a set of services that own their own floor area by law. Subtract all four and the plan gets small quickly, so it is worth doing the subtraction first.

Start with the width, because the car sets it#

Measure the internal width between finished faces, not between the outside of the brickwork, and not between the studs if you intend to line the walls.

A mid-size car is about 78 in (1.98 m) across the body, ignoring mirrors, which add another 10 to 14 in (25 to 36 cm) but fold. To open the driver's door far enough to get out normally takes 30 in (76 cm), a figure derived at length in car parking space and door swing dimensions. On the far side you need at least 12 in (30 cm) to walk past with the door shut.

That is 120 in (3.05 m) of committed width, so the arithmetic reads:

  • Single garage, 12 ft (3.66 m) internal. 144 minus 120 leaves 24 in (61 cm). Nothing fits. The gym exists only when the car is outside.
  • One and a half, 16 ft (4.88 m). 192 minus 120 leaves 72 in (1.83 m). Enough for a bench, dumbbells and a treadmill. Not enough for a bar.
  • Double, 20 ft (6.10 m). 240 minus 120 leaves 120 in (3.05 m). This is where the 10 ft figure comes from, and it is the smallest width that holds a rack and a barbell with the car still parked.
  • Deep double, 24 ft (7.32 m). 288 minus 120 leaves 168 in (4.27 m), a 14 ft width, which allows a rack and a separate cardio or floor zone.

The controlling object is the bar, not the rack. A men's bar is 86.6 in (2.2 m) long, and racking it squarely needs about 4 in (10 cm) of knuckle room beyond each sleeve, giving the 94 in (2.39 m) of clear wall set out in squat rack and lifting platform dimensions. In a garage, add the room to walk round the end of a loaded bar with a plate in your hands, which is another 12 in (30 cm) on the open side: 106 in (2.69 m) in total. A 10 ft strip gives 120 in and absorbs that. A 9 ft strip does not.

Then the length, because the door takes the front of it#

A sectional door does not disappear when it opens. It rotates through the track radius and parks horizontally under the ceiling, and it occupies the full width of the opening for a depth of roughly the door height plus 18 in: 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) for a standard 7 ft (2.13 m) door. Over that strip the clear height drops to the underside of the panels, about 84 in (2.13 m).

An overhead press locks out at about 86 in (2.18 m) for a 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) adult, and a hair over 92 in (2.34 m) for someone 6 ft 2 in (188 cm). You cannot press under an open sectional door. That single fact sets the plan: the training zone starts 9 ft (2.74 m) back from the opening, which in a 20 ft deep garage leaves 11 ft 6 in (3.51 m) of full-height floor, and in a 22 or 24 ft garage leaves the full 12 ft.

Two door options change these figures. A low-headroom track needs only 4 1/2 in (114 mm) above the opening but uses a double track that sits lower in the bay. A high-lift track raises the open door well above the opening, which is the single best modification available to a garage gym and is worth pricing before any other work. The panel, the boiler and the door into the house#

Garages are where a house puts the equipment nobody wants indoors, and most of it comes with a legal clearance attached.

  • Consumer unit or electrical panel. The NEC requires a working space in front of it 36 in (914 mm) deep and 30 in (762 mm) wide, kept clear from the floor to 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m). Nothing may be stored in it, which includes a bench. See consumer unit and electrical panel clearances.
  • Water heater or boiler. A tank unit takes a 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) diameter footprint plus service access, and flue terminals have their own exclusion zones, covered in water heater and boiler clearances.
  • The door into the house. It has a landing, a step and a fire rating, all dimensioned in garage to house door, step and landing dimensions. A platform build-up in front of it changes the step height.
  • Circulation past everything. A route you use daily wants the 36 in (91 cm) that walkway and circulation widths sets for a primary route, and a route you use to carry a plate wants more.

When the car has to stay outside#

In a single garage the gym and the vehicle cannot coexist, so the question becomes how quickly the room converts. Three dimensions govern it.

A wall-mounted folding rack projects 4 to 6 in (100 to 150 mm) against the wall and 21 to 42 in (53 to 107 cm) open, depending on the depth of the uprights, so a 12 ft (3.66 m) wide garage keeps a 9 ft (2.74 m) parking width when the rack is folded. It has to be bolted through the lining into masonry or into at least two studs, because the whole load arrives as a lever arm at the top hinge.

Flooring decides whether the car can come back. Rubber stall mats at 3/4 in (19 mm) are made to be driven over and will take a parked vehicle without complaint. A plywood platform will not: the edge is 2 1/4 in (57 mm) proud, the tyres crush the corners and the sheet delaminates at any water. In a shared bay, either lay a full mat floor and skip the platform, or build the platform in sections light enough to stand on end against the wall, which for a 4 x 8 ft (1.22 x 2.44 m) two-layer section means about 140 lb (64 kg) and two people.

The third dimension is the one people forget: the car outside still needs its 30 in (76 cm) of door swing on the drive, and a car parked square in front of a closed door blocks the only escape route from the room.

Fitting the equipment into 10 by 12 ft#

Across the width, the bar wants 111 in (2.82 m) and the zone gives 120 in (3.05 m), so the spare 9 in (23 cm) goes on the side away from the car. Plate storage goes on the rack uprights or on the back wall, never in the step-back zone. The floor build-up under all of it, which raises you and lowers your headroom by the same amount, is in gym flooring thickness and tile sizes.

Racks above the car, and two rows of light#

Storage should go above the car, not above the gym. An overhead rack hangs 24 to 48 in (61 to 122 cm) below the ceiling, which is precisely the band a pressed bar occupies, so it belongs over the bay where a vehicle roof at 58 to 70 in (1.47 to 1.78 m) is the only thing beneath it. Lighting is worth doing properly, because a garage starts with one batten on the door centreline, which is the worst possible position: it is behind you when you face the rack, so you train in your own shadow. Aim for two rows, set 24 to 36 in (61 to 91 cm) either side of the training centreline, and size the total output using the room lighting lumen calculator against the levels in home gym mirror sizes and lighting levels.

How big does a garage need to be for a home gym?

Ten by twelve feet (3.05 x 3.66 m) of clear floor at full ceiling height is the working target for one person with a rack and a bar. A 20 x 20 ft (6.10 x 6.10 m) double garage delivers it alongside a parked car. A 12 x 20 ft (3.66 x 6.10 m) single garage delivers it only when the car is parked outside, because a car plus its door swing takes 11 ft of the 12.

Can you fit a squat rack and a car in a single garage?

No, not with the car inside. A single garage is 12 ft (3.66 m) wide internally at best, and a mid-size car plus a driver's door swing needs 132 in (3.35 m) of that, leaving 36 in (91 cm). A rack is 48 in (122 cm) wide and a bar is 86.6 in (2.2 m) long, so neither fits in the residual strip.

What ceiling height does a garage gym need?

How much room does the garage door take when it is open?

A standard-lift sectional door parks horizontally under the ceiling, occupying the full width of the opening for the door height plus about 18 in, so 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) into the bay for a 7 ft (2.13 m) door. The underside sits around 84 in (2.13 m) above the floor. The opener rail runs a further 3 to 4 ft (0.9 to 1.2 m) on the centreline.

Is a garage floor level enough for a lifting platform?

Usually not. Garage slabs are laid to fall toward the door so that water drains out, typically 1/8 to 1/4 in per foot (1 to 2 per cent). Across an 8 ft (2.44 m) platform that is 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) of fall, which is why platforms in garages are shimmed and why bar orientation relative to the slope matters.

Where should the rack go in a garage gym?

Against the back wall, facing the door, and at least 9 ft (2.74 m) back from the opening so that the open door panels are not over your head at lockout. The back wall also runs along the slab contours, which keeps the bar level end to end. Bolting into a slab is straightforward; bolting into a stud wall is not, so treat the wall as a backstop and not a fixing.

How cold does a garage gym get, and does it matter dimensionally?

It matters through the build-up rather than the temperature. Rubber flooring expands and contracts noticeably in an unheated garage, so a tiled or rolled floor needs a 1/4 in (6 mm) perimeter gap under a trim. Insulating the door and walls adds 1 to 4 in (25 to 100 mm) to each surface, which comes straight off your internal width.

Can you use overhead garage storage above a gym?

Yes, but not over the training zone. Overhead racks hang 24 to 48 in (61 to 122 cm) below the ceiling, which puts their underside at 4 to 6 ft (1.22 to 1.83 m) in an 8 ft garage. They belong over the car bay or against the back wall above head height, never over the spot where a bar is pressed or a pull-up is done.
