Short answer

Work from height, not birthdays. Seat height lands at about 0.26 x stature and desk height at about 0.44 x stature, so a child of 50 in (128 cm) needs a seat at 14 in (35 cm) and a desk at 23 in (59 cm). Those are the BS EN 1729 school furniture sizes read as ratios. Too high a seat and the feet dangle; too low a desk and the neck takes the load instead of the forearms.

School furniture in Europe is not sized by age. It is sized by stature, in eight marks, each with a colour, and the whole of BS EN 1729 rests on two ratios that almost nobody writing about children's desks states out loud. Once you have them, you can size a desk and chair for any child in about fifteen seconds, and you can also see exactly why the familiar rules of thumb go wrong.

Where the numbers come from: two body dimensions#

Seat height is governed by popliteal height, the distance from the floor to the underside of the thigh at the back of the knee with the foot flat. Set the seat above that and the front edge presses into the underside of the thigh; set it below and the knees rise, which throws the weight onto the tailbone. Across the growth range, popliteal height plus a shoe allowance sits at close to 0.26 of stature.

Desk height is governed by seated elbow height, the height of the relaxed elbow above the floor when seated at the correct seat height. That is the level the forearms want, and it works out at about 0.44 of stature.

Subtract one from the other and you get the differential, the vertical distance from seat to work surface, which is 0.16 to 0.19 of stature. Everything on this page is those three numbers. The same logic drives adult figures in work surface heights by task, where the elbow is again the datum and the surface moves to meet it.

What exactly is being measured, and from where#

Three faces cause almost all the confusion.

  • Seat height is measured from the finished floor to the top of the compressed seat at its front edge, not to the uncompressed cushion and not to the seat pan at the back, which on a chair with a rearward tilt can be an inch lower.
  • Desk height is the finished floor to the top of the work surface. It is not the height of a keyboard tray, which sits 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) lower, and it is not the underside of the apron.
  • Knee clearance is floor to the underside of the desk, and it has to clear the seat top plus thigh thickness plus a little air. For a child on a 12 in (31 cm) seat that is about 12 + 4 + 1, so 17 in (43 cm) of clear height under the desk, which a deep drawer box will eat entirely.

Measure a floor with a carpet and rug on it and you have lost half an inch before you start; the same datum discipline as how to measure a room properly applies here on a smaller scale.

The size marks, in both units#

BS EN 1729 splits children into eight sizes by stature. This is the whole table, with the ratios worked out alongside so you can see how steady they are.

The ratios barely move across a range of stature that more than doubles. That is what makes the two multipliers safe to use on a child whose height falls between two marks, and it is why the practical instruction is: measure the child, apply 0.26 and 0.44, and buy the nearest size below.

The row that matters commercially is age twelve. A twelve year old needs a 71 cm desk, and the desks sold for bedrooms are built at 74 to 76 cm (29 to 30 in) because that is where adult furniture has settled, as desk dimensions and desk height and seated ergonomics both set out. A standard desk is genuinely correct from about 165 cm (65 in) of stature and no earlier, which is age thirteen or fourteen.

Testing the two-thirds rule#

The rule in circulation is that a chair seat should sit at roughly two thirds of the desk height. Divide column three by column four in the size table and the real ratio appears: 0.565 at size 1, 0.585 at size 2, 0.593 at size 3, 0.594 at size 4, 0.606 at size 5, 0.605 at size 6 and 0.622 at size 7. The average is 0.59, not 0.667.

The error is not academic. Two thirds of a 76 cm (30 in) desk gives a 51 cm seat, where the standard says 46 cm (18 in). That is 5 cm (2 in) of extra seat height, which on an adult chair is the difference between feet flat and feet swinging. The rule fails worst at the small end, which is where a child is least likely to report the problem.

The reason the ratio drifts upward with age is in the differential. Desk minus seat is 0.19 of stature at size 1 and 0.16 at size 7, because seated elbow height above the seat grows more slowly than the legs do. A constant ratio between two quantities that scale differently cannot be right at both ends, and 0.59 is simply the average of a moving target.

At a fixed adult desk the seat rises to hold the differential, and the footrest fills the gap that opens under the feet.

Fitting a child to a desk that will not move#

Most bedrooms have an adult desk in them, and the child arrives years early. The sequence is fixed and it is not the obvious one.

  1. The desk is at 74 cm (29 in) and cannot move. That sets the target.
  2. The correct differential for a 120 cm (47 in) child is 0.19 x 120, so about 23 cm (9 in).
  3. Seat height therefore has to be 74 minus 23, which is 51 cm (20 in).
  4. Their natural seat height is 0.26 x 120, or 31 cm (12 in).
  5. The feet are now 20 cm (8 in) off the floor, so the footrest goes at 20 cm, and it has to be at least 30 cm (12 in) deep front to back so the whole foot lands on it.
  6. Seat depth must come down to about 0.23 x stature, roughly 28 cm (11 in), or the front edge cuts across the calf.

Steps five and six are the ones that get skipped, and they are the ones that turn a raised seat from a fix into a different problem. A cushion on the seat raises the child but shortens the effective seat depth in the wrong direction and gives nothing to brace against.

Depth, screens and the surface itself#

Height scales with the child; depth does not. Desk depth is set by how far the eye needs to be from the work, and for a separate monitor that is roughly an arm's length, giving 28 to 30 in (71 to 76 cm) of depth for a mid-size screen. The full relationship between screen size and viewing distance is in monitor distance, height and position. For handwriting alone, 20 in (51 cm) of depth is enough, and a 24 in (61 cm) desk covers a laptop and a book side by side.

Width is set by the task rather than the body: 36 in (91 cm) takes a laptop and an open book, 48 in (122 cm) takes a screen with clear space to the side for paper. A sloped top of 10 to 15 degrees for writing, and up to 20 degrees for reading, is the oldest feature of a school desk and the first one modern domestic furniture dropped. A separate sloped board recovers most of the benefit without committing the desk to one use.

One number is specific to children: seat depth needs to suit the shortest user, since a seat that is too deep is used by perching on the front edge, which removes the backrest from the equation entirely.

How long a size lasts, and what to buy instead#

Growth of 2 to 2.5 in (5 to 6 cm) a year against EN size bands 13 to 16 cm wide means about two and a half years per size, so a fixed set bought at age five is wrong by age eight. Three practical options, in ascending cost:

  • A fixed chair matched to the current size, replaced twice. Cheapest per year if the chairs are passed down a family.
  • An adjustable chair, 30 to 46 cm (12 to 18 in) of seat height, plus a fixed desk at 64 cm (25 in), which is correct at age ten and workable from about age seven with a footrest.
  • A fully adjustable pair spanning 53 to 76 cm (21 to 30 in) of desk and 30 to 46 cm of seat, which covers age four to adult in one purchase provided the two adjust separately.

Frequently asked questions#

What height desk does a 6 year old need?

About 21 to 23 in (53 to 59 cm). A six year old is around 45 in (115 cm) tall, and desk height runs at roughly 0.44 x stature, which gives 20 in. BS EN 1729 brackets that stature between its size 2 desk at 53 cm and its size 3 desk at 59 cm. Pick the lower one if the chair cannot be raised, because a desk that is too high is the harder error to correct.

How do I work out chair height for a child?

Multiply their height by 0.26, or measure directly: sit them on a firm edge and measure from the floor to the back of the knee, then add about 1 in (25 mm) for a shoe. A 130 cm child gives 34 cm by measurement and 34 cm by the ratio. If the figure falls between two chairs, take the smaller one, since feet flat on the floor matters more than an inch of desk clearance.

Is the two-thirds rule for desk and chair height correct?

Not quite. Seat height is closer to 0.59 of desk height than 0.667. Applying two thirds to a 76 cm (30 in) desk gives a 51 cm seat where BS EN 1729 specifies 46 cm, an error of 5 cm (2 in) upward. The rule is closest for tall teenagers, at about 0.62, and worst for infants, at 0.565, so it errs most where the child is least able to say so.

What if a child uses an adult desk?

Raise the seat and add a footrest. At an adult 29 in (74 cm) desk, a 47 in (120 cm) child needs a seat at about 20 in (51 cm), which is 8 in (20 cm) above their natural 12 in (31 cm) seat height, so the footrest goes at 8 in and needs to be at least 12 in (30 cm) deep. A cushion alone makes it worse by shortening the effective seat depth.

When should a child move to a full-size desk?

At around 165 cm (65 in) of stature, usually age thirteen or fourteen. That is where 0.44 x stature reaches 73 cm, within an inch of the 74 to 76 cm (29 to 30 in) that desks are built at. Below that height a standard desk is too high, which is why school furniture keeps two smaller sizes in circulation right through secondary age.

How deep should a child's desk be?

Twenty four inches (61 cm) with a laptop, 28 to 30 in (71 to 76 cm) once a separate monitor arrives, because the screen has to sit at arm's length. For handwriting alone, 20 in (51 cm) is enough. Depth is set by the eye, not the elbow, so it does not scale down with the child the way seat and desk heights do.

Does a sloped desk top help?

For handwriting and reading, yes. A slope of 10 to 15 degrees for writing and up to 20 degrees for reading brings the work closer to perpendicular to the line of sight, which reduces how far the neck has to flex. It is the oldest feature of a school desk and the first one dropped from domestic furniture. A sloped board on a flat desk recovers most of it.

How long will one chair size last?

Two to three years. Children grow 2 to 2.5 in (5 to 6 cm) a year between four and ten, and the EN 1729 stature bands are 13 to 16 cm wide, so each size covers roughly two and a half years of growth. An adjustable chair spanning 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm) of seat height covers sizes 2 to 6, which is age four to adult.
