Every art hanging guide gives you the centre line. Almost none of them tell you where to put the hook, which is the only measurement you actually mark on a wall.
Short answer
Centre the piece on 57 in (145 cm) from the floor on an open wall. Then hook height = centre + half the artwork's height, minus the wire drop when the wire is pulled taut. Over furniture, the 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) gap above the furniture takes priority.

Art hanging height calculator#
Returns the nail or hook height, not just the centre line, because the hanging wire pulls up when it takes the weight.

Why the hook is not the centre#
A framed picture does not hang from its centre. It hangs from a wire or a D ring some distance below the top edge, and when the wire takes the weight it pulls up into a shallow triangle. The distance from the top of the frame to the top of that taut wire is the drop, and it is typically 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) on a wire and under 1 in on a pair of D rings hung on two hooks.
So the arithmetic runs:
Hook height = desired centre + (artwork height / 2) - wire drop
A 30 in (76 cm) tall picture centred at 57 in with a 3 in drop puts the hook at 57 + 15 - 3 = 69 in (175 cm).
Measure the drop with the wire pulled up as it will be when hanging, not lying slack. A slack measurement is typically an inch out, and an inch is visible.

Two hooks rather than one is the small change that prevents the most annoyance: a picture on a single hook rotates every time a door slams.

Frequently asked questions#
How do I measure the wire drop?
Hook a finger under the hanging wire and pull it up as though the picture were on the wall, then measure from the top of the frame down to your finger. That is the drop. Measuring a slack wire gives a figure an inch or two too large, and the picture ends up that much too low.
Where exactly do I put the nail?
Hook height = 57 + (artwork height / 2) - wire drop. The wire drop is measured by hooking a finger under the wire and pulling it up as though it were hanging, then measuring from the top of the frame down to your finger. Skipping that step is why art ends up 2 to 3 in too low.
Why does the answer change when I say there is furniture below?
Because the eye reads the relationship between two adjacent objects before it reads the absolute height of one of them. When the gallery line and the furniture rule disagree by more than 4 in (10 cm), the calculator follows the furniture and tells you it has done so.
Does the 57 inch rule work with high ceilings?
It works to about 9 ft (2.7 m). Above that, raise the centre line to 60 to 64 in (152 to 163 cm) so the piece does not look stranded at the bottom of the wall, and consider a larger piece rather than a higher one. In a room used mainly seated, such as a snug, dropping to 54 in (137 cm) is defensible.
