How high to hang art

The centre line is the easy part. The number that goes wrong is where the hook sits, because the wire moves when you pull it taut.

Short answer

Hang art so its centre sits 57 in (145 cm) above the floor, the gallery convention derived from average standing eye height. Over furniture the rule changes: the bottom edge of the frame goes 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) above a sofa back or console top and 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm) above a mantel shelf. The hook, not the centre, is what you mark: hook height = 57 + (art height / 2) - the wire drop measured with the wire pulled taut.

57 in, and where it comes from#

Galleries hang to a centre line, not to a top or bottom edge, because the centre is the only point that stays constant across mixed sizes. The line most institutions settle on is 57 in (145 cm), occasionally 58 or 60 in.

The reasoning is anthropometric. Average adult standing eye height falls in the high fifties: roughly 61 to 64 in (155 to 163 cm) for men and 57 to 60 in (145 to 152 cm) for women, depending on the population sampled. A centre line at 57 in puts the middle of the work at or just below the eye of nearly every viewer, and looking slightly down at a picture is comfortable while looking up at one is not. It also means a 20 in (51 cm) picture and a 60 in (152 cm) picture on the same wall share a centre and read as one line.

It is a convention, not a finding. Its authority comes from the fact that everyone uses it, which is exactly the property you want in a datum.

Every one of these is the same judgement: the centre line serves the viewer, but as soon as a nearby object gives the eye a stronger reference, that object sets the height instead. Ceilings are covered in ceiling height and proportion.

The furniture rule, which usually wins#

Over a sofa, console, sideboard or bed, the eye reads the gap between the furniture and the frame long before it reads the height off the floor. Get the gap wrong and no centre line rescues it.

  • Sofa back or console top to frame bottom: 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm), 8 in (20 cm) as the default.
  • Mantel shelf to frame bottom: 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm). A deep shelf with objects on it takes the smaller figure.
  • Headboard to frame bottom: 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm).
  • Anything under 4 in (10 cm) reads as a mistake rather than a relationship; anything over about 12 in (30 cm) and the two objects separate.

Width follows the two-thirds rule: art or a group spanning about two thirds of the furniture width, so a 60 in (152 cm) console takes 40 in (102 cm) of art, and an 84 in (213 cm) sofa takes 56 in (142 cm). The same fraction appears throughout scale and proportion rules.

The hook arithmetic nobody writes down#

You cannot mark the wall at the centre line, because the hook does not sit at the centre and the wire does not sit at the top of the frame. The formula is:

Hook height = centre line + (art height / 2) - wire drop

Wire drop is measured with the wire under tension. Hook a finger under the wire at its midpoint, pull straight up as a hook would, and measure from the top of the frame down to your finger. Slack wire measured lying flat will give you a number 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) too large, and the picture will hang that much too high.

Above a bed, and the safety case#

The mass over a bed is the one hanging decision with a real consequence. Keep the piece within the width of the bed, its bottom 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) above the headboard, and prefer:

  • Acrylic or styrene glazing rather than glass on anything over about 24 x 36 in (61 x 91 cm).
  • Two fixings, so a single failure does not drop the piece.
  • A French cleat into at least two studs for anything over 25 lb (11 kg), rather than hooks.
  • Canvas or a light frame over a bed in a room with a suspended timber floor above, where footfall vibration works fixings loose over years.

Stairs, radiators and sun#

Stairs. Take the vertical measurement of 57 in (145 cm) from the nose of the tread directly under each picture's centre. The centres then climb at the stair pitch, typically 30 to 37 degrees, and the group reads parallel to the handrail. Measure gaps perpendicular to that line, not horizontally. Radiators. Leave 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) above the top of the radiator. The convection plume off a panel radiator carries dust and dries paper. A shelf over the radiator diverts the plume forward and lets you hang lower.

Sun. Fading is cumulative and irreversible. Ultraviolet does the most damage per unit of energy, and UV-filtering glazing removes most of it, but visible light fades pigments too. For anything you care about, choose a wall that never takes direct sun, or accept the piece as consumable.

Halve every rating for old lath and plaster, and for plasterboard that has already been drilled nearby. Studs at 16 in (41 cm) centres in the US and 400 or 600 mm in the UK will not line up with your composition, which is precisely what the cleat solves: fix the cleat where the studs are, hang the picture where you want it.

Getting it right first time#

  1. Decide the constraint: furniture below, or open wall. Furniture wins.
  2. Set the bottom edge (8 in above a sofa back) or the centre (57 in on open wall), then derive the other.
  3. Check the top edge against the ceiling: under about 12 in (30 cm) of wall left above, drop the piece or choose a wider, shorter one.
  4. Measure the wire drop taut, not slack.
  5. Mark the hook: centre + half the height - the drop.
  6. Cut a paper rectangle the size of the frame, tape it up, and look from the door and from the seat you will use most before you drill anything.

How high should you hang a picture?

With the centre of the picture 57 in (145 cm) above the floor. That is the gallery standard, chosen because average adult standing eye height lands in the high fifties, so the centre of the work meets the eye of most viewers without them tilting their head. Raise it to 60 to 64 in (152 to 163 cm) on 10 ft (3.0 m) ceilings and drop it to about 54 in (137 cm) in a room used mainly sitting down.

How high above a sofa should art hang?

Leave 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame, with 8 in (20 cm) the usual answer. This rule overrides the 57 in centre line: with a 33 in (84 cm) sofa back, an 8 in gap and a 30 in (76 cm) tall picture, the centre lands at 56 in, which is why the two rules rarely conflict by much.

Where do I put the hook?

Hook height = centre line + half the picture height - the wire drop. Measure the drop by hooking your finger under the wire and pulling it up toward the top of the frame as a hook would, then measuring from the top of the frame down to your finger. For a 30 in (76 cm) tall picture on a 57 in centre with a 3.5 in (9 cm) drop: 57 + 15 - 3.5 = 68.5 in (174 cm).

How high should art hang above a bed?

8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) above the headboard, or above the mattress where there is no headboard, keeping the piece within the width of the bed. Over a bed, favour a light frame with acrylic glazing rather than glass, and use two hooks or two anchors rather than one. Anything heavy belongs on a French cleat screwed into studs.

How do you hang art up a staircase?

Follow the pitch. Measure 57 in (145 cm) vertically from the nose of the tread directly below each picture's centre, and the line of centres will run parallel to the handrail. Keep the spacing between frames measured perpendicular to that sloping line, not horizontally, or the gaps will look uneven even when they are mathematically equal.

How much weight can a picture hook hold?

A single brass picture hook into plasterboard is typically rated 20 to 30 lb (9 to 14 kg), a two-pin hook around 50 lb (23 kg), and a good toggle or self-drilling anchor 50 lb (23 kg) or more. Above about 50 lb, stop using anchors: put a French cleat or a batten across two studs. Ratings are static loads and assume sound substrate, so halve them for old lath and plaster.

Is it bad to hang art above a radiator or in direct sun?

Yes to both for anything on paper. Rising warm air from a radiator dries and cockles paper and pushes dust onto the glazing; leave at least 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) and prefer a shelf or deflector above the radiator. Direct sunlight fades pigments and paper irreversibly. Hang originals on walls that never take direct sun, or use UV-filtering glazing, which cuts most of the ultraviolet but not the visible light that also causes fading.
