Short answer

Hung vertically by the front wheel, a bike occupies 16 in (41 cm) of wall at 12 in (30 cm) alternating hook heights, and projects 12 to 20 in (30 to 51 cm) from the wall. The hook itself sits at 76 to 84 in (193 to 213 cm), which is bike length plus 6 in. Below 16 in centres the pedals of neighbouring bikes interfere; above 20 in you are storing air on the most expensive wall in the house.

Bikes are the awkward case in a garage because they are long, light, valuable and used often, and those four properties pull in opposite directions. Long means they want to be vertical. Light means they can go high. Valuable means they cannot go outside. Used often means they have to come down again in under ten seconds, and that last requirement is the one that quietly sets every dimension on this page.

Read the first two columns together. A vertical hook uses roughly a fifth of the wall length a horizontal mount uses, which is why it wins in nearly every garage. It pays for that with the projection, with the ceiling height it demands and with the lift.

Where the tape starts on a bicycle#

Manufacturers quote wheelbase; storage cares about overall length over the tyres, which is a different and larger number. Wheelbase on a road bike is 39 to 41 in (99 to 104 cm) and on a modern mountain bike 44 to 47 in (112 to 119 cm). Add half a wheel at each end, roughly 13.7 in (35 cm) for a 700c road wheel with a 28 mm tyre and 14.9 in (38 cm) for a 29 x 2.4 in mountain tyre, and the overall lengths become 68 to 70 in (173 to 178 cm) and 70 to 74 in (178 to 188 cm).

Width is measured at the handlebar and it has moved a long way in twenty years. Road bars run 40 to 44 cm centre to centre, which is 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) over the hoods. Mountain bars are now 760 to 800 mm, which is 30 to 31 in (76 to 79 cm), wider than many interior doors are clear. That single figure explains most bike storage failures, and it is worth checking against door sizes, swings and the space they need before you plan a route through the house.

The third width, and the one that decides spacing, is at the pedals. Crank Q-factor plus the pedal body puts the outer faces 9 to 11 in (23 to 28 cm) apart. That is the widest part of a hung bike below the bars, and everything below follows from it.

Deriving the 16 in hook spacing#

Hang two mountain bikes vertically with their hooks at the same height and the bars set the spacing: 30 in (76 cm) of bar plus 2 in (50 mm) of clearance gives 32 in (81 cm) centres. Four bikes then need 128 in (325 cm) of wall, which is 10 ft 8 in and more end wall than most single bays have.

Now offset alternate hooks by 12 in (30 cm) vertically. Bike A's bars sit level with bike B's top tube and pedals, so the two bars never share a plane. The controlling width becomes the pedals at 11 in (28 cm), plus a hand's width each side to grab the frame without barking a knuckle: 16 in (41 cm) centres. Four bikes now need 64 in (163 cm) of wall, half of an 11 ft (3.35 m) end wall. The offset costs nothing, needs no hardware and halves the wall length. It is the single highest-value number on this page.

Two caveats, both from the arithmetic. First, at 16 in centres a mountain bar reaches 15 in (38 cm) toward its neighbour's centreline, leaving 1 in (25 mm). Mix road and mountain bikes on one wall and put the wide bars at the ends. Second, the offset only works if the hooks genuinely alternate, so an odd number of bikes always leaves one gap that cannot be filled by a fifth bike of the wrong bar width.

Skis, boards, bats and bags#

Long thin objects behave like bikes and are stored the same way: the question is only whether they are longer than the wall is tall.

Most of this table is quoted in centimetres because skis, boards and kayaks are sold that way while the wall they go on is built in inches, which is exactly the collision the interior unit converter exists to handle. Two rules do most of the work. Skis and boards stored on end need clear height equal to the longest pair plus 5 in (13 cm) of hand room: a 185 cm ski is 73 in, so 78 in (198 cm) of clear height, which an 8 ft (2.44 m) garage wall has and a 7 ft basement wall does not. Stored horizontally on arms, they take 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) of projection and 8 in (20 cm) of vertical pitch between arms, so a 60 in (152 cm) tall panel of wall holds seven pairs. Anything held on open shelving instead follows the depths and spans in shelf depth and vertical spacing, and if the shelf is carrying wet boots and ski bags the load per foot is high enough that shelf span, thickness and sag is worth a look before the brackets go in.

E-bikes, children's bikes and a 7 ft 6 in ceiling#

E-bikes. A 50 to 60 lb (23 to 27 kg) e-bike cannot be lifted onto an 80 in hook by most people, and no amount of hook rating changes that. The three answers are a floor stand, a horizontal mount at 40 in (102 cm) so the lift is waist height, or a geared hoist. E-bikes are also longer, at 72 to 78 in (183 to 198 cm), and heavier at the rear, which shifts the balance point when tilting.

Children's bikes. A 20 in wheel bike is about 48 in (122 cm) long and a 24 in wheel bike 56 in (142 cm). They hang from hooks at 54 and 62 in (137 and 157 cm), which sits neatly under an adult bike on the same wall in a two-tier arrangement, giving eight bikes on 64 in (163 cm) of wall.

Ceiling height. At 9 ft (2.74 m) the hoist becomes genuinely attractive and the vertical hook gets a comfortable margin. At 7 ft 6 in (2.29 m), which is common in a basement or a converted bay, vertical hanging of adult bikes stops working and horizontal is the only option.

What else is on that ceiling. A hoist and an overhead rack compete for the same volume, and both compete with the open garage door, which owns the ceiling for its own height plus 18 in (46 cm) of backroom. Work that out first from garage door sizes, headroom and backroom and garage shelving and overhead storage, because the door is not negotiable and the storage is.

Four bikes in a 12 x 22 ft bay#

Take a 12 x 22 ft (3.66 x 6.7 m) single bay, which is 144 x 264 in. A saloon at 72 in (183 cm) over the body and 78 in (198 cm) over the mirrors leaves 33 in (84 cm) each side of a centred car. That is enough for a door to open to 30 in (76 cm) and nothing else, so the long walls are spoken for. The front 24 in (61 cm) of depth ahead of the bonnet, however, is dead space in every garage: the car needs 16 to 17 ft (4.9 to 5.2 m) of the 22 ft. Four bikes at 16 in centres on that end wall use 64 in (163 cm) of the 144 in width and 20 in (51 cm) of the 264 in depth, and the removal swing happens in the space you were going to walk through anyway. Vehicle lengths and the walk-around allowance behind that arithmetic are in car parking space and door swing dimensions, and the bay sizes themselves in garage sizes: single, double and triple.

If the bikes are also doing service as gym equipment on a trainer, the floor footprint changes completely: a bike on a turbo trainer needs 96 x 48 in (244 x 122 cm) of clear floor plus a fan, which is worked through in garage gym layout dimensions. Frequently asked questions#

How much wall space does a bike need hung vertically?

Sixteen inches (41 cm) of wall per bike if you alternate the hook heights by 12 in (30 cm), and 24 to 32 in (61 to 81 cm) if every hook is at the same height. The difference is the handlebar: at a common height, mountain bars at 30 in (76 cm) set the spacing. Offset the heights and the widest remaining part is the pedals, at 9 to 11 in (23 to 28 cm).

How high should a bike hook be mounted?

At least the bike's overall length plus 6 in (15 cm), which is 76 in (193 cm) for a 70 in road bike and 80 in (203 cm) for a mountain bike. The 6 in is not decoration: it is the lift needed to clear the hook, plus enough gap under the rear wheel that the bike is not resting on the floor when the tyre is soft. Measure your own bike rather than trusting a catalogue length.

How far does a bike stick out from the wall?

Twelve to 16 in (30 to 41 cm) for a road bike hung vertically by its front wheel, and 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm) for a mountain bike with a wide tyre and a wide bar. Hung horizontally the bike is parallel to the wall, so the projection becomes the handlebar width: 18 in (46 cm) for road bars and 30 in (76 cm) for mountain bars unless you rotate them in line with the frame.

Can I hang bikes above where the car parks?

Not vertically. A hook at 84 in (213 cm) with a 70 in (178 cm) bike puts the rear wheel at 14 in (36 cm) off the slab, which sits squarely inside the arc of an opening car door. Horizontally is possible if the bike bottom is above 60 in (152 cm), which clears a saloon door at 55 to 59 in (140 to 150 cm) but not an SUV tailgate at 76 to 84 in (193 to 213 cm).

How much clearance do you need in front of a bike wall?

About 36 in (91 cm). Eighteen of those inches are the arc the rear wheel sweeps as you tilt the bike off its hook, which we work out from the geometry rather than from any published figure, and the remaining 18 in are the person doing the tilting. Leave only the 20 in the parked bike occupies and the bike physically cannot come down.

How deep should a ski and snowboard rack be?

Eight to 10 in (20 to 25 cm) for skis stored horizontally on wall arms, which holds three or four pairs stacked with 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) between arms. Boards are wider at 245 to 265 mm (about 10 in) at the waist, so allow 12 in (30 cm) of depth. Stored on end, a 180 cm ski is 71 in tall and needs 76 in (193 cm) of clear height.

What size is a golf bag for storage planning?

A cart bag is about 34 in (86 cm) tall and 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) across the top; a staff bag runs to 38 in (97 cm) and 14 in (36 cm). Clubs project 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) above the bag, so plan a 48 in (122 cm) tall opening. Two bags side by side need 30 in (76 cm) of width, which is one standard cabinet bay.

Is a ceiling hoist better than a wall hook for bikes?

It is better for weight and worse for access. A 4:1 pulley hoist turns a 25 lb (11 kg) bike into about 6 lb (3 kg) of pull, which matters for an e-bike at 50 to 60 lb (23 to 27 kg). The cost is that the bike lands in the ceiling zone the garage door and its opener rail already own, and it takes 60 to 90 seconds to retrieve rather than five.
