The rack is not the module that governs the room. The barbell is, and it is 2,200 mm long.

Short answer
Allow 94 in (2.39 m) of clear wall and an 8 x 8 ft (2.44 x 2.44 m) platform. The rack itself is only 48 in (122 cm) wide and 48 in deep, but an Olympic bar is 86.6 in (2,200 mm) end to end and needs about 4 in (10 cm) of knuckle room beyond each sleeve to be racked squarely. Below 90 in (2.29 m) of wall you are scraping plaster on every rep. Beyond 104 in (2.64 m) you are storing plates, not lifting.

Nearly every published figure for a home rack quotes the rack. That is the wrong object. A rack is a 48 in (122 cm) box, and a room that offers 48 in of wall is useless, because the thing being racked is 86.6 in (2,200 mm) long and sticks out 19 in (48 cm) past each upright. Start with the bar and every other number falls out of it.
The bar, the plate and the two dimensions that fix everything#
Under the IWF's rules a men's bar is 2,200 mm (86.6 in) overall with a loadable sleeve 415 mm (16.3 in) long, and a women's bar is 2,010 mm (79.1 in). Competition discs are 450 mm (17.7 in) in diameter regardless of their weight, which is why every plate on a loaded bar is flush and why the bar sits at 225 mm (8.9 in) above the floor before a deadlift begins.
Those two numbers, 2,200 and 450, generate the room.
- Wall length. 86.6 in of bar, plus roughly 4 in (10 cm) at each end for knuckles, sleeve collars and the fact that a bar is never racked perfectly centred, gives 94.6 in, call it 94 to 96 in (2.39 to 2.44 m).
- Start height. 8.9 in (225 mm) is the pull height for everyone, tall or short, and it is why a rack of smaller cast iron plates makes a deadlift harder: a 35 lb plate at about 16 in (406 mm) starts the bar an inch lower.
- Drop height. A bar returned to the floor from a lockout at 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm) falls roughly 22 to 25 in (56 to 64 cm) before the plates land. That fall is what the platform exists to absorb.
- Grip width. The knurl rings sit 810 mm (31.9 in) apart under IPF rules and 910 mm (35.8 in) apart under IWF rules, so a snatch grip puts the hands wider than the shoulders by a foot or more. In a room with a 94 in wall, that is fine. In a doorway-width alcove it is not.

The last column is the one to read. Every barbell rack in the list needs the same 94 in of wall, because they all hold the same bar. Only the Smith machine, whose bar is captive and shorter, escapes it. Rack choice therefore changes your depth budget and never your width budget, which is a more useful way to shop than comparing outside dimensions.
Uprights are 2 x 3 in or 3 x 3 in steel with holes at 2 in (51 mm) centres, often tightened to 1 in (25 mm) through the bench press band where the difference between two hole positions is the difference between a clean unrack and a shoulder. Inside depth comes in three sizes: 24 in (61 cm) for a squat-only cage, 30 in (76 cm) as the common compromise, and 36 in (91 cm) if you intend to bench inside the rack with the bench fully within the footprint.
Platform sizes: 8 x 8 ft, five sheets, 2.25 in of build-up#
A platform does three jobs: it spreads the impact of a dropped bar, it protects the floor finish, and it gives you a repeatable position to stand in. All three argue for plywood under rubber rather than rubber alone.

The canonical build is two full layers of 3/4 in (18 mm) plywood laid at right angles to each other, then a third half-sheet down the middle as the lifting strip and 3/4 in (19 mm) rubber on the two outer 24 in (61 cm) bands, so that every surface finishes flush at 2.25 in. That flush finish is not aesthetic: a step at the edge of the rubber is exactly where a bar rolls and where an ankle turns.
A 4 x 8 ft sheet of 3/4 in ply runs about 60 lb (27 kg) and a 4 x 6 ft rubber mat about 100 lb (45 kg), so a full 8 x 8 platform is roughly 500 lb (227 kg) before a rack or a plate is added. Spread over 64 sq ft that is only 8 psf, which is the point: the platform converts a concentrated impact into a distributed load, and its own mass is part of how it does it. Three heights competing: rack, pull-up bar and lockout#
Three separate heights compete for the same air.
- The rack. Racks are made at 72, 80, 90 and 93 in (183, 203, 229 and 236 cm). A 93 in rack on a 2.25 in platform reaches 95.25 in, which under a nominal 8 ft (96 in) ceiling leaves three quarters of an inch and no room for a joist that is not perfectly flat.
- The pull-up bar. It sits near the top of the rack, typically 84 to 90 in (213 to 229 cm) above the standing surface. At the top of a rep the crown of the head is 5 to 7 in (13 to 18 cm) above the bar, so a 90 in bar wants roughly 102 in (2.59 m) of clear height to be comfortable.
- The press. A 70 in (178 cm) lifter locks a bar out at about 84 in (213 cm) above the platform, needing 90 in (2.29 m) with a margin. That arithmetic, and the way floor build-up eats into it, is derived in full in home gym size and ceiling height.
An 80 in (203 cm) rack under an 8 ft ceiling with a platform is the combination that works in most basements and garages: 80 plus 2.25 is 82.25 in, leaving 13.75 in above the rack, and the pull-up bar simply moves to a joist-mounted bar or a doorway bar instead. In a garage, check the door track before the ceiling: sectional door tracks commonly run at 7 ft 6 in (2.29 m) across the whole bay, as set out in garage door sizes, headroom and backroom, and the usable internal heights are in garage sizes: single, double and triple.
J-cup and safety arm heights, set from the sternum#
Rack height gets discussed; the heights inside the rack rarely do, and they are the ones you adjust every session.
J-cups for a back squat. Standing shoulder height for a 70 in (178 cm) lifter is about 57 in (145 cm), and a high-bar squat puts the bar on the traps roughly 2 in (51 mm) below that, at 55 in (140 cm). Set the J-cups so you rise only 2 to 3 in (51 to 76 mm) to unrack, which lands them at 51 to 53 in (130 to 135 cm). Set them higher and you finish every set on tiptoe under a loaded bar. Set them 6 in lower and you quarter-squat the weight out before the set begins.
J-cups for a bench press. With a 17 in (43 cm) bench and arms extended, the bar sits at roughly 42 to 44 in (107 to 112 cm), and the cups go 2 in below it. This is where the 2 in (51 mm) hole spacing on a standard upright starts to hurt: the useful tolerance for a bench unrack is under an inch, which is exactly why better racks tighten the spacing to 1 in (25 mm) through that band and leave it at 2 in everywhere else.
Safety arms. For a squat, the bar at the bottom of the rep is at about 32 to 36 in (81 to 91 cm) for the same lifter, so the pins go at 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm), one hole clear. For a bench, the bar touches the chest at about 25 in (64 cm) above the floor, so the pins go at 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm). Note that safety arm height is measured to the top of the arm, and strap safeties sag 1 to 2 in (25 to 51 mm) under load, which has to come out of the clearance rather than be discovered during it.
Plate horns, spotter arms and the 24 in nobody counts#
Published rack footprints exclude the attachments, and the attachments are what collide with walls.

Plate horns are the common surprise. A 48 in rack with horns on both sides is 68 to 72 in (173 to 183 cm) wide overall, which still fits inside the 94 in of wall the bar demands, but only if the rack is centred on it. Push the rack into a corner to save floor and the horns on that side become unloadable. Storing plates at 12 to 42 in (30 to 107 cm) above the floor also keeps the heaviest objects in the room inside the comfortable lifting band described in reach zones and useful storage heights.
What shifts it: a women's bar, iron plates, a metric room#
Metric equipment, imperial rooms. The roundings are not harmless: 2,200 mm is 86.6 in, not 86, and a 450 mm plate is 17.72 in, not 17.5. Over an 8 ft platform those fractions decide whether a plate clears an upright. The general problem is laid out in imperial and metric: the systems that collide in a house.
A women's bar. At 2,010 mm (79.1 in) it releases 7.5 in (190 mm) of wall, which turns an 88 in wall from unusable into workable. It is the single cheapest dimensional fix available in a narrow room.
Bumper plates versus iron. Bumpers are all 450 mm across, so a loaded bar always sits at 8.9 in. Mixed iron plates change the start height by up to 2 in (51 mm) between sets, and with it the drop distance onto the platform.
The floor beneath. On a slab, the platform is optional and the rubber is about noise and finish. On timber joists it is not, and the question of what the structure will take belongs with the load figures collected in the standards and codes reference rather than with equipment specs.
A garage that still parks a car. Folding racks exist for exactly this, and the full worked plans, including where the car's mirrors end up, are in garage gym layout dimensions. Frequently asked questions#
How much space does a squat rack need?
About 94 in (2.39 m) of clear wall and 60 in (152 cm) of depth for the rack alone, which is 39 sq ft (3.6 m2). The wall figure is set by the 86.6 in (2,200 mm) bar rather than by the 48 in (122 cm) rack, and the depth is the 48 in rack plus a foot of room to walk out. Add a platform and the zone becomes 8 x 8 ft (64 sq ft, 5.9 m2).
What size should a lifting platform be?
Eight feet by eight feet (2.44 x 2.44 m) for a home platform, which is two sheets of plywood wide and two deep. Competition platforms under IWF rules are 4 x 4 m (13 ft 1 in square), which no domestic room offers. A deadlift-only platform can be 4 x 8 ft (1.22 x 2.44 m) with the 8 ft dimension running across the lifter, because the bar is the thing that must be caught.
How high is a loaded barbell off the floor?
Eight and nine tenths of an inch (225 mm) to the centre of the bar, because competition discs are 450 mm (17.7 in) in diameter and the bar sits at their axis. That figure is fixed by the IWF disc standard and is the reason a deadlift starts at the same height for everyone. Smaller cast iron plates drop it: a 35 lb plate is about 16 in (406 mm) across, so the bar starts an inch lower.
What ceiling height do I need for a squat rack?
Ninety-six inches (2.44 m) measured from the finished floor is our working minimum, and it is tighter than it sounds. A 93 in (236 cm) rack standing on a 2.25 in (57 mm) platform reaches 95.25 in, so an 8 ft ceiling leaves three quarters of an inch. Choose an 80 in (203 cm) rack for a low room, or a wall-mounted rack whose pull-up bar height you set yourself.
Can I use a squat rack without a platform?
On a concrete slab, yes, with 3/4 in (19 mm) rubber under the rack feet and under the drop zone. On a timber floor a platform is doing structural work rather than cosmetic work: two layers of plywood spread a dropped bar across several joists instead of one. The platform also raises the whole rack by its own thickness, so decide it before you buy the rack.
How much wall do I need for a wall-mounted folding rack?
The same 94 in (2.39 m) of clear wall, because the bar does not get shorter. What changes is depth: a folding rack projects 21 to 49 in (53 to 124 cm) when open and 5 to 8 in (127 to 203 mm) when folded, so it returns the floor rather than the wall. It also needs two studs at the right spacing, typically 16 or 24 in (406 or 610 mm) apart.
How far apart are the uprights on a power rack?
Twenty-four, 30 or 36 in (61, 76 or 91 cm) inside, giving an outside depth of 48 to 53 in (122 to 135 cm) with 3 x 3 in steel. Hole spacing along the uprights is 2 in (51 mm) as standard, often reduced to 1 in (25 mm) through the bench press range where an inch of J-cup height genuinely matters. Width between the uprights is 43 to 49 in (109 to 124 cm).
Does a squat rack need to be bolted down?
A full four-post power rack with plates loaded on its storage horns rarely does, because 600 lb (272 kg) of plate on a 48 x 48 in base is extremely stable. Two-post squat stands and half racks are a different case and should be bolted or ballasted, since the load sits high and forward. Bolting through a platform into a slab is common; bolting through a timber floor needs the fixings into joists.
