Kitchen counter and cabinet heights
The standard counter height is a compromise struck for a body that may not be yours, and it is cheap to change before the cabinets are made.

Short answer
Standard kitchen counter height is 36 in (91 cm): a 34.5 in (88 cm) base cabinet carried on a 4 in (10 cm) toe kick, plus a 1.5 in (4 cm) worktop. That suits a user of roughly 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 8 in (163 to 173 cm). The personal number is your standing elbow height minus 4 in (10 cm). Baking and table-height zones sit at 30 to 32 in (76 to 81 cm), bars at 42 in (107 cm), and an accessible work surface at 34 in (86 cm) maximum.

What makes up 36 in#
The standard is an assembly, not a single dimension:

The European equivalent runs 720 mm carcass + 100 to 150 mm adjustable legs + 38 to 40 mm worktop, which is normally set to 900 mm (35.4 in). The half inch of difference between the two systems is invisible in use and lethal in a mixed order: an American 1.5 in laminate top on a European 870 mm carcass gives 908 mm, and your integrated dishwasher no longer fits under the run.
Setting the height to your own body#
The working rule is standing elbow height minus 4 in (10 cm). Elbow height averages about 0.61 times standing height, which gives a table you can read straight off:

Measure your own elbow rather than trusting the multiplier: leg-to-torso ratio varies by more than the 4 in correction does. The tolerance is roughly plus or minus 1.5 in (4 cm) before you feel it. Beyond that, a counter that is too high loads the shoulders on every downward task and a counter that is too low bends the lumbar spine on every one.
The multi-height kitchen#
Once you accept that one height cannot serve every task, the plan writes itself:
- 30 to 32 in (76 to 81 cm) for rolling pastry, kneading, using a stand mixer and any seated work. Straight arms, weight over the work.
- 36 in (91 cm) for the main run: chopping, plating, general assembly.
- 37 to 38 in (94 to 97 cm) for the sink, if you can accept the step, or for a tall cook's dedicated prep zone.
- 42 in (107 cm) for a bar top only. Nobody works at 42 in.
A dropped baking section needs only 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) of run. In practice the cleanest way to get it is a full-depth drawer base with a shorter carcass and its own worktop, next to the oven, so the tray travels 18 in rather than across the room. That kind of task grouping is the substance of the zone model.
Depth, and where the inches go#
A base cabinet is 24 in (61 cm) deep. The worktop overhangs the door face by about 1 in (2.5 cm) so drips fall clear of the drawer front, giving a finished depth of 25 in (64 cm). That extra inch is the one people forget when they calculate island aisle widths, and in a galley with two runs it costs 2 in of aisle.
Deeper 27 in (69 cm) bases exist and solve two problems at once: they let a fridge with a 30 to 33 in (76 to 84 cm) body sit closer to flush, and they give room for sockets and a 4 in (10 cm) service void behind the worktop. They cost you 3 in of aisle, so they belong in wide rooms.

Drawers against doors, in cubic feet#
The question is not which stores more. It is how much of the storage you can actually reach.
Take a 24 in wide, 24 in deep, 30.5 in tall base carcass. As a two-door cabinet with one shelf it holds roughly 10 cu ft (0.28 m3) gross. As a three-drawer bank, after losing about 1.5 in (4 cm) of width to runners and roughly 4 in (10 cm) of stacked height to box sides and gaps, the drawer boxes hold about 5 cu ft (0.14 m3).
You give up half the volume. What you buy is that 100 per cent of the remaining volume arrives at your hand without kneeling, where in the door cabinet the back 12 in (30 cm) of the bottom shelf is retrieved blind, on your knees. For pans and food storage that trade is worth making. For a bin, a recycling stack or anything tall, doors still win.
Accessible heights#
A work surface intended to be used seated must be no higher than 34 in (86 cm) and no lower than 28 in (71 cm) under the 2010 ADA Standards, section 902. Under it you need a knee space at least 30 in (76 cm) wide and 27 in (69 cm) high at the front edge, running back at least 11 in (28 cm) at that height, with the toe zone 9 in (23 cm) high continuing to 17 to 25 in (43 to 64 cm). That means removing a base cabinet, not just raising a door.
NKBA's access standards recommend planning at least one work surface at 28 to 34 in (71 to 86 cm) even in a kitchen with no current accessibility requirement, because it is the cheapest thing to build now and the most expensive to retrofit. Broader dimensions are in the accessible clearances guide.
The order to fix the numbers in#
- Decide the finished counter height from the primary cook's elbow.
- Choose the worktop material and confirm its actual thickness.
- Subtract thickness from finished height to get the required cabinet height.
- Check that height against the appliances that must sit under the run, since a freestanding dishwasher usually needs 34 to 34.5 in (86 to 88 cm) and cannot be shortened.
- Set the plinth or leg height to make up any remainder, keeping the toe kick recess at 3 in (8 cm).
- Only then decide where the dropped and raised sections go.
Doing it in that order is what stops the familiar outcome: a beautiful worktop, a dishwasher that sticks out 12 mm, and a plinth cut down to 2 in so nobody's toes fit.

How do I work out the right counter height for my height?
Stand upright, bend your elbow to 90 degrees, and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. Subtract 4 in (10 cm). That is your ideal height for chopping and general work. As a shortcut, elbow height is about 0.61 times your standing height, so a 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) person lands near 36 in (91 cm) and a 6 ft (183 cm) person near 40 in (102 cm).
Can you raise a kitchen counter without new cabinets?
Yes, up to a point. European carcasses sit on adjustable legs with roughly 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in) of travel, so a 900 mm run can be reset to 860 or 940 mm by turning the feet and remaking the plinth. Face-frame cabinets built on a site-made platform can be lifted by rebuilding the platform. Anything more than about 2 in (5 cm) starts to look wrong against the toe kick and the appliances.
How high should a baking counter be?
30 to 32 in (76 to 81 cm), which is 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) below standard. Rolling and kneading need downward force through a straight arm, and a standard counter puts your shoulders above the work. A dropped section 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) wide is enough, and it doubles as a seated work surface at table height.
Should the sink be higher than the rest of the counter?
There is a real argument for it. A 10 in (25 cm) deep bowl set into a 36 in counter puts the bottom of the sink at 26 in (66 cm), so you stoop every time you scrub a pan. Raising the sink run by 1.5 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm), or using a 7 in (18 cm) bowl instead of a 10 in one, removes most of that stoop. The cost is a visible step in the worktop and an extra joint.
What is the standard toe kick size?
4 in (10 cm) high and 3 in (8 cm) deep is typical trade practice, and it is what makes a 36 in counter usable: your toes go under the cabinet so your body can come close to the work. A flush plinth with no recess pushes you 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) further from the counter and effectively raises the working height at your shoulders.
How high should a breakfast bar be?
42 in (107 cm) for a true bar with 30 in (76 cm) stools, 36 in (91 cm) if it is a continuation of the counter with 24 in (61 cm) stools, or 30 in (76 cm) for table height with normal dining chairs. Mixing heights on one island is a common regret: the raised bar section hides the working counter behind it but also blocks light and conversation.
