Fireplace and media wall dimensions
The fireplace wall is the one place in a living room where getting a dimension wrong is a fire risk, not a styling error.

Hearth extension: the number that is not negotiable#
IRC Section R1001.10 sets the hearth extension for a masonry fireplace:
- Opening under 6 sq ft (0.56 sq m): extension at least 16 in (406 mm) in front of the opening and 8 in (203 mm) beyond each side.
- Opening 6 sq ft (0.56 sq m) or larger: at least 20 in (508 mm) in front and 12 in (305 mm) beyond each side.
Six square feet is smaller than it sounds. A 36 x 30 in opening is 7.5 sq ft and falls in the larger category; a 30 x 27 in opening is 5.6 sq ft and falls in the smaller. Work the area out before assuming, because the difference is 4 in (102 mm) of floor at the front and at each side.
R1001.9 sets the minimum thickness of the extension at 2 in (51 mm), and the material must be non-combustible throughout. A 3/8 in (10 mm) tile bedded on a combustible subfloor is not a hearth extension.
Mantel height and combustible clearance#
Mantel shelves sit 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) from the floor to the top of the shelf in most houses. That is trade practice, driven by the fact that a standard opening top lands at 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) and by the height at which a shelf reads correctly from a seated position. It is not a code figure.
The code figure is the clearance. IRC R1001.11 prohibits combustible material within 2 in (51 mm) of the fireplace opening at its sides and top, and limits combustible material within 12 in (305 mm) of the opening to a projection of 1/8 in for each 1 in (3.2 mm for each 25 mm) of distance from the opening. Turn that into a table:

Read the practical consequence off the bottom row. A timber mantel shelf projecting more than 1.5 in (38 mm) cannot sit within 12 in (305 mm) of the opening at all. A conventional 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) deep mantel therefore has to be at least 12 in above the top of the opening, which with a 36 in (91 cm) opening top puts the shelf at 48 in (122 cm). The trade rule and the code arrive at the same place, which is not a coincidence.
The television above the fire#
Two separate problems, and they need separate checks.
Heat. The plume off a wood-burning opening rises against the breast. Most televisions specify a maximum operating ambient of 40 degrees C (104 F), and prolonged heat degrades the panel and the power supply long before it triggers a shutdown. A mantel shelf projecting 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) deflects the plume forward and is the single most effective mitigation. The test is empirical: run the fire hard for two hours, then hold a surface thermometer on the wall at the height the screen centre would occupy. If it reads over 38 degrees C (100 F), the screen does not go there.
Angle. This is the arithmetic.
Note what the numbers also say: the problem is distance-dependent. At 12 ft (3.66 m) the angle falls to 13 degrees and the objection weakens considerably. Above-fireplace mounting is a bad idea in a small room and a defensible one in a long one. Pull-down mantel mounts drop the screen 20 to 30 in (51 to 76 cm) into a correct position and park it back up, at the cost of 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) of parked depth and a genuinely structural fixing. The two governing rules: the console should be at least the screen width plus 6 in (15 cm) at each side, and it should occupy roughly two thirds of the wall it sits on. The second rule stops an 84 in console on a 9 ft (2.74 m) wall, where it would leave 12 in of wall at each end and read as built-in by accident. Both are proportion rules of the kind set out in scale and proportion.
Depth is 15 to 20 in (38 to 51 cm). Amplifiers and consoles need about 16 in (41 cm) of internal depth and 4 in (10 cm) of rear ventilation, so a 15 in console with a solid back will cook whatever is in it. Cut a vent or buy a deeper unit.
Height matters more than most people expect, because it sets the screen bottom, which sets the screen centre. A 24 in (61 cm) console under a 75 in screen puts the centre at 24 + 2 + 18.4 = 44.4 in (113 cm), a little high. A 20 in (51 cm) console under the same screen gives 40.4 in (103 cm), which is right. Big screens want low consoles. That inverse relationship is the reason the tall, chunky media units of the 50 in era look wrong under a modern panel.
Electric fireplaces and slot fires#
Linear electric fires have no combustion clearance but they do have listed clearances, and they are the piece that most often makes a media wall work. Typical figures, always subject to the specific model's instructions:
- Base height above finished floor: 20 to 40 in (51 to 102 cm). Lower reads more like a real fire; higher suits a screen above.
- Recess depth: 5 to 8 in (13 to 20 cm), which fits a 2x6 stud wall at 5.5 in (140 mm) but needs furring out in 2x4 framing at 3.5 in (89 mm).
- Clearance above the unit: commonly 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) for a heating model. Many manufacturers permit a screen directly above a heat-off model; almost none permit it above a heating one.
- Widths: 30, 40, 50, 60, 72 and 88 in (76, 102, 127, 152, 183 and 224 cm). Size the fire at half to two thirds of the screen width so the hierarchy is clear.
Art above the mantel#
Size the piece at two thirds to three quarters of the mantel width. A 60 in (152 cm) mantel takes a piece 40 to 45 in (102 to 114 cm) wide. Set the bottom of the frame 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) above the shelf, close enough that the two read as one composition, far enough that objects on the shelf do not crowd the frame.
The usual gallery datum, a centre line at 57 to 60 in (145 to 152 cm), does not apply here. Above a mantel the shelf is the datum. A 36 in (91 cm) tall piece with its bottom at 59 in centres at 77 in (196 cm), which is well above the gallery line and correct, because the eye reads the piece against the shelf and not against the floor. Leaning rather than hanging is legitimate above a mantel and nowhere else: the shelf gives the frame a base. On a 6 in (15 cm) deep shelf, a leaned piece up to about 40 in (102 cm) tall is stable. Anything larger gets fixed to the wall behind and leans for looks only.
Working through the wall in order#
- Confirm the appliance and its listing. Masonry, factory-built, insert or electric. The listing decides everything that follows.
- Measure the opening and calculate its area in square feet. That chooses which hearth extension rule applies.
- Set the hearth extension and check it against the finished floor build-up, not the subfloor.
- Set the mantel from the opening top plus the clearance the projection demands, then sanity check the result against 48 to 54 in.
- Decide the screen wall. Adjacent wall, low slot fire, pull-down mount, or no screen. Decide now, because it changes the framing.
- Size the console from the screen width, then check it against two thirds of the wall.
- Rough in power, conduit and the aerial before boarding, and run one spare conduit.
- Only then choose the art, the surround material and the finish. Those are the reversible decisions.

How far does a hearth have to stick out?

48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) from the floor to the top of the shelf is the usual range, and it is trade practice rather than code. What is code is the clearance: a shelf projecting more than 1.5 in (38 mm) must sit more than 12 in (305 mm) above the fireplace opening, because within that 12 in zone combustible material may project only 1/8 in for each 1 in of separation.
Can you put a TV above a fireplace?
Physically yes, comfortably no, and only after two checks. First, heat: run the fire for two hours and measure the wall surface where the screen centre would be. Most televisions specify a maximum ambient of 40 degrees C (104 F). Second, angle: a 65 in screen above a 54 in mantel centres at about 76 in (193 cm), which asks for 20 to 25 degrees of upward gaze from a sofa 6 to 8 ft away. A pull-down mantel mount fixes the angle; nothing fixes the heat except distance and a deep shelf.
How wide should a media console be?
At least the screen width plus 6 in (15 cm) at each side, and ideally about two thirds of the wall it sits on. A 65 in television is 56.7 in (144 cm) of screen, so the console should be 69 in (175 cm) or wider. Consoles narrower than the screen make the screen look like it is toppling.
How tall should a media console be?
20 to 26 in (51 to 66 cm). That range puts the bottom of the screen at 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) once you allow a small gap and a soundbar, which in turn puts the screen centre near the 42 in (107 cm) seated eye height for the common 55 to 75 in sizes.
What size art goes above a fireplace?
Two thirds to three quarters of the mantel width, with the bottom of the frame 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) above the shelf. On a 60 in (152 cm) mantel that is a piece 40 to 45 in (102 to 114 cm) wide. Ignore the usual 57 to 60 in centre line here: above a mantel the shelf is the datum, not the floor.
