Gallery wall layout calculator#
Enter the wall, the number of frames and the gap you want. The calculator returns the block size, the centre line, the first hook position and the spacing between frames.
The block is centred on 57 in (145 cm), the museum centre line, unless there is furniture below, in which case the bottom edge is set 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) above it instead.
Nothing you type leaves your browser: the maths runs on this page, and no values are stored or sent anywhere.
What the calculator returns#
Eight inputs: the wall width, the gap, the frame width and height, the number of frames across and down, the height of any furniture below, and the wire drop. From those it computes the block, positions it vertically, checks it against the wall and gives you the two marks you actually need: the first frame centre line measured from the left edge of the wall, and the hook height for the top row.
That is a deliberately small set of outputs, because a gallery wall only fails in two ways. Either the block is in the wrong place on the wall, or the frames are in the wrong place inside the block. Everything the calculator reports is aimed at one of those. Nothing you type leaves this page: the arithmetic runs in your browser and no values are stored or sent anywhere.

The arithmetic, worked once by hand#
Take a 96 in (244 cm) wall, six 16 x 20 in frames in three columns and two rows, a 3 in gap, a console 30 in (76 cm) high below, and a 2.5 in wire drop.
- Block width: three frames at 16 in plus two gaps at 3 in, so (3 x 16) + (2 x 3) = 54 in (137 cm).
- Block height: two frames at 20 in plus one gap, so (2 x 20) + 3 = 43 in (109 cm).
- Fit: 96 less 54 = 42, halved, so 21 in (53 cm) of clear wall each side.
- Bottom edge: the furniture at 30 in plus 7 in, so 37 in (94 cm).
- Top edge: 37 plus 43 = 80 in (203 cm).
- Block centre: 37 plus half of 43, so 58.5 in (149 cm), which lands close to the museum line by coincidence rather than by design.
- First frame centre line: 21 in of clear wall plus half a frame, so 29 in (74 cm) from the left edge, then every 19 in.
- Top row hook: the top edge less the wire drop, 80 less 2.5, so 77.5 in (197 cm).
- Second row hook: one row pitch lower, 20 plus 3, so 54.5 in (138 cm).
Nine numbers, two of which get marked on the wall. The rest exist so you can check the first two.
The centre line, and when furniture overrides it#
With nothing below the block, the calculator centres it on 57 in (145 cm). That figure is a convention rather than a code, taken from gallery hanging practice, and it works because it sits near the standing eye height of an adult of average stature. It is applied to the centre of the whole composition, which is the point most people miss: a two-row block centred on 57 in has its top frame well above eye level and its bottom frame well below, and that is correct.
With furniture below, the block stops taking its position from the room and takes it from the furniture. The calculator sets the bottom edge 7 in (18 cm) above the top of whatever you enter, the middle of the 6 to 8 in band. Under 6 in the block and the furniture read as one crowded object; over about 10 in they read as two unrelated things with a strip of wall between them. The same relationship governs a mirror over a console in entry console and mirror heights and a single picture in how high to hang art.
Two situations break the 57 in line honestly. A room where everybody is seated drops the eye line to roughly 44 to 48 in (112 to 122 cm), which is the reasoning in eye level and sightlines, seated and standing. And a wall with a picture rail hands the decision to the rail instead, covered in picture rail height and hanging from it.
Block sizes for common frames#
All at a 3 in (8 cm) gap. These are the blocks the standard framing sizes produce, which is worth knowing before you commit to a grid that will not fit the wall.

The gap is the variable to leave alone once you have chosen it, and the calculator says so on every result. If the block is too wide, it will offer you the gap that would make it fit, but shrinking a 3 in gap to 1.75 in to rescue a fourth column changes the character of the whole arrangement. Dropping the column is almost always the better move. The proportional reasoning behind that judgement is in scale and proportion: the rules that actually hold.
Where judgement beats the grid#
Three things the arithmetic cannot decide.
Whether the block belongs on that wall at all. A gallery wall wants a wall people see from a distance of at least the block width, which is why it works in a hall you walk down and struggles on a narrow return you only ever see edge on. The viewing distances involved are the same ones that set seating positions in living room seating layout.
The relationship to the furniture width. The calculator checks the block against the wall, not against the sofa or the console below, and a block wider than the piece it sits over always reads badly. Two thirds to the full width of the furniture is the working band, and the depths and lengths involved are in console table dimensions and placement heights.
Whether a grid is the right form. A single large piece often beats nine small ones on the same wall, and a mirror is a different problem again with its own sizing logic in mirror sizes and proportions by placement.
What the calculator does not do#
It handles one frame size in a regular grid. Mixed sizes and salon hangs need the block dimensions from here and then a floor layout inside a taped rectangle of the same size.
It does not know your wall. Studs, sockets, switch plates and a light fitting all constrain where a hook can go, and none of them are inputs.
It does not choose hardware or check weight. A frame over about 20 lb (9 kg) needs a fixing into something structural rather than a picture hook in plasterboard.
It does not size a single picture. These are planning tools: they get you to the right two marks on the wall, and the tape measure does the rest.
Frequently asked questions#
How high should a gallery wall be hung?
Centre the whole block on 57 in (145 cm), the museum line, when there is nothing underneath it. That is the centre of the composition, not the centre of any one frame, and it is the single most common thing people get wrong. Above a sofa or a console the block ignores the room and takes its position from the furniture instead, sitting 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) above the top.
What gap should I leave between frames?
Two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) for a grid of identical frames, and 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) when the sizes are mixed, because a larger gap absorbs the irregularity. What matters more than the figure is that it is identical everywhere. A grid with gaps varying by half an inch reads as a mistake even when nobody can say why.
How do I work out the hook height?
Take the top of the block, then subtract the wire drop. For a 43 in (109 cm) block whose top sits at 80 in (203 cm) and a wire that pulls 2.5 in (64 mm) below the frame top, the hook goes at 77.5 in (197 cm). Each row below is one row pitch lower, which is the frame height plus the gap. Never measure a hook from the centre line directly.
Should the gallery wall be as wide as the sofa?
Between about two thirds and the full width of the furniture below, and never wider than it. A 54 in (137 cm) block above an 84 in (213 cm) sofa is 64 per cent of the sofa width, which is at the lower end but works because the block is deep. If the block comes out wider than the furniture, drop a column rather than shrinking the gap.
What happens if my block is wider than the wall?
The calculator says so and tells you how far over you are, then offers the recovered gap: the spacing that would make the frames fit exactly, with a floor of 1.5 in (38 mm). Below that the frames start to read as one mass rather than a group, so the better answer is almost always to remove a column and keep the gap you wanted.
Does the 57 inch rule apply in every room?
No. Fifty seven inches approximates standing eye height, so it suits a hall or a room people walk through. In a room where everyone is seated, a dining room or a media room, the eye line drops to about 44 to 48 in (112 to 122 cm) and a block hung to the museum line will feel high. High ceilings do not change the line: art is hung to people, not to walls.
How do I hang frames of different sizes?
Set the outer rectangle first, then work inwards, keeping the gap constant and treating the block edges as the alignment you care about. The calculator handles a regular grid of one frame size, so for a mixed hang use it to fix the block dimensions and the centre line, then lay the frames out on the floor inside a taped rectangle of the same size.
How many frames should a gallery wall have?
An odd number reads as more informal, an even grid as more architectural, and neither is wrong. The practical limit is the wall: a three by two grid of 16 x 20 in frames needs 54 in (137 cm) of width and 43 in (109 cm) of height plus clear wall around it, so about 96 in (244 cm) of wall to look comfortable rather than crammed.
