The width is a module, the height is a worktop, and the depth on the spec sheet is a lie of omission.

Short answer

A US full-size washer or dryer is 27 in (69 cm) wide, 31 in (79 cm) deep and 38 in (97 cm) high; a European machine is 600 x 600 x 850 mm (23.6 x 23.6 x 33.5 in). Neither number is the one you build to. Add 2 in (5 cm) for the door and handle, 1 in (25 mm) of air each side, 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) behind for hoses and vent, and 23 in (58 cm) in front for the door to swing.

Two numbers govern every laundry appliance made: 27 in in North America and 600 mm in Europe. They are 685.8 mm and 600 mm respectively, which is to say they are 3.4 in apart, and everything else about the two machines follows from that gap. Neither number is arbitrary, and neither is the number you should be building to.

Where 27 inches and 600 millimetres come from#

Work outwards from the drum. A US front loader rated at 5.0 cu ft has a drum roughly 23 in (58 cm) in diameter and 21 in (53 cm) deep: pi times 11.5 squared times 21 is 8,724 cu in, which is 5.05 cu ft. Wrap that drum in an outer tub, a suspension and a steel cabinet, and each side takes about 2 in. 23 + 2 + 2 = 27.

The European figure is set from the outside in instead. A European kitchen carcass is 600 mm wide and its worktop sits at about 900 mm, made up of a 150 mm plinth, a 720 mm carcass and a 30 to 40 mm worktop. To slide under it, a machine has to be 850 mm high with feet that adjust to about 870 mm, and to sit in the run it has to be 600 mm wide. The drum is then whatever will fit: about 480 mm (18.9 in) in diameter, giving a 60 to 70 litre barrel. The full logic of that module is in millimetre cabinet and joinery sizes.

So the American machine is designed around its drum and the European machine is designed around its cupboard. That is why a US laundry is an alcove and a European laundry is usually a kitchen, and it is the root of every mismatch in appliance sizes by country.

What the specification sheet measures#

Manufacturer depth figures are quoted three ways and rarely labelled. You need to know which one you have been given:

  1. Cabinet depth. The steel box only, no door, no handle, no hoses. Typically 27 to 31 in (69 to 79 cm).
  2. Depth including door and handle. The number to plan a room from. Typically 31 to 34 in (79 to 86 cm).
  3. Depth with the door open. About 54 in (137 cm), and given on maybe half of specification sheets.

Height has the same problem in reverse: quoted heights are with the feet screwed fully in. The feet give another 1/2 to 1 in (13 to 25 mm) of adjustment, which you will use, because a laundry floor is rarely level and a front loader that is not level will walk across it. Plan to the taller figure.

Width is the only honest dimension on the sheet, and even there a handful of US dryers are 29 in (74 cm) rather than 27, which is enough to break a 60 in alcove holding a pair.

The top loader row is the interesting one. It is shallower than a front loader and needs no door swing, so it saves about 5 in (13 cm) of room depth, and it spends all of it upwards: the lid needs roughly 20 in (51 cm) of clear space to stand open, which puts the underside of any shelf at about 62 in (157 cm) above the floor. Choosing a top loader is choosing to give up the wall above the machines.

Do not convert 600 mm to 24 in and carry on. It is 23.62 in, and a 600 mm appliance dropped into a 24 in US opening leaves a 3/8 in (10 mm) gap on one side, while a 24 in US appliance will not go into a 600 mm European opening at all. That near-miss and its cousins are catalogued in imperial and metric: the dimension systems that collide in a house, and the interior unit converter will do the arithmetic without rounding it for you.

The slim-depth row deserves attention outside Europe. At 400 to 450 mm (16 to 18 in) deep it will sit in a cupboard barely deeper than a coat closet, and it is the only machine that fits a genuinely shallow laundry wall.

The standpipe has its own rule and it is a code matter, not a preference: US plumbing codes set the standpipe length between 18 and 42 in (46 to 107 cm) above the trap weir depending on which code your jurisdiction has adopted, with the trap itself 6 to 18 in (15 to 46 cm) above the floor. That puts the top of the standpipe somewhere between 24 and 48 in (61 and 122 cm), and it must be accessible, which is why it belongs in a recessed box rather than buried behind a machine you can no longer move.

The vent is the constraint that most often decides which wall the dryer goes on, because duct length is capped rather than merely inconvenient. Work it out from dryer venting dimensions and clearances before you commit. A ventless heat pump dryer removes the problem entirely at the cost of a condensate drain and a longer cycle.

Getting the machine into the house#

A washer weighs 150 to 250 lb (68 to 113 kg) and is carried, not wheeled, up the last flight. The dimensions that matter on the route are the clear width at the narrowest point, the diagonal at every turn and the headroom under a stair bulkhead. A 27 in machine wants about 30 in (76 cm) of clear width to be carried comfortably by two people, which a 32 in (81 cm) door leaf just about provides once you have subtracted the stop and the leaf itself, as interior door sizes and rough openings sets out. Removing the door from its hinges buys roughly 1.5 in (38 mm).

The turn is what actually stops deliveries. Use the diagonal method in will it fit? measuring the delivery path: at a 90 degree turn between a 36 in (91 cm) corridor and a 32 in (81 cm) door, the longest rigid object that can be swung through is set by the geometry of the corner, not by either width on its own.

The row that decides it for most small laundries is the counter one. The cost is a drum half the size, which is roughly twice as many cycles, and that is a real trade-off rather than a rounding error. Will a 27 inch washer fit through a 30 inch door?

Usually, but not always. A 30 in (76 cm) leaf gives about 28.5 in (72 cm) of clear width once the stop and the open leaf are subtracted, so a 27 in machine passes with 1.5 in to spare. Take the door off its hinges and you gain about 1.5 in more. The tighter constraint is normally the turn at the top of a staircase, not the door.

How tall is a stacked washer and dryer?

Two full-size US machines stack to 76 to 79 in (193 to 201 cm) including the stacking kit, and two 24 in compacts to about 67 to 70 in (170 to 178 cm). A purpose-built laundry centre is 74 to 76 in (188 to 193 cm). All of those put the dryer controls well above a comfortable reach, which is worked through separately.

Why are European washing machines smaller than American ones?

Because they are dimensioned to fit a 600 mm cabinet run and to slide under a 900 mm worktop, not to a free-standing alcove. The 850 mm height plus a 30 to 40 mm worktop lands just under 900 mm. The drum follows the box: a typical 9 kg European drum holds 60 to 70 litres against 120 to 140 litres in a US 4.5 to 5.0 cu ft machine.

Do washing machines need a gap on each side?

One inch (25 mm) each side is what most manufacturers ask for, and it is not about airflow. It is about levelling feet, about the machine walking under an unbalanced spin, and about being able to get a hand down the side to reach a hose. Two machines side by side therefore need 58 in (147 cm), which is why the standard alcove is 60 in (152 cm).

How deep is a washer with the door open?

About 54 in (137 cm) from the wall: 31 in (79 cm) of machine plus roughly 23 in (58 cm) of door projecting at 90 degrees. Some doors open to 155 or 180 degrees and swing clear of the aisle entirely, which is worth checking in the showroom because it is rarely on the specification sheet.
