How much room do you need for a ping pong table?

The 19 x 11 ft everyone quotes is a casual figure, and the governing body's smallest room is a third longer.

Short answer

19 x 11 ft (5.8 x 3.4 m) for casual play round a 9 x 5 ft (2.74 x 1.525 m) table: 5 ft behind each end and 3 ft each side, a retailer's figure. Table Tennis England's minimum for recreational play, practice and coaching is 8 x 4 m (26 ft 3 in x 13 ft 1 in) with 3 m (9 ft 10 in) clear overhead; local league play wants 9 x 4.5 m. The smallest room any source names is 15 x 7 ft.

A full-size ping pong table needs a room 19 x 11 ft (5.8 x 3.4 m) for casual play: the 9 x 5 ft table plus 5 ft behind each end and 3 ft each side. That is a retailer's figure. The governing body's smallest graded area, Table Tennis England's Grade 1 for recreational play, practice and coaching, is 8 x 4 m (26 ft 3 in x 13 ft 1 in) with 3 m (9 ft 10 in) clear overhead. Below, every published size is set out as clearance per end and per side, so any room can be read against it, and the garage and the ceiling get their own sections. Screen rooms are on the media room hub, whole-house sizes in standard room sizes.

The table is 2.74 x 1.525 m, and the room is measured from its ends#

ITTF law 2.1.1 fixes the playing surface at 2.74 m long and 1.525 m wide, in a horizontal plane 76 cm above the floor: 9 ft x 5 ft and 30 in, to within a fraction of an inch. Unlike billiards there is no home size and club size: a full-size top is the same whoever makes it, from a JOOLA J500X listed at 274 x 152.5 x 76 cm to a Killerspin MyT at 9 x 5 ft.

The net posts stand 15.25 cm (6 in) outside each side line, so the assembled table is about 1.83 m (6 ft) across at the net. That is the only part of the table wider than its top, and it is in the middle, where nobody stands.

Every figure on this page is a clearance from the table's edge to the nearest obstruction: wall, radiator, door frame, shelf. The ends matter more than the sides, and the governing body's own grades show it: from Grade 1 to Grade 5 the clearance behind each end grows by 9 ft 10 in (3 m), at each side by 4 ft 11 in (1.5 m). Measure the room wall face to wall face at about waist height, where a bat and an elbow travel, as in how we measure.

Five published sizes, from 15 x 7 ft to 14 x 7 m#

Table Tennis England publishes a playing area for each of five grades, with Grade 5 the ITTF's minimum for world title events. Two retailers add the home sizes in circulation. Subtract the table from each and the room becomes two numbers: how far a player can stand back, and how far to the side.

The end and side columns are the site's arithmetic: playing area less 2.74 m, halved, and less 1.525 m, halved. The grades are Table Tennis England's; Grade 5 matches ITTF regulation 3.2.3.1, which sets the playing space at not less than 14 m long, 7 m wide and 5 m high. The same regulation lets veterans' events drop to 10 x 5 m, the size of Grade 3, and wheelchair events to 8 x 6 m, Grade 1's length with Grade 4's width. Feet and metres convert in the unit converter.

Why 19 x 11 ft is everywhere, and why it is not the regulation size#

The figure on almost every page that answers this question is 19 x 11 ft. Sawyer Twain, a games-table retailer, builds it in the open: at least 5 ft (1.5 m) behind each end and at least 3 ft (1 m) each side, so 9 + 5 + 5 = 19 ft and 5 + 3 + 3 = 11 ft. The same retailer calls 20 x 12 ft ideal for a dedicated games room and 16 x 10 ft the minimum where a folding table shares a room. It is a sensible home figure, and it is a retailer's, not a governing body's.

Two things keep it circulating unchallenged. First, the only official figure most writers find is the ITTF's 14 x 7 m, which is for international title events and plainly not a house; next to it, 19 x 11 ft looks like the practical answer, and nobody checks the grades in between. Second, the pages copy each other. Home Billiards gives 19 x 11 ft near the top of its guide and 19 x 15 ft further down, from 5 ft to each wall on all four sides, and also says play is comfortable with 3 ft (1 m) at the ends and 1 ft at the sides, which is 15 x 7 ft. Three sizes on one page, and none derived from a standard.

The governing-body figure for the same use is 8 x 4 m. Table Tennis England's Grade 1 is its recommended minimum for recreational play, practice and coaching, and 19 x 11 ft covers 61 per cent of its floor: 19.4 m² against 32 m² (209 against 344 sq ft). Almost all the shortfall is behind the ends, 5 ft against 8 ft 8 in. At the sides the gap is 3 ft against 4 ft 1 in.

Room length decides the game: 5 ft, 8 ft 8 in, 10 ft 3 in per end#

Because the sides barely change between grades and the ends change a lot, room length is the number to check first. Take 9 ft (2.74 m) off the length and halve it.

32 ft 10 in (10.0 m)11 ft 11 in (3.63 m)Grade 3, and the ITTF veterans' minimum

Width is checked the same way, less 5 ft and halved. An 11 ft (3.35 m) room leaves 3 ft (0.91 m) each side; 13 ft 1 in (4.0 m) leaves the Grade 1 4 ft 1 in (1.24 m).

Rooms built for other games land at the short end of this table. A room sized for a home 8 ft pool table, 13 ft 4 in x 17 ft (4.06 x 5.18 m) in how much room you need for a pool table, gives a ping pong table 4 ft (1.22 m) behind each end and 4 ft 2 in (1.27 m) at each side: wide enough for Grade 1, a foot short of casual at the ends. A home theatre built to the 1 : 1.4 : 1.9 ratio on a 9 ft ceiling, 12 ft 7 in x 17 ft 1 in (3.84 x 5.21 m) in home theatre room dimensions, gives 4 ft 1 in per end and 3 ft 9 in per side. Pool is sized by the cue across both axes; table tennis wants length, and a room that suits one is rarely long enough for the other.

3 m of clear height, and what an 8 ft ceiling leaves#

Every Table Tennis England grade from 1 to 3 asks for 3 m (9 ft 10 in) clear over the entire playing area, Grade 4 for 4 m (13 ft 1 in), and the ITTF 5 m (16 ft 5 in) for title events. Home Billiards gives the same 3 m (about 10 ft) for home rooms, which matches the grades.

CeilingAbove the playing surfaceAgainst the 3 m grades
8 ft (2.44 m)5 ft 6 in (1.68 m)22 in (56 cm) short

3 m (9 ft 10 in)7 ft 4 in (2.24 m)Grades 1 to 3
4 m (13 ft 1 in)10 ft 8 in (3.24 m)Grade 4

The playing surface is 76 cm (30 in) up, so the clear space above it is the ceiling less 2 ft 6 in. The standard says clear height over the entire playing area, so the lowest thing overhead sets it: a beam, a duct, a pendant, a garage door track. That is why the lighting below is flush or recessed. How ceiling height reads in a room more generally is in ceiling height and proportion.

The garage: a 24 ft double leaves 7 ft 2 in per end, door shut#

A garage is the usual home for a full-size table because it is the one room with the length. The working double garage on this site is 24 x 24 ft (7.3 x 7.3 m) nominal, about 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) inside, from garage sizes: single, double and triple. Empty, it gives a table 7 ft 2 in (2.19 m) behind each end and 9 ft 2 in (2.79 m) at each side: comfortably past casual, 1 ft 6 in short of Grade 1 at the ends and well over it at the sides. The old 20 x 20 ft double, 19 ft 4 in inside, gives 5 ft 2 in per end, the casual figure with 2 in to spare.

The door is the catch. An open sectional door parks under the ceiling over the front 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) of the bay, the backroom in garage door sizes and headroom, with its underside about 84 in (2.13 m) above the floor. That is 4 ft 6 in (1.37 m) above the playing surface, and a table run front to back puts one end of the play under it.

Run front to back and centred, a table in a 24 ft double garage has 7 ft 2 in (2.19 m) behind each end, but the front end of play falls under the open door, whose underside is 84 in (2.13 m) from the floor. Play with the door shut.

Run across the bay instead and the door zone still covers the table's front side. Either way the answer is to play with the door shut, and to check the lowest point of the opener rail and track over the table, since that is the clear height the room actually has.

With a car parked, the game moves into a strip. In a 20 ft (6.10 m) wide double the car and its door swing take 132 in (3.35 m) and leave about 10 ft (3.05 m), the strip garage gym layout builds a 10 x 12 ft training zone in. A table run along it, front to back, has 2 ft 6 in (0.76 m) each side, between the tightest 1 ft and the casual 3 ft, with the car as one side's obstruction, and the same end clearance as the empty garage. A triple garage is the only common garage long enough for a graded area: about 35 ft 4 in x 23 ft 4 in inside, played along its width, it takes Grade 3's 10 x 5 m (32 ft 10 in x 16 ft 5 in) on the floor, under the same 8 ft ceiling.

Lighting: 300 lux on the floor, 1,250 lumens on the table#

Table Tennis England asks for a maintained average of 300 lux over the whole playing area at Grade 1 and 500 lux at Grades 2 to 4, with Grade 5 at 1,500. The ITTF's own figures for title events are at least 1,500 lux, uniform, on the playing surface and 1,000 lux elsewhere in the playing area; other international events need 1,000 and 600.

Lux is lumens per square metre, so the targets convert directly. The table's 4.18 m² (45 sq ft) at 300 lux needs about 1,250 lumens landing on it, and 2,090 at 500 lux. The whole Grade 1 floor, 32 m², needs 9,600 lumens at 300 lux, before losses; fixtures must be rated well above that, by the method in how many lumens a room needs and the lumen calculator. The grade's lux is an average over the whole playing area, not the table, so light the floor the players stand on as well as the top.

The ITTF sets two more conditions that suit a home room. The background should be generally dark, without bright light sources or daylight through uncovered windows, and the hall's background lighting should be no brighter than the playing area. A garage window or a glazed door at one end, behind a player, is the home version of that problem; a blind fixes it. Where a screen shares the room, media room lighting sets the viewing levels.

What shifts the figure: walls, corners, the floor and folding away#

A wall along one side. Table Tennis England's widths are between surrounds, the low barriers round a playing area. Where a side abuts a wall or other solid obstruction, it adds a 1 m (3 ft 3 in) aisle between wall and surround, so a Grade 1 area against one wall needs 5 m (16 ft 5 in) of width, and between two walls 6 m (19 ft 8 in). At home the same aisle is the route past a game in progress; 36 in (91 cm) is the main-route width in walkway widths.

The corners. ITTF regulation 3.2.3.1 lets the four corners of the playing space be covered by surrounds no more than 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) long. If world title play can give up its corners, a home game can too: they are the place for a cabinet, a ball bucket or the folded table itself.

The floor. The ITTF asks for flooring that is not light coloured, brightly reflecting or slippery, and that is resilient. On a garage slab, rubber or interlocking tiles meet that, as in gym flooring thickness and tile sizes.

Folding away. A rollaway table folds its two halves upright on one frame. JOOLA's Rapid Play, a typical example, is 63.5 x 25 in (161 x 64 cm) on the floor and 62 in (157 cm) tall folded, and weighs 213 lb (97 kg). The width is the table's 60 in plus the frame, so no full-size rollaway folds narrower than 5 ft; only the depth varies. Killerspin's MyT 415X Mega weighs 258 lb (117 kg) and the Max 325 lb (147 kg), both on locking casters. In playback mode, one half folded up for solo practice, only the open end needs clearance.

Taping a layout before buying anything is covered in taping out a layout at full size, and the route a 213 lb folded table must roll along in the furniture delivery path method.

Frequently asked questions#

Can you fit a ping pong table in a 12 x 20 ft room?

For casual play, yes. A 9 x 5 ft table in a 20 ft (6.1 m) long room leaves 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) behind each end, half a foot more than the 19 ft casual figure, and 12 ft (3.66 m) of width leaves 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m) each side. It is short of Table Tennis England's recreational minimum of 8 x 4 m by 6 ft 3 in in length and 1 ft 1 in in width.

Is 10 ft enough behind a ping pong table?

Ten feet (3.05 m) behind each end is club standard. Table Tennis England's Grade 2, its recommended minimum for local league and club matches, works out at 10 ft 3 in (3.13 m) behind each end of a 9 x 5 ft table, and Grade 1 for recreational play at 8 ft 8 in (2.63 m). The casual 19 x 11 ft figure allows 5 ft (1.52 m).

How high should the ceiling be for table tennis?

Three metres (9 ft 10 in) clear over the entire playing area for recreational, club and regional play under Table Tennis England's grades, 4 m for national championships and 5 m for ITTF world title events. A standard 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling is 22 in (56 cm) short of the lowest grade and a 9 ft ceiling 10 in (25 cm) short, so pendant lights over the table are the first thing to remove.

Does a ping pong table fit in a two car garage?

An empty one, yes. The working double on this site is 24 x 24 ft (7.3 x 7.3 m) nominal, about 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) inside, which leaves 7 ft 2 in (2.19 m) behind each end of the table and 9 ft 2 in (2.79 m) each side. With one car parked, the free strip is about 10 ft (3.05 m) wide, enough to store a folded table but not to play.

How much space does a folded ping pong table take?

About 64 x 25 in (161 x 64 cm) of floor and 62 in (157 cm) of height for a JOOLA Rapid Play, a typical nested two-half table on casters. The folded width is the table's 60 in (152.5 cm) plus the frame, so every full-size rollaway is at least 5 ft wide folded; only the depth, 2 ft or so, varies much.

Is 19 x 11 ft the regulation room size for ping pong?

No. It is a retailer's figure for comfortable home play, built from 5 ft behind each end and 3 ft each side of a 9 x 5 ft table. No governing body publishes it. The ITTF's regulation playing space is 14 x 7 m for international events, and Table Tennis England's smallest graded area, for recreational play and coaching, is 8 x 4 m.

How much light does a ping pong table need?

Table Tennis England asks for 300 lux maintained average over the playing area for recreational play and 500 lux for club and league play. On the 4.18 m² (45 sq ft) of a 9 x 5 ft table, 300 lux is about 1,250 lumens landing on the surface. ITTF world title events need 1,500 lux on the table and 1,000 lux elsewhere in the playing area.
