How to plan layered lighting
A room lit only from the ceiling is a photograph taken with the on-camera flash.

Short answer
Split the room's lumen budget four ways: ambient 50 to 60 per cent, task 25 to 30 per cent, accent 10 to 15 per cent and decorative about 5 per cent, then put each layer on its own switch. Place light in three height bands (floor to 30 in, 30 to 60 in, above 72 in) rather than only at the ceiling. An accent lit 3:1 above ambient reads as interesting; 10:1 reads as theatrical.

The four layers and what each one is for#
A lighting plan is not a list of fixtures. It is four separate jobs that happen to share a ceiling.
Ambient is the level that lets you cross the room, find a door and read a face. Indirect or wide-distribution wherever possible, because its job is to be unnoticed: downlights, a cove, an uplighting torchère.
Task is concentrated light on a working plane: a chopping board, a page, a keyboard, a mirror. It is calculated on the task area rather than the room, and it is always local. A ceiling fixture 8 ft (2.4 m) above a counter is not task lighting, it is ambient light that happens to land there.
Accent is directional light aimed at something worth looking at: a painting, a fireplace, a stone wall, a large plant. It creates the brightness differences the eye uses to read depth.
Decorative is the fixture you look at rather than see by: a chandelier, a candle sconce, a table lamp with a translucent shade. It contributes almost nothing to illuminance and almost everything to whether the room feels finished.

Three height bands, and why ceiling-only flattens a room#
The eye judges depth from the pattern of bright and dark surfaces, not from the total quantity of light. A room lit entirely from the ceiling puts one band of brightness at head height and above, lights faces from directly overhead so the eye sockets fall into shadow, and reads as a lit floor under a dark volume.
Put light in three bands instead:
- Floor to 30 in (76 cm). A low uplight behind a plant, a strip under a floating vanity or bed frame. This band stops the bottom of the room disappearing at night.
- 30 to 60 in (76 to 152 cm). Table lamps, floor lamp shades, sconces, the pool of light on a countertop. The band your eye lives in when seated, and the one most rooms are missing entirely.
- Above 72 in (183 cm). Ceiling fixtures, pendants, high sconces, uplight on the ceiling plane.
Lamp placement, in inches#
Reading floor lamp beside a chair or sofa. Set it 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm) behind the front edge of the seat and 12 to 18 in to the side, so light arrives over the shoulder onto the page rather than past the ear into your eye. The shade bottom wants to be at 40 to 42 in (102 to 107 cm), which is seated eye height. Higher and you see the bulb; lower and the light pools on the chair arm.
Table lamp on a side table. Same target: shade bottom at 40 to 42 in. Side tables run 22 to 26 in (56 to 66 cm) high, per side table and console heights, so the lamp wants to be 24 to 28 in (61 to 71 cm) tall including the shade. A beautiful 18 in (46 cm) lamp on a 24 in table puts the shade bottom at 30 in (76 cm), lighting the tabletop and nothing else.

Washing versus grazing#
Both are ceiling-mounted adjustable fixtures aimed at a wall. The difference is the offset.

Space washers at roughly the same interval as their offset: 30 in (76 cm) off the wall wants 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) centres for an even field. Wider and you get scallops, a legitimate effect but a different one, covered in recessed lighting spacing and placement.
Grazing is unforgiving. It reveals every trowel mark and out-of-plane board. Use it on a surface chosen for its texture, never on plasterboard you hoped was flat.
Getting the contrast ratio right#
Accent lighting works on a ratio, not an absolute.
- 3:1 accent to ambient. The object is the focus but the room stays legible. Right for living, dining and bedrooms.
- 5:1. Noticeably dramatic, still comfortable.
- 10:1. Theatrical. Right for a hallway niche, a stair, a single sculpture.
- Beyond 15:1. The surroundings read as dark and eyes fatigue moving between the two.
Keep the aim near 30 degrees from vertical so reflected glare stays off the axis between the picture and a standing viewer's eye. Hanging heights are in art hanging height.
One switched circuit per layer#
This is the rule that turns a fixture schedule into a room that works at eight in the morning and at ten at night.
- Circuit 1, ambient, dimmed. 100 per cent for cleaning, 30 to 50 per cent for evenings.
- Circuit 2, task. Switched locally: at the counter, the desk, the bed.
- Circuit 3, accent, dimmed. The layer you leave on alone.
- Circuit 4, decorative, dimmed to 20 to 40 per cent. Run at full output a decorative fixture stops being decorative and becomes glare.
With budget for two circuits, put ambient on one and everything else on the other. With one, spend it on ambient and run task and decorative from switched sockets. Plug-in lamps are not a failure of planning, they are the layer that lets a room change.
The 20 minute plan, with a tape measure#
- Draw the room in plan, roughly to scale, with doors and windows. Graph paper, one square per foot.
- Mark the four things you actually do in it. Read here. Work at this table. Cook on this run. Walk this line to that door.
- Mark the task points first, with the fixture serving each and its lumen figure. Task lighting drives the plan because it cannot move.
- Mark the accents. Art, texture, plants, the fireplace. Note the offset: 30 in (76 cm) for a wash, 9 in (23 cm) for a graze.
- Fill in ambient last, in the leftover ceiling, checking spacing rather than count.
- Add the decorative layer where the eye rests when the room is empty: over the table, either side of the bed, in the entry.
- Circle each layer in a different colour. The number of colours is your circuit count. Write it on the drawing before an electrician asks.
- Check the vertical. Ask what is lit between 30 and 60 in (76 and 152 cm). If nothing, add a lamp.
That last step catches most mistakes. Consistent colour temperature across all four layers catches the rest: see colour temperature and CRI at home.
Frequently asked questions#
What are the four layers of lighting?
Ambient (the general level that lets you move around safely), task (concentrated light where you read, chop or work), accent (directional light on art, texture, plants or architecture) and decorative (the fixture you look at rather than see by: a chandelier, a candle-style sconce, a visible filament). Each does a different job and each needs its own switch.
How much of my lighting should be ambient?
50 to 60 per cent of the room's total lumens. In a 3,800 lumen living room that is roughly 2,100 lumens of ambient, 1,000 of task, 500 of accent and 200 of decorative. The exact split matters less than the principle that no single layer carries the room. A room that is 100 per cent ambient is flat; a room that is 100 per cent accent is a shop window.
Should each lighting layer be on its own switch?
Yes. It is the design rule that makes the layers worth having. One circuit per layer means you can run accent plus decorative for an evening, task plus ambient for cooking, and all four for cleaning. If all four come on together you have bought four layers and installed one, and you have paid for flexibility you can never use.
Where should a floor lamp go next to a sofa?

What is the difference between wall washing and wall grazing?
Distance from the wall, and intent. A washer sits 24 to 36 in (61 to 91 cm) off the wall and lays an even sheet of light down it, which flattens texture and makes the wall read as a bright plane. A grazer sits 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) off and skims down the surface at a shallow angle, throwing every brick, stone or plaster ripple into relief.
What contrast ratio should accent lighting use?
About 3:1 accent to ambient for a piece that should draw the eye without announcing itself, and up to 10:1 for genuine drama. Beyond roughly 15:1 the surrounding room starts to read as dark rather than as background, and eyes adapting between the two get tired. In practice 3:1 suits a living room, 10:1 suits a hallway or a stair niche.
