A load of washing carries nearly four litres of water indoors, and it has to go somewhere.

Short answer
Allow 15 to 18 m (50 to 60 ft) of line per 7 to 8 kg (15 to 18 lb) wash load, which is one full winged floor airer or a three-tier tower. Towel-heavy loads need the upper end because a bath towel occupies 65 cm (26 in) of line on its own. Under 12 m (39 ft) garments touch, airflow stops and drying time roughly doubles.

Start with the load, not the rack#
Every airer in a shop is sold on its line length and nobody publishes what a load of washing needs, so the two numbers never get compared.
Build it from the items. A 7 to 8 kg (15 to 18 lb) machine takes roughly 30 mixed pieces: shirts, T-shirts, underwear, a pair of jeans, a few towels. Peg each one flat and the average occupies about 45 cm (18 in) of line, and the gap between neighbours adds 5 cm (2 in), so the mean claim is 50 cm (20 in) per item. Thirty items at 50 cm is 15 m (49 ft).
That is the mixed case. Change the contents and it moves sharply. A towel wash, twelve bath towels and four hand towels, is 12 x 65 cm plus 4 x 35 cm, which is 9.2 m (30 ft) for sixteen items. Bedding is worse per piece: a double sheet folded double over a line takes 110 cm (43 in) and a duvet cover 120 cm (47 in), so a bedding load of two sheets, two covers and four pillowcases is 5.6 m (18 ft) for eight pieces but occupies more depth than anything else because of the folded thickness.

The second column is the one that decides whether an airer fits under a ceiling, and it is the column nobody prints. Note that hanging a shirt on a hanger cuts its line claim from 40 cm to 25 cm but more than doubles its drop, which is the trade every drying arrangement makes: rail length against vertical space.

Two things fall out of the table. The first is that no single domestic airer holds a full load except the tower and the winged floor airer at the top of their range, which is why most households run two. The second is that the ceiling airers everyone wants for their tidiness carry the least line per unit of room they occupy.
The floor an airer actually claims#
A winged floor airer measures 180 x 55 cm (71 x 22 in), which is 0.99 m2 (10.7 sq ft) of footprint. That is not the floor it takes. You load it from both long sides, and reaching over a 95 cm (37 in) frame to peg the far line needs about 45 cm (18 in) of standing space each side. The real claim is 180 x 145 cm, which is 2.6 m2 (28 sq ft), roughly the floor area of a small shower tray.
The tower is better, because it is loaded from one side and reached around rather than over: 68 x 100 cm in use, or 0.68 m2 (7.3 sq ft). That advantage is the whole reason towers exist, and it comes at the cost of stacking wet items above wet items, which slows the lower tiers.
For a room that has to hold an airer permanently, add its in-use footprint to the aisle in front of the machines rather than overlapping the two. The way those areas add up is worked through in laundry room sizes and layouts, and the machine footprints they sit against in washer and dryer dimensions.
Ceiling airers and the headroom they need#
A ceiling airer is a frame of laths on a pulley, typically four to eight laths at 1.2 to 2.4 m (4 to 8 ft) long, spaced 100 to 125 mm (4 to 5 in) apart. Raised against the ceiling it is invisible. Loaded, it is a hazard, and the arithmetic is unforgiving.
Take a 2,400 mm (7 ft 10 in) ceiling. The frame hangs 250 to 300 mm (10 to 12 in) below it once the pulley blocks and the rise are allowed for, putting the laths at about 2,100 mm (83 in). Hang a double sheet folded double and it drops 1,000 mm (39 in), so the bottom of the washing is at 1,100 mm (43 in), which is waist height. Walking under it needs 2,030 mm (80 in) of clear headroom, the standard door head height that every other datum in a house lines up with, as ceiling heights and datum lines sets out.
For the laundry to clear that datum the laths would need to be at 2,030 plus 1,000, which is 3,030 mm (119 in): a 10 ft ceiling. Under a normal ceiling the conclusion is not that ceiling airers do not work, it is that they must hang over floor you do not walk on. Over a bath. Over a worktop. Over a stairwell, where thirteen risers at 190 mm give you 2,470 mm (97 in) of extra drop below the landing ceiling and a full-length sheet still clears the treads.
Spacing between lines, and why it decides drying time#
Drying is evaporation, and evaporation needs a vapour pressure difference and moving air across the wet surface. Two garments touching present one surface instead of two, and the air between them saturates and stops.
The spacing figure comes from the item, not the line. A bath towel folded over a line is 300 to 340 mm (12 to 13 in) thick across its hang. Two lines at 300 mm (12 in) centres therefore hold two towels with no gap at all. Four hundred millimetres (16 in) gives 60 to 100 mm (2.5 to 4 in) of air between them, which is the working figure.
- Parallel lines: 300 mm (12 in) minimum, 400 mm (16 in) for towels and bedding.
- Along a line: 50 mm (2 in) of clear air between items, which is where the 5 cm allowance in the load arithmetic comes from.
- Ceiling airer laths at 100 to 125 mm (4 to 5 in): these assume small items. Hang towels or bedding and you skip alternate laths, which is why the usable line on a six-lath airer is closer to 5.4 m (18 ft) than 10.8 m.
That last point is the reason ceiling airer capacity claims read so optimistically. The published figure is the sum of the laths; the usable figure for a bedding load is half of it.
Outdoors: fixed lines and rotary airers#
A rotary airer opens to 2.4 to 2.7 m (8 to 9 ft) across the arms and carries 40 to 60 m (130 to 200 ft) of line, which is three to four loads. Its ground claim is the swept circle, 5.3 m2 (57 sq ft) for a 2.6 m model, plus a walking ring around it, so allow a clear 3.6 m (12 ft) square. Set the socket at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from any wall or fence so the arms clear, and remember that the lowest line needs 400 mm (16 in) of ground clearance under load or long items drag. A fixed line spanning between two posts sags, and the sag is the number people forget. A 10 m (33 ft) span under a full load drops 200 to 300 mm (8 to 12 in) at mid span, so a line strung at 1,800 mm (71 in) at the posts sits at 1,500 to 1,600 mm (59 to 63 in) in the middle. That is still fine for shirts and wrong for a duvet cover, which is why long runs get a prop.
Heated airers, drying cabinets and radiator rails#
A heated airer draws 200 to 300 W and holds 15 to 20 m (50 to 66 ft) of rail in a 75 x 55 cm (30 x 22 in) footprint. It halves drying time and puts every gram of the 3.5 litres into the room, so it changes the schedule but not the ventilation requirement. Its cover, if it has one, is worth more than the heat: it traps the vapour where a dehumidifier or a fan can take it.
A drying cabinet is the enclosed version, typically 60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 in) on plan and 180 cm (71 in) tall, with 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft) of internal rail and its own vent. It occupies the footprint of a tall kitchen unit and drops straight into a run of cabinetry, and its hanging heights follow the same logic as hanging rod heights and capacity.
Radiator rails hold 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft) and are the least efficient option in the list, because the towel over the radiator blocks the convection the radiator was sized for. Clearances around a radiator are set out in radiator, vent and register clearances.

How many metres of washing line do I need for one load?
Fifteen to 18 m (50 to 60 ft) for a 7 to 8 kg (15 to 18 lb) load, which is about 30 mixed items at an average of 50 cm (20 in) of line each including the gap between them. A 9 kg (20 lb) machine pushes that to 20 m (66 ft). Towels are the outlier: a dozen bath towels alone occupy 8 m (26 ft).
How much space does a clothes airer need?
A winged floor airer measures 180 x 55 cm (71 x 22 in) open, but it needs access down both long sides to load, so the real floor claim is about 180 x 145 cm, or 2.6 m2 (28 sq ft). A three-tier tower takes 68 x 55 cm (27 x 22 in) of floor and needs access on one side only, roughly 1.2 m2 (13 sq ft) in use.
How far apart should washing lines be?

Can you hang a ceiling airer in a room with 2.4 m ceilings?
Only over something you do not walk under. A sheet folded double drops 1,000 mm (39 in) below the laths, and walking underneath needs 2,030 mm (80 in) of clear headroom, so the laths would have to sit at 3,030 mm (119 in). Over a 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in) ceiling the airer belongs over the bath, over a counter, or in a stairwell where the floor drops away.
How much water does drying laundry indoors put into a house?
Three and a half to 4 litres (about 1 US gallon) per load after a 1,400 rpm spin, because cotton holds roughly half its dry weight in water at that spin speed and more at 1,000 rpm. A 30 m3 room can only hold about 100 g of that in its air between 50 and 70 per cent relative humidity, so effectively all of it has to leave by ventilation.
Is a heated airer better than a tumble dryer?
It uses far less power, typically 200 to 300 W against 2,000 to 2,700 W for a vented dryer, but it releases every gram of water into the room rather than outside. A heated airer holds 15 to 20 m (50 to 66 ft) of rail in a footprint around 75 x 55 cm (30 x 22 in) and needs the same extraction as an unheated one. It is a drying method, not a dehumidifying one.
