Screen size is a function of how far away you sit, and mounting height is a function of where your eyes are.

Short answer
Sit at 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen diagonal, which is a 30 to 40 degree horizontal field of view, and centre the screen at 42 in (107 cm) above the floor, the seated eye height of an average adult. For a 65 in (165 cm) television that means a viewing distance of 6 ft 6 in to 8 ft 10 in (1.98 to 2.68 m) and a bottom-of-screen height of about 26 in (66 cm).

The two numbers a 16:9 panel gives you#
Everything else follows from these:
- Width = diagonal x 0.872
- Height = diagonal x 0.490
A 16:9 rectangle has a diagonal of the square root of 16 squared plus 9 squared, which is 18.358 units. So width is 16 divided by 18.358, or 0.8716 of the diagonal, and height is 9 divided by 18.358, or 0.4903. A 65 in (165 cm) television is therefore 56.7 in (144 cm) of picture wide and 31.9 in (81 cm) tall. Bezels add 1 to 2 in (3 to 5 cm) overall on a modern set, which matters for a niche and not much else.
Viewing distance from field of view#
The industry recommendations are stated as horizontal viewing angles, not distances. Convert them with simple trigonometry: half the screen width divided by the tangent of half the angle gives the distance.
- SMPTE, in its viewing-conditions guidance, sets 30 degrees as the minimum horizontal field of view for a reference display. Distance = 0.4358d / tan(15 degrees) = 1.63 x diagonal.
- THX recommends around 36 degrees and treats 40 degrees as the maximum for a front row. At 40 degrees, distance = 0.4358d / tan(20 degrees) = 1.20 x diagonal.
So the useful band is 1.2 to 1.6 times the diagonal, with the low end giving cinema immersion and the high end giving a comfortable set-and-forget television. Work backwards from your sofa: measure from the cushion face to the wall, divide by 1.6 for the smallest sensible screen and by 1.2 for the largest.

Mounting height#
Seated eye height for adults runs 38 to 44 in (97 to 112 cm) above the floor on a typical 17 to 19 in (43 to 48 cm) sofa seat. Centre the screen at 42 in (107 cm) and you are within an inch or two of eye level for almost everyone in the house.
The number you give the installer is the bottom edge, not the centre. Subtract half the screen height from 42 in: a 55 in set lands at 28.5 in (72 cm), a 65 in at 26 in (66 cm), a 75 in at 24 in (60 cm). Note where the 75 in number falls. It is the top of a standard media console, which is the whole reason the console-and-screen combination looks resolved when it is done properly and looks stacked when it is not.
Above the fireplace, with numbers#
Take a common arrangement: a mantel shelf at 54 in (137 cm), a 6 in (15 cm) gap above it for heat, a 65 in television. The screen bottom is at 60 in (152 cm) and its centre is at 76 in (193 cm). Your eyes are at 42 in (107 cm). The screen centre is 34 in (86 cm) above your eye line.
At an 8 ft (96 in) viewing distance, the upward gaze angle is the arctangent of 34 divided by 96, which is 19.5 degrees. Pull the sofa in to 7 ft (84 in) and it becomes 22 degrees. At 6 ft (72 in) it is 25 degrees.
Now compare that with the ergonomic recommendation. ANSI/HFES workstation guidance places the comfortable line of sight 15 to 30 degrees below the horizontal, because the resting position of the eyes and head is downwards, not level. A screen 20 to 25 degrees above horizontal is therefore 35 to 55 degrees away from where your neck wants to be, held for two hours at a time. That is the argument, and it is a strong one. The same reasoning drives the height rules in our monitor distance and height guide, where the recommended screen top is at or below eye level.
Two mounts change the answer:
- Tilt brackets give 5 to 15 degrees of downward tilt. That squares the panel to your eye, which recovers off-axis contrast and geometry, but it does nothing at all for the neck. Use tilt to fix the picture, never to justify the height.
- Pull-down mantel mounts drop the screen 20 to 30 in (51 to 76 cm) and swing it forward over the hearth. A 65 in screen centred at 76 in when parked comes down to about 48 to 52 in (122 to 132 cm) in use, which is within a few degrees of correct. They need 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) of depth when parked and a solid structural fixing, and they are heavy.

Off-axis seats, glare and the window#
Keep every regularly used seat inside 30 degrees of the screen centre line. At a 10 ft (3.05 m) viewing distance, 30 degrees is 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) either side, so an 11 ft 6 in (3.5 m) seating spread. At 8 ft (2.44 m) it narrows to 4 ft 7 in (1.4 m) each side. That geometry, not taste, is what decides whether flanking armchairs work, and it interacts directly with the conversation angles in your seating layout.
Glare is a placement problem, not a screen problem. A window anywhere in the 180 degree arc facing the screen will reflect in it for part of the day, and matte panels diffuse the reflection into a haze rather than removing it. The reliable arrangement is the screen on a wall perpendicular to the main window wall, with the window falling to one side of the seating rather than behind it. If the screen must go opposite a window, plan for a blind or shade that blocks the lower two thirds of the glazing.

Two details save a re-cut later. First, put the recessed box inside the outline of the panel and low enough that a slim mount does not foul it, then run conduit down the cavity so future cables can be pulled without opening the wall. Second, if the screen may ever move, sink a second conduit to the opposite end of the console. Chasing a wall twice costs more than the conduit does.
Checking a screen size before you buy#
- Sit where you actually sit and measure from your eyes to the wall.
- Divide by 1.6. That is the smallest diagonal worth buying.
- Divide by 1.2. That is the largest diagonal the room can carry without you turning your head.
- Multiply your candidate diagonal by 0.872 and 0.490 to get real width and height, then cut a piece of card that size and tape it up.
- Mark 42 in (107 cm) on the wall and centre the card on it. Sit down. If you are looking up, the card is too high.
- Check the console: it should be at least the screen width plus 6 in (15 cm) each side, and 20 to 26 in (51 to 66 cm) tall.
Frequently asked questions#
How far should you sit from a 65 inch TV?
6 ft 6 in to 8 ft 10 in (1.98 to 2.68 m). The close end is the THX 40 degree field of view at 1.2 times the diagonal; the far end is the SMPTE 30 degree recommendation at about 1.63 times the diagonal. Most living rooms land at 8 to 9 ft, which puts a 65 in screen at the conservative end and makes a 75 in a defensible choice.
How high should a TV be mounted?
With the centre of the screen at about 42 in (107 cm) from the floor, which is seated eye height for an average adult. Subtract half the screen height to get the mounting figure you actually need: a 65 in television is 31.9 in (81 cm) tall, so its bottom edge sits at roughly 26 in (66 cm).
Is it bad to mount a TV above the fireplace?
It is a neck problem before it is a picture problem. A screen centred at 76 in (193 cm) viewed from a sofa 8 ft (2.4 m) away asks for about 21 degrees of upward gaze, against ergonomic guidance that puts the comfortable resting line of sight 15 to 30 degrees below horizontal. A pull-down mantel mount that drops the screen 20 to 30 in (51 to 76 cm) solves it; a tilt bracket does not.
What size TV for a 12 ft room?
If you sit 9 ft (2.74 m) back, which is realistic in a 12 ft (3.66 m) deep room, the 1.2 to 1.6 band gives a diagonal of 68 to 90 in (173 to 229 cm). A 75 in (191 cm) set is the natural choice, and 85 in (216 cm) is defensible if the room is used for film rather than background television.
How wide is a 75 inch TV?
65.4 in (166 cm) of screen, 36.8 in (93 cm) high, on a 16:9 panel. Add roughly 1 to 2 in (3 to 5 cm) for the bezel and frame on a current set. The maths is diagonal x 0.872 for width and diagonal x 0.490 for height, which is worth doing before you order a media console.
How far off to the side can you sit?
Keep every regularly used seat within 30 degrees of the screen's centre line. At a 10 ft (3 m) viewing distance that is 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) either side of centre, so an 11 ft 6 in (3.5 m) spread of seating. Beyond that, contrast and colour shift noticeably on most LCD panels, though OLED holds up much further off-axis.
How much space does a soundbar need?
Most bars are 2.5 to 4 in (6 to 10 cm) tall and 38 to 48 in (97 to 122 cm) long. Leave at least 2 in (5 cm) between the bar and the bottom of the screen so it does not clip the picture or block the infrared receiver, and keep the bar narrower than the screen width. If the bar sits on a console, that console top wants to be 20 to 26 in (51 to 66 cm) high.
