A shelf is a beam, and beams have a span limit that books find within a year.

Short answer
Most books need a shelf 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) deep with 12 to 13 in (30 to 33 cm) of clear height between shelves. Paperbacks work at 8 in (20 cm) deep, art and cookery books want 12 to 14 in (30 to 36 cm), and LPs need 13 in (33 cm) in both directions. Span is the number that fails: 3/4 in (19 mm) solid pine sags visibly beyond about 30 in (76 cm) under a full load of books.

Depth and spacing by what goes on it#
Two numbers define a shelf: its depth, and how much air sits above it.

Three details decide whether the table works in the room.
Nominal timber is not actual timber. A 1x12 board measures 11.25 in (286 mm) and a 1x10 measures 9.25 in (235 mm), so a true 12 in shelf means cutting sheet material. Rip plywood to 11.25 in instead and your built-in matches every board on the market.
Clear height is not pitch. A 13 in gap needs 13.75 in of pitch with a 3/4 in shelf. Adjustable systems drill at 32 mm (1.26 in) centres, so you land on 12.6 or 13.9 in, and you round up.
Finger room. Add 0.5 to 1 in (13 to 25 mm) above the tallest spine. Without it you cannot tip a book out by the head cap, so you pull it by the spine top and tear it.
What a shelf carries#
Books run 20 to 25 lb per linear foot (30 to 37 kg per metre), hardbacks at the top of that range and mass-market paperbacks nearer 15. A 36 in (91 cm) shelf therefore carries 60 to 75 lb (27 to 34 kg), and a 48 in (122 cm) shelf 80 to 100 lb (36 to 45 kg).
Vinyl is the outlier at 40 to 55 lb per linear foot (60 to 82 kg per metre), roughly double, and that changes the structure rather than the fixings. Sag is proportional to load, so the span limit falls by the cube root of two: a material good for 30 in of books is good for about 24 in (61 cm) of records.
Span and sag#
A shelf is a uniformly loaded simply supported beam and its mid-span deflection is 5wL⁴/384EI. The two exponents are the whole story. Sag rises with the fourth power of span: 30 in to 36 in, a 20% increase, multiplies it by 2.1, and 30 in to 48 in by 6.6. Sag falls with the cube of thickness: 3/4 in to 1 in leaves 42% of it, from 1/4 in of extra material.

Supports, studs and brackets#
Wall studs sit at 16 in (406 mm) centres in most US framing and at 400 or 600 mm in UK studwork, so bracket spacings are 16 or 32 in with nothing in between unless you add blocking.
32 in is the trap. It is inside the plywood limit, on the line for oak, past it for pine and well past it for MDF. A 32 in bracket span needs 3/4 in plywood minimum, ideally with a front edge.
Brackets should reach within 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) of the front edge, or at least two thirds of the depth. A 6 in bracket under a 12 in shelf turns the front half into a cantilever and the shelf tilts forward as it loads.
Built-ins: the details that bite#
The baseboard. A 4 in (100 mm) skirting 5/8 to 3/4 in (16 to 19 mm) thick holds the case off the wall by that thickness, so a 12 in deep case projects 12.75 in and its front no longer lines up with the door casing. Either cut the skirting away and butt to the plaster, scribe the case sides around it, or build a plinth taller than the skirting at 4.5 to 5 in (114 to 127 mm). The plinth is easiest and doubles as a toe recess.
The bottom shelf. Keep it 3 to 4 in (76 to 100 mm) off the floor to clear the skirting and let a vacuum head under.
The top. In an 8 ft (2.44 m) room an 84 in (213 cm) case leaves 12 in (30 cm) of wall, which reads as a gap. Either stop at 78 in and treat the top as display, or run to the ceiling with a scribe fillet. Anything between looks like a mistake, and the reasoning is in scale and proportion rules.
Reach, ladders and the shelves you never use#

Standing fingertip reach is around 78 in (198 cm) for a 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) adult and 84 in (213 cm) at 6 ft (183 cm). A library ladder needs 24 in (61 cm) of clear floor in front of the case, and in a home office that strip has to come from somewhere other than the chair zone behind the desk, which is why the ladder rarely happens. A folding two-step is 20 x 14 in (51 x 36 cm) and is what most people need. Depths for the rest of the house are in storage dimensions.
How to check a shelf before you fill it#
- Measure the clear span between supports, not the length of the shelf.
- Identify the material and its true thickness. Melamine shelves are often 5/8 in (16 mm), not 3/4 in.
- Look it up in the span table. Over the limit, the options in ascending cost are: move a support, add a front edge, thicken the shelf, or load it more lightly.
- Load it, lay a string line along the front edge, note the gap at mid-span.
- Double that gap. That is where it will be in a year, and the number to judge it by.

How deep should a bookshelf be?
10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) covers almost every hardback and trade paperback with a little air behind. Paperback-only shelves can drop to 8 in (20 cm). Art, photography and cookery books need 12 to 14 in (30 to 36 cm). Remember that nominal timber is undersized: a 1x12 board is 11.25 in (286 mm) actually, which is the reason so many built-ins measure 11.25 in.
How far apart should shelves be?
Measure clear height between the shelves, not pitch. Paperbacks need 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm), hardback fiction and non-fiction 12 to 13 in (30 to 33 cm), textbooks and reference 13 to 14 in (33 to 36 cm), oversized art books 14 to 16 in (36 to 41 cm). Add 0.5 to 1 in (13 to 25 mm) above the tallest spine so you can hook a finger over it.
How long can a bookshelf span without sagging?
About 30 in (76 cm) for 3/4 in (19 mm) solid pine, 32 to 36 in (81 to 91 cm) for 3/4 in birch plywood, 33 to 36 in for solid oak or maple, and only 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) for 3/4 in MDF. A 1 in (25 mm) shelf or a 1.5 in (38 mm) strip glued to the front edge takes a pine shelf to 44 or 48 in (112 to 122 cm).
How much weight does a bookshelf hold?
Books run 20 to 25 lb per linear foot (30 to 37 kg per metre), so a full 36 in (91 cm) shelf carries 60 to 75 lb (27 to 34 kg). Vinyl records are roughly double that, 40 to 55 lb per linear foot, which is why record shelves need a shorter span than book shelves in the same material.
How thick does a glass shelf need to be?
3/8 in (10 mm) tempered glass is the minimum for a 30 in (76 cm) span carrying light objects, and 1/2 in (12 mm) for 36 in (91 cm). Glass is stiff but brittle and it has no warning deflection, so keep the loads modest, use tempered rather than annealed glass, and support the full depth of both ends rather than pinning the corners.
How do I stop a bookcase tipping over?
Two straps or L brackets from the top rail into wall studs at 16 in (406 mm) centres, not into plasterboard alone. The federal STURDY Act and ASTM F2057 cover clothing storage units, which means bookcases fall outside that testing regime and arrive with no stability requirement at all. Anything over about 30 in (76 cm) tall with a child in the house gets anchored, and heavy items go on the bottom shelves.
How high can the top shelf be?
84 in (213 cm) is the practical limit for a shelf you use, because a 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) adult can reach roughly 78 in (198 cm) comfortably with fingertips. Anything above 84 in is storage that needs a step or a ladder. A library ladder needs 24 in (61 cm) of clear floor in front of the case and a rail 78 to 84 in above the floor.
