How much space do you need in front of a dresser?

The floor in front of a dresser is set by how far its drawers travel, not by how deep the dresser is.

Short answer

36 in (91 cm) of clear floor from the closed drawer fronts to the bed, wall or next piece. That is the drawer's travel plus the 21 in (533 mm) of standing space NKBA allows at a dishwasher door. IKEA's 52 dressers that list a pull-out travel 6 1/2 to 11 1/8 in, needing 27 1/2 to 32 1/8 in, so 36 in leaves a margin. Full-extension drawers with 16 in boxes need about 38 in (97 cm).

Leave 36 in (91 cm) of clear floor in front of a dresser, measured from the closed drawer fronts to the bed, wall or next piece of furniture. That figure is the drawer's travel plus room for a body. Across 52 IKEA dressers whose listings give it, the drawer pulls out 6 1/2 to 11 1/8 in (17 to 28 cm). Add the 21 in (533 mm) of standing space the National Kitchen and Bath Association allows beside an open dishwasher, and the need is 27 1/2 to 32 1/8 in. A dresser with full-extension drawers needs more, about 38 in (97 cm), because its drawers come all the way out.

Measure from the closed drawer front, to whatever the drawer would hit#

Three depths appear on a dresser listing, and only one sets the floor you need.

  • Overall depth, back panel to drawer fronts, decides how far the dresser stands into the room.
  • Inside drawer depth is the usable box: IKEA's "drawer depth (inside)", Blu Dot's "drawer interior".
  • Drawer travel is how far the front moves when the drawer is opened to its stop, IKEA's "drawer pull-out". It decides the clearance.

The clearance on this page runs from the closed drawer fronts to the nearest thing in the way: a bed frame, a wall, a door leaf at the end of its swing. How the site takes faces and datums is set out in how we measure.

70 dressers: 18 7/8 in deep, and either 33 or 42 in high#

The set is every dresser with a full set of dimensions on IKEA's US site, plus Poly & Bark, Blu Dot and Medley, read in October 2026, colourways counted once: 57 from IKEA, 5 from Poly & Bark, 5 from Blu Dot and 3 from Medley. Two-drawer chests sold as bedside units are left out. "Low" means wider than tall; "tall" means the reverse.

Depth hardly moves: 55 of the 70 sit between 18 and 20 1/8 in (46 to 51 cm), from a 72 in Poly & Bark six-drawer to a 15 3/4 in STORKLINTA tower. The twelve under 18 in are compact ranges, RAST at 13 3/4 in the shallowest; the deepest is IKEA's HAUGA eight-drawer at 21 5/8 in (55 cm).

Inside, the median drawer is 15 in (38 cm) deep across the 63 dressers that list it, from 11 3/4 in in RAST to 16 in in Blu Dot's Peek and Superchoice. The box is typically 3 7/8 in (10 cm) shorter than the carcass: front, box back, carcass back and the gap behind.

Heights split by shape. Twenty-two of the 37 low dressers have a top between 29 and 36 in (74 and 91 cm); the changing table on a dresser page works from tops of 32 to 36 in. Twenty of the 33 tall chests run 40 to 53 1/8 in (102 to 135 cm).

BRIMNES's three-drawer, at 8 3/8 in, completes the 52; GULLABERG's three-drawer gives no pull-out. The median is 9 1/8 in (23 cm), and no IKEA drawer comes out further than 71 per cent of its own inside depth. SONGESAND's comes out 48 per cent. These are partial-extension drawers: about a third of the box stays inside the carcass when the drawer is open.

Where 36 in comes from: the travel plus NKBA's 21 in#

The body needs room behind the open drawer to stand square to it, look in and lift. The nearest published figure is NKBA guideline 13, on dishwasher placement: 21 in (533 mm) of standing space between the edge of the dishwasher and the cabinets at right angles to it, the strip a person occupies while loading an open door. Guidelines 6 and 7 set a 42 in (1,067 mm) work aisle for one cook and a 36 in (914 mm) walkway. Applying the 21 in to a dresser is the site's own step, not NKBA's.

The arithmetic for the longest IKEA travel:

  • IDANÄS drawer pull-out: 11 1/8 in (28 cm)
  • Standing space: 21 in (53 cm)
  • Clear floor from the closed fronts: 32 1/8 in (82 cm)

That is the floor for the worst IKEA case standing up. The recommended 36 in adds 3 7/8 in (10 cm), the site's margin for bending to a bottom drawer. It is also the figure the site's bedroom clearances give in front of a chest of drawers, and the low end of the 36 to 40 in on the clearances hub.

Full-extension drawers: about 38 in#

A full-extension slide brings the whole drawer box clear of the carcass, which is how the site's drawer slide guide describes a slide rated at 100 per cent extension. The travel is then roughly the box length: the inside depth plus about 1 in (25 mm) for the box's front and back panels.

Poly & Bark's 14 1/4 to 15 in (36 to 38 cm) drawers and Blu Dot's 16 in ones fall in the last two rows if their slides are full-extension; neither listing says. If the back of an opened drawer clears the carcass, use 38 in.

UK, US and wheelchair figures: 750, 1000 and 36 in#

No US code sets a clearance in front of bedroom furniture. The published figures are kitchen guidance and England's accessibility standard.

SourceFigureWhat it covers

Approved Document M4(2)750 mm (29 1/2 in)Access zones by the bed, route to the window
Approved Document M4(3)1000 mm (39 3/8 in)In front of all bedroom furniture, wheelchair users

England's wheelchair-user standard, M4(3), is the only one that names the space in front of furniture: 1000 mm in every bedroom. Its furniture schedule assumes a chest of drawers 450 x 750 mm (17 3/4 x 29 1/2 in), 1 1/8 in shallower than the median dresser here. M4(2) sets nothing in front of a chest. The US side is in accessible clearances.

Room length: 11 ft 6 in for a queen and a dresser at its foot#

With the dresser facing the foot of the bed, the room's length is the sum:

  • Queen bed frame, median: 83 in (211 cm)
  • Clear floor: 36 in (91 cm)
  • Dresser, median depth: 18 7/8 in (48 cm)
  • Total: 137 7/8 in, about 11 ft 6 in (350 cm)

A king frame is the same length, so the figure holds; a full-extension dresser adds 2 in. Beside the bed, the bed sizes and room sizes page allows 30 in (76 cm) on a side you get in and out of and 36 in where a chest of drawers opens on that wall. If the route to the door crosses the dresser, an open drawer blocks a 36 in walkway for as long as it is open, and a door leaf must not swing into the strip.

Tip-over: the 27 in, 30 lb and 3.2 cu ft rule#

Since 1 September 2023, 16 CFR 1261 has made ASTM F2057-23 mandatory in the US. The standard covers free-standing clothing storage units, dressers and chests included, that are 27 in (686 mm) or taller, weigh 30 lb (13.6 kg) or more empty and hold 3.2 cu ft (90.6 litres) or more. The STURDY Act required tests that simulate children up to 60 lb (27 kg), loaded drawers, several drawers open and carpet underfoot, and the Commission's 2023 rule adopted F2057-23 as meeting them.

In this set, 63 of the 70 are 27 in or taller; the seven below are RAST, LILLBERGET, LOTE, GODISHUS and NORDLI's four-drawer, at 20 7/8 to 26 3/4 in. Outside the standard is not the same as stable. Anchor anything a child can climb, as set out in kids room safety clearances, using the restraint the maker supplies.

Dresser or chest of drawers: the same object, two vocabularies#

Cambridge defines a dresser in British English as a kitchen piece with cupboards below and shelves above, and in American English as bedroom furniture with drawers for clothes, sometimes with a mirror on top. Approved Document M's schedule calls the bedroom piece a chest of drawers. IKEA US calls every unit in this set a dresser, including STORKLINTA's 15 3/4 in wide five-drawer tower, so shape is the useful distinction: low and wide for a top at 29 to 36 in, tall and narrow for 40 to 53 in.

The top height decides what goes on it. A mirror above a low dresser follows the rule on the entry console and mirror page: top edge at 72 in (183 cm), bottom 4 to 8 in above the dresser, so about 31 to 35 in tall over a 32 3/4 in top. A television on that top sits 9 to 11 in (23 to 28 cm) higher than on the 22 to 24 in bench a TV stand gives.

Where these figures stop applying#

The listings. The set is the dressers whose pages gave dimensions in October 2026, not whole catalogues. Only IKEA lists drawer travel; no other maker's listing says whether its slides are full-extension.

The 21 in. It is NKBA's standing space at a dishwasher, applied to a drawer. A wheelchair user needs the M4(3) 1000 mm.

Wardrobes and closets. Hinged doors sweep their own width; their figures are in closet dimensions, and the wardrobe and closet planner lays one out beside a dresser. The rest of the furniture hub follows the same rule: the clearance runs to the moving part.

Six checks before you place a dresser#

Frequently asked questions#

How much space do you need in front of a dresser?

Thirty-six inches (91 cm), measured from the closed drawer fronts. The arithmetic is the drawer's travel plus 21 in (533 mm) to stand in, NKBA's figure for the space beside an open dishwasher door. IKEA's dresser drawers travel 6 1/2 to 11 1/8 in, so they need 27 1/2 to 32 1/8 in; 36 in covers all of them with room to crouch at a bottom drawer. Full-extension drawers need about 38 in (97 cm).

What is the standard depth of a dresser?

About 19 in (48 cm). The median of 70 current dressers from IKEA, Poly & Bark, Blu Dot and Medley is 18 7/8 in, and 55 of the 70 fall between 18 and 20 1/8 in (46 to 51 cm). The shallow end is narrow-room furniture: IKEA's RAST at 13 3/4 in (35 cm) and TARVA at 15 3/4 in. Nothing in the set is deeper than 21 5/8 in (55 cm), well short of a 24 in kitchen base.

How tall is a standard dresser?

A low, wide dresser has a median top height of 32 3/4 in (83 cm) across 37 models, with 22 of them between 29 and 36 in (74 to 91 cm). A tall chest, taller than it is wide, has a median of 42 1/4 in (107 cm) across 33 models and reaches 53 1/8 in (135 cm) on IKEA's IDANÄS 6-drawer. Below 27 in (686 mm) a dresser falls outside the US tip-over standard.

How far should a dresser be from the end of the bed?

Thirty-six inches (91 cm) from the bed frame to the dresser's drawer fronts. With a queen frame of about 83 in (211 cm) and a dresser 18 7/8 in (48 cm) deep, the wall-to-wall length comes to 137 7/8 in, about 11 ft 6 in (350 cm). Measure from the footboard or frame rail, not the mattress, because frames run up to 14 in longer than the mattress they hold.

Does a dresser have to be anchored to the wall?

In the US, any free-standing clothing storage unit 27 in (686 mm) or taller, weighing 30 lb (13.6 kg) or more and holding 3.2 cu ft (90.6 litres) or more, made after 1 September 2023, must pass the ASTM F2057-23 tip-over tests, which 16 CFR 1261 makes mandatory. Those tests assume children up to 60 lb. Anchor any dresser that tall regardless, with the strap the maker supplies, into a stud or a suitable wall fixing.

What is the difference between a dresser and a chest of drawers?

In American English nothing much: Cambridge defines a US dresser as bedroom furniture with drawers for clothes, and IKEA US types its tall five- and six-drawer units as dressers too. In British English a dresser is a kitchen piece with cupboards below and shelves above, and the bedroom item is a chest of drawers. By shape, a low dresser is wider than it is tall and a tall chest is the reverse.

How deep are dresser drawers inside?

Fifteen inches (38 cm) is the median of 63 dressers that list an inside depth, with a range of 11 3/4 to 16 in (30 to 41 cm). The inside is typically 3 7/8 in (10 cm) shorter than the carcass, the space taken by the drawer front, the box back, the carcass back and the gap behind. Blu Dot's Peek and Superchoice have the deepest drawers in the set at 16 in.

What does UK building regulation require in front of a chest of drawers?

Only the wheelchair-user standard sets a figure: Approved Document M4(3) asks for a 1000 mm (39 3/8 in) clear access zone in front of all furniture in a bedroom, and the furniture schedule assumes a 450 x 750 mm (17 3/4 x 29 1/2 in) chest of drawers. The accessible-and-adaptable standard, M4(2), sets 750 mm (29 1/2 in) access zones around the bed and a 750 mm route to the window, but nothing in front of furniture.
