Short answer
A seat at 18.5 in (47 cm) suits a 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) adult: popliteal height, floor to the underside of the knee, runs at about a quarter of stature, and the calculator adds an inch for a shoe. It then stacks seated elbow height, 0.145 of stature, plus a task adjustment on top of the seat to give the work surface, and reports the knee space, the monitor height and the standing height that follow from the same figure.

Desk and chair height calculator#
Enter your height. The calculator derives seated elbow height, then the desk, chair, monitor and footrest heights that follow, for both a seated and a standing position.
Derived from proportional anthropometry: popliteal (under-knee) height is about 0.25 of stature, seated elbow height about 0.145 of stature above the seat, and one inch is added to the seat for a shoe. Use the result as a starting point and adjust by feel.

The two proportions it works from: 0.25 and 0.145 of stature#
It asks for four things: your stature, the main task, the monitor diagonal and whether you sit, stand or both. Everything else is derived. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, because the arithmetic runs in your browser on this page and no values are stored.
From stature it takes two proportions. Popliteal height, the floor to the underside of the knee, is about 0.25 of stature, and one inch is added to it for a shoe to give the seat height. Seated elbow height, from the seat top to the underside of a hanging forearm, is about 0.145 of stature, and that plus a task adjustment sits on the seat to give the working surface. Standing mode uses 0.62 of stature instead, which is the classic standing elbow height figure, and seated eye height comes out as the seat plus 0.44 of stature. The proportions are the ones in Panero and Zelnik and in Neufert, applied to your own number rather than to a fiftieth percentile stranger.
The calculator returns the seat, the surface, the clear knee height under the front edge, the monitor height and distance, the sit-stand travel, a footrest flag and a verdict on whether a standard desk will suit you. It does not return a chair model or a product. The related reasoning sits in desk height and seated ergonomics and in seat height, depth and angle.
A 5 ft 9 in adult: 18.5 in seat, 28.5 in desk, worked by hand#
Take a stature of 69 in (175 cm), keyboard and screen work, a 27 in monitor, seated.
- Popliteal height: 0.25 x 69 = 17.25, plus 1 in for a shoe, so the seat is 18.25, shown as 18.5 in (47 cm).
- Seated elbow allowance: 0.145 x 69 = 10.0, so 10 in (25 cm) above the seat.
- Task adjustment for a keyboard: 0.
- Working surface: 18.25 + 10 = 28.25, reported as 28.5 in (72 cm).
- Clear under the front edge: 28.25 minus 2.5 for the top and rail, so 26 in (66 cm).
- Seated eye height: 18.25 + (0.44 x 69) = 48.6, so 48.5 in (123 cm).
- Monitor distance: 1.4 x 27 = 38 in (97 cm).
- Standing, for comparison: 0.62 x 69 = 43 in (109 cm), and the sit-stand travel it asks for is 18.5 in (47 cm), the difference between the two positions plus 4 in of margin.

Both proportions scale with the same stature, so the derived surface is 0.395 of your height plus an inch. It crosses into the 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm) band a fixed desk is made at somewhere near 5 ft 11 in (180 cm) and leaves it again near 6 ft 1.5 in (186 cm). Below that window the manufactured top is too high and above it too low, and the size of that difference is what the chair, the footrest and the keyboard tray are for. Why 27.5 to 30.5 in is the verdict that says buy a normal desk#
The result panel decides between three verdicts on the derived desk height, and nothing else feeds that decision.

For keyboard work the middle verdict covers statures from about 5 ft 7 in (170 cm) to 6 ft 2.5 in (189 cm), which is why the tool tells most adults in that range simply to buy a normal desk. Below it the named chair height is 29 in minus your elbow allowance minus the task adjustment: 20 in (51 cm) at 5 ft 2 in (157 cm), against a derived seat of 16.5 in (42 cm). Three and a half inches of chair raise is a great deal, and it is why the footrest is not optional at that end. A close detail adjustment of 3 in pushes even a 5 ft 9 in adult into the top verdict, since 28.5 plus 3 is 31.5 in (80 cm).
One line prints whatever the verdict: if the desk cannot come down to the derived height, a keyboard tray set at that height does the same job as lowering the top. It is the cheapest fix on the page and the one most often skipped.
The task adjustment, and what rides on it#
The adjustment is added to the surface height only, never to the seat.

Detail work is the one that changes the answer materially. Three inches is the difference between a desk and a bench, and it is why jewellers, model makers and anyone soldering work at a surface that looks absurdly high until you sit at it. The same logic drives every other height in work surface heights by task, and it applies to a standing surface too: the adjustment is added there as well.
The monitor outputs follow the seat, not the surface. The top of the panel goes to seated eye height, and the distance is 1.4 times the diagonal, which is a deliberately conservative version of the bands in monitor distance, height and position.
Where 0.145 of stature stops being your number#
The derivation lands close to the published figure of 0.40 of stature for a seated work surface, about 27.5 in (70 cm) at 5 ft 9 in, which is reassuring but not the same as being right for you. Leg length varies against stature more than any other body segment, so two people of the same height do not necessarily want the same seat, and the elbow allowance shifts with shoulder height and how far forward you sit. Settle it with a tape on your own body: sit upright, feet flat, upper arms hanging, and measure from the seat to the underside of your forearm. That number is worth more than any proportion.
Where your own measurement and the proportion disagree, build to the lower figure. You can raise a keyboard, a monitor or a laptop on a stand for a few pounds. You cannot lower a fixed top without cutting the legs, and a top that is too high forces the shoulders up every hour of every day. This is the same asymmetry that governs standing desk heights and sit-stand ranges: buy the range, not the point.
Two other judgements sit outside the arithmetic. Chair adjustment ranges are finite, typically 16 to 21 in (41 to 53 cm) of seat height, so check yours against the derived seat, and against the raised seat the calculator names for a short user, using the figures in office chair dimensions and adjustment ranges. And children are not small adults in this respect: their proportions shift with age, which is why they get their own treatment in kids desk and chair heights by age.
What it cannot see: your chair, your floor, your room#
It does not know your chair. Seat pan depth, backrest angle and armrest height all change the working posture and none of them are inputs, so a seat height that is right on paper can still be wrong on a chair whose pan is 2 in too deep.
It does not know your floor. A thick rug, a chair mat or a raised platform all move the effective floor, and the seat height is measured from whatever your feet are actually on.
It does not lay out the room. Circulation behind a desk, the wall clearance for a chair to push back and the depth a desk needs against a window are all separate constraints, covered in home office layout and clearances.
It does not model percentiles. It applies proportions to the single stature you enter, which is more useful than a fiftieth percentile figure for one person and less useful for specifying furniture for many, where the percentile tables in anthropometric data for interior design do the job better.

Frequently asked questions#
What height should my desk be for my height?
Work from the seat, not the desk. Set the chair so your feet are flat and your thighs are level, which is about a quarter of your stature plus an inch for a shoe: 18.5 in (47 cm) at 5 ft 9 in (175 cm). Add seated elbow height, 0.145 of stature or 10 in (25 cm), and the work surface lands at 28.5 in (72 cm), a little under the 29 to 30 in a fixed desk is built at. Published guidance puts a seated work surface near 0.40 of stature, which agrees.
Why are all desks 29 or 30 inches high?
Because the office furniture trade standardised on a fixed top long before chairs were adjustable, and the height stuck. It suits a stature somewhere near 6 ft (183 cm) and it is too high for most adults below that, which is why the gas lift and the footrest exist. Nothing about 29 in (74 cm) is ergonomic. It is a manufacturing convention.
Does the calculator work for a standing desk?
Yes. Choose the standing or sit-stand mode and it returns 0.62 of your stature plus the task adjustment, which is 43 in (109 cm) at 5 ft 9 in (175 cm). In sit-stand mode it also reports the travel the mechanism needs to cover both positions, so you can check it against the range printed on a column's specification sheet before buying.
How far should a monitor be from my eyes?
The calculator uses 1.4 times the screen diagonal, so 38 in (97 cm) for a 27 in panel and 45 in (114 cm) for a 32 in one. It also puts the top of the panel at your seated eye height, which it derives as the seat height plus 0.44 of stature. Both figures assume a single screen square on to you rather than an angled pair.
What if the calculator gives a desk height lower than my desk?
That is the usual outcome under about 5 ft 7 in (170 cm), because fixed tops are built for a taller person. The calculator names the seat height that would put your elbow at a 29 in (74 cm) top and tells you to raise the chair to it rather than cut the legs down. Raise it, keep 7 to 8 in (18 to 20 cm) of thigh clearance under the apron, and add a footrest for whatever the floor lost.
Do I need a footrest?
You need one whenever the chair had to come up above your derived seat height to reach the desk, which for a fixed 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm) top is anyone under about 5 ft 11 in (180 cm). The calculator also flags one from the other direction, once the derived seat itself passes 19 in (48 cm), which happens just over 6 ft (183 cm). Height it at the difference between where the chair ended up and your derived seat.
How much knee space does a desk need?
At least 24 in (61 cm) wide, 15 in (38 cm) deep at knee level, and clear to within about 2.5 in (64 mm) of the desk top, which is the allowance the calculator makes for a top and a shallow rail. A drawer box under the top eats that budget immediately, which is why pedestal desks are the ones people find they cannot sit at properly.
Can two people share one desk height?
Only with a sit-stand column or two chairs and a footrest. Two adults 6 in (15 cm) apart in stature want seat heights 1.5 in (38 mm) apart and surface heights further apart than that. The cheaper fix is one desk height, two chairs set differently, and a footrest that stays under the desk for whoever needs it.
