Short answer

Leave 78 in (198 cm) of clear floor behind the rear of the frame, the run-off zone that treadmill manuals specify, plus 20 in (51 cm) each side for mounting and dismounting. With a machine 70 to 84 in (178 to 213 cm) long, that makes a treadmill a 13 ft (3.96 m) object in plan. Below about 60 in (152 cm) of run-off a stumble ends against furniture. Beyond 84 in (213 cm) you are simply losing floor.

Cardio machines are the only furniture in a house sized by how fast something is moving. Every other clearance on this site comes from a body, a door swing or a manufacturing module. A treadmill's comes from the belt, and that is why it behaves so badly in ordinary rooms.

The rower is the longest object most people will ever put in a spare bedroom, and the treadmill is the widest. Both facts matter more than their areas.

The datum is the rear frame, 6 to 12 in behind the belt#

The run-off zone is measured from the rear face of the frame, the rearmost point of the machine at floor level, and not from any of the three things people measure from instead.

  • The end of the belt sits 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) forward of the rear frame on most machines, because the rear roller and its shroud stick out behind it. Measuring from the belt overstates your clearance by up to a foot.
  • The console is at the front and is irrelevant to the zone, but it is what people photograph and therefore what they place against the wall.
  • The folded position is a different object entirely. A folding treadmill deck raised to vertical shortens the machine to about 40 in (102 cm) but does nothing for the zone, because the zone only exists while the machine is in use and the machine is only in use unfolded.

Take the reading the way how to measure a room properly recommends: one datum, marked on the floor in tape, everything else measured from it. For a treadmill the datum is a chalk line across the room at the rear frame, and the whole layout is built from there.

Where 78 in comes from#

The published figure is a safety area, and the physics behind it is simple enough to check. A belt at 6 mph (9.7 km/h), an ordinary training pace, travels 106 in (2.69 m) per second. A stumble takes roughly half a second to become a fall in which the runner is no longer driving the belt, and in that half second the belt has carried the body about 53 in (135 cm) rearward. The body then leaves the deck with residual speed and slides.

Seventy-eight inches is therefore about three quarters of a second of belt travel at a moderate pace, and rather less than that at the 10 to 12 mph (16 to 19 km/h) the same machine will happily run at. It is not a generous number. It is a lower bound that assumes you fall competently.

The width of the zone follows the same logic and is usually given as the machine width plus 12 in (30 cm) each side, so 59 in (150 cm) for a 35 in machine. Nothing may sit in that rectangle: not a radiator, not a mirror, not a glazed door, and not the corner of a rack. Glass in particular has no business inside the zone unless it is toughened.

Only the treadmill has a run-off requirement in the safety sense; every other row is a clearance for getting on, getting off and swinging a limb. The rower's 30 in each side is not about the machine at all, it is the handle: at the catch, the hands are close to a full arm span apart, which for a 70 in (178 cm) user is about 70 in (178 cm) of swept width.

The ceiling column is worth reading against home gym size and ceiling height, because the two constraints compound. A 74 in (188 cm) user on a curved manual treadmill with a 12 in (30 cm) deck needs 74 plus 12 plus about 9 in of bounce and margin, which is 95 in (2.41 m), and an 8 ft ceiling with any floor covering at all does not provide it. Why a 35 in treadmill will not pass a 32 in door#

A treadmill's smallest cross-sectional dimension is its width, 32 to 38 in (81 to 97 cm), because the length and the height are both larger. You cannot rotate an object below its smallest dimension, so the assembled machine passes a door only if the door's clear width exceeds the machine's width.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A 32 in (813 mm) leaf gives about 29.5 in (750 mm) clear once the stop and the open leaf are deducted; a 36 in (914 mm) leaf gives about 33.5 in (850 mm). Both are less than the 35 in of a standard home treadmill. The rules for turning that clear width into a real answer are in will it fit: measuring the delivery path, and the leaf sizes and the clear width they actually give are in interior door sizes and rough openings and door sizes, swings and the space they need.

The boxed machine is a different shape: typically 78 x 36 x 14 in (198 x 91 x 36 cm), and a 36 x 14 in cross-section tilts through a 29.5 in opening comfortably. That is the whole reason treadmills arrive flat-packed, and it has a consequence people meet years later: the machine that was assembled in an upstairs room leaves it in pieces or not at all.

Four feet carrying 350 lb, and where the socket goes#

Three services decide whether the machine works where you have put it.

The floor. An assembled treadmill weighs 250 to 350 lb (113 to 159 kg) and carries a running body, and it delivers that through four small feet. On a slab this is a non-question. On timber joists it is worth spreading with a mat and worth siting the machine across the joists rather than along a single one. Power. A motorised treadmill wants its own socket rather than an extension lead, and the socket should sit outside the run-off zone, which usually means at the front corner rather than behind. Heights and spacing for that are in socket and outlet heights.

Sightlines. If the machine faces a mirror, the mirror needs to be far enough forward that it is not inside the zone, which in practice means the machine faces a wall it is 12 in (30 cm) from and the mirror is on that wall. What shifts it: a garage, a folding deck, a second machine#

A garage. The slab solves loading and the extra ceiling height solves the deck, but the door track and the parked car both intrude. Worked plans are in garage gym layout dimensions.

Folding machines. Folding halves the stored footprint and changes nothing about the in-use footprint. Buy folding to reclaim a room between sessions, not to fit a machine into a room that is too short.

Two machines. Run their zones parallel and in the same direction. Facing zones into one another means the second user is standing in the first user's safety area, which is exactly the thing the zone exists to prevent.

Metric machines in imperial rooms. European equipment is dimensioned in millimetres and the near-misses are real: a 2,000 mm zone is 78.7 in, not 78. Convert once with the unit converter and record the result, rather than converting repeatedly on site.

Frequently asked questions#

How much space do you need behind a treadmill?

Seventy-eight inches (198 cm) of clear floor, measured from the rear of the frame rather than from the end of the belt, and kept clear of furniture, radiators and glass. That figure appears in the safety area requirements of treadmill manuals following ASTM F2115 and ISO 20957-6. Some manufacturers quote 79 in (200 cm); nobody credible quotes less than 6 ft (183 cm).

What size room do I need for a treadmill?

About 7 x 13 ft (2.1 x 4.0 m) of clear floor for the machine, its run-off zone and side space. The length is the binding dimension and it is set by the run-off, not the machine: a 77 in (196 cm) treadmill needs 155 in (3.94 m) of room in the direction it faces. Width is easy by comparison, at 35 in (89 cm) of machine plus 20 in (51 cm) each side.

What ceiling height do I need for a treadmill?

Your standing height plus 20 in (51 cm) is the rule most manufacturers print, which for a 70 in (178 cm) runner is 90 in (2.29 m) and for a 74 in (188 cm) runner is 94 in (2.39 m). The arithmetic behind it is the deck height of 5.5 to 10 in (14 to 25 cm), 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) of vertical oscillation while running, and a safety margin. Ellipticals are worse: the pedal peaks 10 to 16 in (25 to 41 cm) up.

Can a treadmill fit through a standard door?

Assembled, usually not. A treadmill is 32 to 38 in (81 to 97 cm) wide across the handrails and that is its smallest cross-sectional dimension, so it cannot be rotated below it. A 32 in (813 mm) door leaf gives about 29.5 in (750 mm) of clear width. The boxed machine is a different shape and does pass, which is why treadmills are assembled in the room, and why they leave it in pieces.

How much room does a rowing machine need?

About 10 x 4 ft (3.0 x 1.2 m). The machine itself is 96 in (244 cm) long and only 24 in (61 cm) wide, but the handle sweeps to nearly a full arm span at the catch and you need roughly 24 in (61 cm) behind the seat's rear travel. Stored on end it stands 77 to 84 in (196 to 213 cm) tall, so check the ceiling before you plan to store it upright.

Do I need a mat under a cardio machine?

For a treadmill on a timber floor, yes, and the reason is dimensional as much as acoustic: a 6 mm (0.25 in) mat under the four feet spreads a 300 lb (136 kg) machine plus a running body over a larger area and stops the feet indenting. On a slab it does far less. Remember that the mat adds its own thickness to the deck height and therefore comes out of your ceiling clearance.

Can I put a treadmill in front of a window?

Only if the glass is outside the run-off zone or is toughened. The run-off zone has to be clear of anything you could be thrown into, and a 78 in (198 cm) zone that ends at a window is not clear. Facing the machine at the window instead puts the zone into the room, which is the arrangement that usually works, though it also puts the console in the brightest light.

How far apart should two cardio machines be?

Twenty-four inches (61 cm) between the widest points, which for two treadmills side by side means about 60 in (152 cm) between the centrelines. Their run-off zones may overlap each other only if nobody is standing in them, so in practice two machines want their zones pointing the same way rather than into one another.
