Short answer
Allow 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm) between the desk edge and the wall behind you. A task chair needs 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) of travel to push back far enough to stand, plus the depth of the chair itself. If anyone walks behind you, that becomes 48 in (122 cm). Two desks back to back need 60 in (152 cm) between the desk edges, and the smallest honest single-person office is about 7 x 8 ft (2.1 x 2.4 m).

The zone behind the chair#
Every other dimension in a home office is negotiable. This one is not, because it is the space your body moves through several dozen times a day.
A task chair with a five-star base measures 24 to 27 in (61 to 69 cm) across the castors and sits with its back about 20 in (51 cm) behind the desk edge while you work. To stand, you push back until your knees clear the desk, which takes 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) of travel.

The 48 in (122 cm) figure is the one people leave out. A seated person occupies about 36 in behind the desk, and a walkway needs 36 in of clear width of its own. Strictly that is 72 in, but the two overlap in practice because whoever is passing goes behind a chair that is pulled in. If the office is also the route to a bedroom, use 60 in and stop pretending.
Which way the desk faces#
Against a wall. A surface 24 to 30 in from your face is too close for the eye to rest on, and a bright screen in a dark field tires it further. Hang something with depth there, or accept it and take breaks.
Facing into the room. Best for calls and for the eye, because you get a long view past the screen. It costs the most floor: chair zone behind you, route in front, so the room needs about 11 ft (3.35 m) in that direction.
Facing the window. The position that photographs well and works worst. Sky luminance on an overcast day runs to several thousand candela per square metre against a screen at 100 to 300. The iris responds to the brightest thing in the field, closes down, and the screen reads as grey. IES guidance for display workstations keeps the luminance ratio between task and immediate surround near 3:1 and to remote surfaces near 10:1. A window behind the monitor breaks that by an order of magnitude.
The smallest honest office#
The depth adds up exactly: 30 in desk + 42 in chair zone + 12 in shelving = 84 in (7 ft). The width takes a 48 in (122 cm) desk, a 30 in (76 cm) door and its swing, and 18 in (46 cm) of slack: 96 in (8 ft).
Two caveats. At 56 sq ft this room is under the 70 sq ft that IRC R304.1 sets for a habitable room, so it is a study, not a bedroom, and that matters when you sell. And the door must swing against the desk wall or into the hall, because a door swinging into the chair zone takes the only spare floor in the plan.
Two desks, alcoves and landings#
Back to back is the most efficient arrangement, because the two chair zones share one piece of floor and are rarely both fully occupied. 60 in (152 cm) between the desk edges gives each chair 30 in of travel. Side by side wants 60 in (152 cm) of wall per person: a 48 in desk plus 12 in so chair arms and elbows do not meet. An L in a corner is the most sociable and least efficient, forfeiting two walls and merging both chair zones into one congested corner. A desk does not need a room. It needs 60 in wide x 30 in deep (152 x 76 cm) of alcove for two monitors, or 48 x 24 in (122 x 61 cm) for a laptop, plus a chair zone borrowed from the space in front. On a landing the constraint is circulation: keep 36 in (91 cm) of clear route past the desk and check that the chair pushed back does not obstruct the head of the stair. In a cupboard, use bi-fold or sliding leaves, because a pair of hinged 18 in (46 cm) doors sweeps an 18 in radius arc into exactly the space the chair needs.

A vertical filing drawer extends its full 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) and you stand beside it while it is open, which is why the clearance in front is 30 to 36 in rather than 26 in. In the plan above it can only open into the chair zone, which is fine, because you are standing to use it. A printer needs 12 in (30 cm) of clear top beside it for paper in and stack out. Under NEC 210.52 a habitable room is wired so no point along a wall is more than 6 ft (1.8 m) from a receptacle. That is a code minimum, not a desk specification, and a working desk draws on eight to twelve plugs.
- 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm) to centre: the standard receptacles, plus one dedicated double behind the desk.
- 42 to 44 in (107 to 112 cm) to centre: 13 to 15 in (33 to 38 cm) above a 29 in (74 cm) desk, reachable without crawling. The most useful thing to add during a rewire.
- Grommet: 2.5 to 3 in (60 to 80 mm) diameter, 4 in (10 cm) in from the back edge.
- Sit-stand slack: a desk travelling 22 to 48 in (56 to 122 cm) moves 26 in (66 cm), so every cable needs 36 in (91 cm) of managed slack. Cables at full extension is how monitor arms get pulled off desks.

The order to solve it in#
- Mark the door swing. It is fixed and the most expensive thing to work around.
- Claim the chair zone. 42 in behind the desk, 48 in if a route passes. Draw it before any furniture.
- Set the desk orientation from the window, side-on if you can.
- Fit the desk, then storage in whatever depth is left.
- Add power at desk height while the walls are open, if they ever are.
- Soften the room last: rug, curtains, a full bookcase. Then test the call.
If steps 2 and 4 will not both fit, the desk is too deep, not the room too small. A 24 in (61 cm) desk with the monitor on an arm buys back 6 in of chair zone and costs nothing but a clamp.

Should a desk face a window or a wall?
Neither, ideally. Put the desk side-on to the window so daylight arrives across the screen rather than behind or in front of it. A window directly behind the monitor sits in your field of view at 10 to 50 times the screen luminance, so your pupils close down and the screen looks grey. A window behind you reflects off the screen and blows out your face on video calls.
How far apart should two desks be in one room?
60 in (152 cm) between the desk edges if the desks are back to back, which gives each chair 30 in (76 cm) of travel. Make it 72 in (183 cm) if someone has to walk between the two chairs. Side by side against one wall, allow 60 in (152 cm) of wall per person so the chairs do not collide.
How high should power outlets be for a desk?
Two heights. Keep the standard receptacles at 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm) above the floor for the things that live on the floor, and add a second outlet at 42 to 44 in (107 to 112 cm), which is 13 to 15 in (33 to 38 cm) above a 29 in desk, for chargers and monitors. A sit-stand desk needs about 36 in (91 cm) of cable slack in a managed drop.
Why does my home office sound echoey on calls?
Because a hard-surfaced 10 x 10 ft (3 x 3 m) room with a wood floor has a reverberation time of roughly 1.5 seconds, three times what speech needs. A rug, lined curtains, a full bookcase and one upholstered chair take it to about 0.45 seconds, which is the range where a microphone stops picking up the room.
