Entry lighting heights and lumen targets

Short answer

Hang the lowest point of an entry fixture at 84 in (213 cm) above the finished floor. That is 7 ft, and it is also the 80 in (203 cm) door head plus a 4 in margin, which is the reason it looks right rather than merely clearing heads. Below 80 in the fixture cuts the door head line and reads as an obstacle. Above about 90 in on a 9 ft ceiling there is no drop left and you have specified a semi-flush fitting.

An entry gets lit twice: once by the fitting, and once by the eye that has just walked in from a street at 10,000 lux or a night at almost nothing. That second condition is why the numbers here are not the numbers for a living room, and why the height of the fixture matters as much as its output.

Everything is measured from the finished floor#

The datum is the finished floor, not the subfloor and not the joist line. It sounds pedantic until you cost it. A stone or porcelain entry floor is commonly 10 mm of tile on 6 mm of adhesive on 6 mm of backer board, which is 22 mm, close to an inch. A timber floor on battens can be 45 mm. If the electrician sets the drop against a bare deck and the floor arrives later, the fixture ends up an inch or two lower than drawn, and in an entry with only 12 in of drop to play with that is a sixth of the whole allowance.

The second datum is the door head, at 80 in (2,032 mm) in almost every house. That line is not decoration: it is the height every cased opening, every architrave and every transom in the plan is set to. Hold both numbers before you choose a fixture, and check the ceiling height itself against ceiling heights and datum lines.

Where 84 in comes from, and what it is not#

The usual justification for 7 ft is head clearance, and the arithmetic does not support it. Adult stature at the 95th percentile is about 74 in (188 cm), and adding an inch of shoe gives 75 in. Head clearance alone would be satisfied at 78 in with 3 in to spare, and building codes are content with 80 in of headroom under a beam.

So the extra 6 in is doing something else.

Drop by ceiling height#

Fixture drop is the ceiling height minus 84 in, minus the canopy. A typical canopy and stem assembly needs 4 in (100 mm) before any shade exists at all.

For the double-height case, sizing the body matters more than the drop. Allow roughly 2.5 to 3 in of fixture height per foot of ceiling height, which for an 18 ft void gives a body 45 to 54 in (114 to 137 cm) tall. Diameter follows the old room rule: add the entry's length and width in feet and read the answer as inches, so a 6 x 8 ft hall takes a 14 in (36 cm) fixture. Stairwells: the nosing line, not the floor#

A fixture over a flight is the one case where 84 in above the floor is not the test. Clearance has to be checked plumb from every tread nosing, because a stair climbs toward the ceiling as it goes. On a flight rising 8 ft, the top tread is 8 ft closer to the fixture than the bottom one.

The method is short. Take the total rise of the flight, subtract it from the ceiling height at the head of the stair, and check the remainder against 84 in for the position where the fixture hangs. Approved Document K in the UK requires 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of headroom over a stair, and the IRC requires 6 ft 8 in (2,032 mm), so a light that drops below the nosing line by even a little is creating a code problem as well as a bruise. Relamping is the second constraint and it is routinely forgotten. If the fixture cannot be reached from a landing, the ladder has to stand on a flight, which means either a specialist stair ladder or a winch mechanism specified at first fix, when it is cheap.

How much light, and where it goes#

Illuminance targets for a residential entry sit around 100 to 200 lux (10 to 20 foot-candles) in the IES guidance, which is more than a living room and less than a kitchen. The lumen method converts that into a fixture specification:

with CU the coefficient of utilisation, around 0.45 for a domestic fixture in a light-coloured hall, and LLF the light loss factor, around 0.85.

Dark walls change the answer more than most people expect, because the coefficient of utilisation falls with surface reflectance. The dark-finish row above assumes a CU of 0.35 rather than 0.45, and the required output rises by 28 per cent for the same visual result. Splitting the total matters as much as the total. One overhead source in a hall puts every face in shadow under the brow. A workable split is roughly 60 per cent overhead, 30 per cent on the walls from sconces and 10 per cent accent, which is the layered lighting model applied to a small room. If the entry has a mirror, the wall layer is not optional.

Sconces, mirrors and the vertical band#

Sconce centres belong at 60 to 66 in (152 to 168 cm) above the finished floor. The upper end of that band puts the lamp above standing eye level, which for most adults is 58 to 64 in (147 to 163 cm), and that is what controls glare in a narrow hall where you pass within arm's reach of the fitting.

Beside a mirror the logic inverts. There you want light on a face, so drop the centre to 60 to 65 in and space the pair 36 to 40 in (91 to 102 cm) apart, which brackets a head rather than lighting the ears. Over a console, the bottom of the shade wants to be 36 to 40 in above the top, putting a 30 in console's light at 66 to 70 in. Those two heights, and the mirror size that goes with them, are worked through in entry console and mirror heights.

Recessed downlights follow the spacing criterion rather than a fixed pitch. On a 96 in ceiling with the work plane at floor level, half the mounting height gives 48 in (122 cm) centres, and the first row belongs 18 to 30 in (46 to 76 cm) off the wall so it washes the surface instead of scalloping it. Outside the door#

The exterior fitting is sized against the door, not the wall. A pair of lanterns flanking the opening each want to be about one quarter of the door height, which is 20 in (51 cm) for an 80 in leaf. A single lantern on the handle side wants about one third, or 27 in (69 cm). Both are larger than instinct suggests, because a fixture outdoors has no ceiling or wall corner to be measured against and the eye reads it as smaller.

Mount the centre at about 66 in (168 cm) above the threshold and set it 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) clear of the casing so the light falls on the door face rather than on the frame. Warm output, 2700K and no cooler, keeps the entry consistent with the hall behind it, which is the argument made at length in colour temperature and CRI at home. The IRC requires an artificial light source at exterior landings serving an egress door and at interior stairways, with switching at each level. That is a minimum, not a design. The useful version puts a switch inside the door and a second at the head of the stair, at the heights given in light switch heights and placement.

Putting the numbers together#

A worked example. A 6 x 8 ft entry with a 108 in ceiling, 80 in doors and pale walls needs about 1,880 installed lumens. Sixty per cent of that, 1,130 lm, goes to a pendant whose base sits at 84 in and whose body is therefore no more than 20 in tall and about 14 in in diameter. Thirty per cent, 560 lm, goes to a pair of sconces centred at 66 in. The last 190 lm is an accent, typically a picture light or a low-level fitting near the floor for night use. Everything is on one dimmer covering a 10 to 1 range, which is the range the eye needs between arriving at noon and arriving at midnight. How high should an entryway light hang?

On an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling it leaves 12 in (30 cm), which is a semi-flush fitting rather than a pendant. Measure from the finished floor, not the subfloor, or a tiled entry will cost you an inch and a half.

How high should a chandelier hang in a two storey entry?

Keep the lowest point at least 84 in (213 cm) above the floor below it and, where there is a window on the entry wall, centre the fixture on the window rather than on the plan. In an 18 ft (5.5 m) void, allow roughly 2.5 to 3 in of fixture height per foot of ceiling, which gives a body 45 to 54 in (114 to 137 cm) tall. Anything shorter disappears.

How many lumens does an entryway need?

Around 1,800 to 2,000 installed lumens for a typical 6 x 8 ft (1.8 x 2.4 m) entry. The arithmetic is 48 sq ft multiplied by a 15 foot-candle target, which is 720 delivered lumens, then divided by roughly 0.38 to allow for the fixture's coefficient of utilisation and light loss. Split it across at least two sources so the space is not lit by one point overhead.

How high should sconces be in a hallway?

Centre them 60 to 66 in (152 to 168 cm) above the finished floor and space them 6 to 8 ft (1.8 to 2.4 m) apart. The 66 in figure keeps the lamp above standing eye level for most adults, which is what stops the glare. Beside a mirror, drop the centre to 60 to 65 in so the light crosses a face rather than skimming the top of the head.

Can you hang a pendant over a staircase?

Yes, provided the lowest point sits at least 84 in (213 cm) above every tread it passes over, measured plumb from the nosing rather than from the floor at the bottom. On a flight rising 8 ft, that means checking the clearance at the top tread, not the bottom one. Also check that the fixture can be reached for relamping from a landing or a ladder that has somewhere flat to stand.

What height should a front door lantern be?

Mount the centre of the fixture about 66 in (168 cm) above the threshold and set it 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) clear of the door casing. Size it to a quarter of the door height if you are fitting a pair, which is 20 in (51 cm) for an 80 in door, and to a third if you are fitting one, which is 27 in (69 cm). Outdoor fixtures look a size smaller than they are.

What colour temperature suits an entry?

2700K, matching the rest of the house, with a colour rendering index of 90 or better. An entry is where the eye adapts between outdoors and indoors, so consistency matters more than any particular number. Mixing a 4000K downlight with a 2700K pendant in the same hall is visible immediately, because both sources land on the same wall at the same time.

Should entry lighting be on a dimmer?

Yes, and it does more work here than anywhere else in the house. Daylight outside runs to 10,000 lux and a night street to under 5, so the eye arriving at the door has adapted to wildly different levels. A dimmer covering a 10 to 1 range lets the entry sit near 200 lux by day and near 30 lux at night, which is the whole point of a transition space.
