Short answer

A single row of machines needs 80 in (203 cm) from wall to wall: 31 in of machine body, 2 in of door and handle, 5 in behind for hoses and a vent elbow, and a 42 in (107 cm) aisle. Recess the services and it drops to 76 in (193 cm). A 6 x 8 ft (1.8 x 2.4 m) room is the point at which folding fits too, and 8 x 10 ft (2.4 x 3.0 m) is where drying and sorting stop competing for the same floor.

Every other appliance in a house is used standing still. A laundry is used walking: you arrive with a basket, you crouch, you turn, you carry a wet load three feet sideways, and you do all of it with a machine door hanging open in the middle of the floor. That is why laundry rooms with generous floor area still feel unusable, and why the number that decides the room is not the area at all. It is the depth, measured through the machine.

The depth stack, from the finished wall to the front of the door#

Start at the wall, and be specific about which wall face. Appliance depth is quoted by manufacturers from the back of the cabinet to the front of the door, and the number you need is measured from finished wall surface to finished wall surface, plasterboard face to plasterboard face, the way how to measure a room properly sets out. Add nothing for studs and subtract nothing for skirting: skirting is the thing that actually stops the machine going all the way back, and it is usually 5/8 to 3/4 in (16 to 19 mm) thick.

Two of those five lines are negotiable. A recessed washing machine outlet box sets the taps and standpipe into the stud bay, and a periscope vent fitting turns the 4 in (100 mm) duct through 90 degrees inside about 1 in (25 mm) rather than the 5 in a rigid elbow needs. Together they take the services line from 5 in to roughly 1 in and bring the room to 76 in (193 cm). Four inches sounds trivial until you are drawing a 6 ft 4 in room instead of a 6 ft 8 in one.

Width: why 60 in is the number for a pair#

A US washer and a US dryer are both 27 in (69 cm) wide, and every install manual asks for about 1 in (25 mm) of air on each side, partly for levelling and partly because a spinning drum walks. Two machines, four 1 in gaps: 27 + 27 + 4 = 58 in (147 cm). Round to 60 in (152 cm) and you have the standard alcove width, with 1 in of slop at each end for a wall that is not plumb, which is most walls. European machines are 600 mm (23.6 in) wide, so a European pair is 1,200 mm plus gaps, about 1,260 mm (49.6 in). That 10 in difference across a pair is the single biggest reason a US laundry plan does not transfer, and the rest of the mismatch is set out in appliance sizes by country. Stack them instead and the width collapses to 30 in (76 cm), which is the whole argument for a stacked washer and dryer.

The galley is the layout most people should choose and few do, because the extra 20 in (51 cm) of depth looks like waste on a plan and is not. It is the only one of the four in which you stand facing the counter with the machine door open behind you, rather than passing the open door on your way anywhere. The same logic that governs galley and one-wall kitchen widths applies here with one change: a laundry counter opposite the machines can be 24 to 25 in (61 to 64 cm) deep rather than a kitchen's full run, because nothing is plumbed into it except, sometimes, a sink.

No code in the US or the UK sets a minimum laundry room area. The IRC governs the dryer duct, the receptacle, the ventilation and, in some jurisdictions, the drain pan, and it says nothing about the floor plan. The room sizes above are trade practice and our own working figures, not law, which is worth knowing when a builder tells you a 30 in deep closet is "to code". Where the legal minimums do bite, for habitable rooms rather than utility spaces, they are collected in standard and minimum room sizes.

What changes the number#

Stacking. A stacked pair is 30 in (76 cm) wide and 76 to 79 in (193 to 201 cm) tall, so the room width halves and the room depth stays exactly the same, because depth is set by one machine either way. Stacking buys width, never depth.

Top loaders. A top loading washer is shallower, typically 27 to 28 in (69 to 71 cm) with no door projection, so the depth stack falls to about 74 in (188 cm) wall to wall. It costs you the thing above it: the lid needs roughly 20 in (51 cm) of clear height to stand open, which puts the underside of any shelf or cabinet at about 62 in (157 cm) above the floor, not the 54 in (137 cm) you would use over a front loader.

Upstairs. A first floor laundry usually means a drain pan, which adds 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) under the machines, and an acoustic mat, which adds another 1/4 to 1/2 in (6 to 13 mm). Both change the height of anything sitting on top and are easy to forget until the counter is templated. The knock-on for door undercuts and appliance openings is the same one described in floor height changes, doors and appliances.

Accessibility. A wheelchair-accessible laundry needs a 30 x 48 in (76 x 122 cm) clear floor space at each machine with a forward or parallel approach, plus a 60 in (152 cm) turning circle somewhere in the room. Combine them and the room grows to roughly 96 x 96 in (244 x 244 cm), because the turning circle cannot sit inside the door swing or under the machines. The geometry is worked through in wheelchair turning and manoeuvring space.

Vent runs. The wall the dryer sits against decides how far the duct has to travel, and duct length is capped, not merely inconvenient. Choose the machine wall against the vent path, not only against the plumbing, and check the arithmetic in dryer venting dimensions and clearances.

The door into the room#

A 32 in (81 cm) leaf swinging into a laundry sweeps a quadrant of about 7 sq ft (0.65 m2). In an 80 sq ft utility that is a rounding error; in a 33 sq ft minimum room it is a fifth of the floor, and it is always the fifth nearest the machines, because that is where the door is. In order of how much floor they return:

  1. Outward swing. Costs nothing, returns everything, and needs a corridor that can absorb it.
  2. Pocket door. Returns the whole quadrant but needs a clear stud bay of twice the leaf width plus the cassette, as set out in pocket and sliding door dimensions.
  3. Bifold. Returns roughly three quarters of the quadrant and projects about half the panel width when folded.
  4. Inward swing, hinged into the corner furthest from the machines. Free, and better than nothing.

One rule overrides all four: the door leaf must be wider than the machine. A 27 in machine will not pass through a 28 in (711 mm) rough opening once a 30 in door is hung in it, because the clear width of a 30 in leaf is about 28.5 in (72 cm) after the stop and the open leaf itself. Get the full arithmetic from interior door sizes and rough openings before the framing goes up.

Lighting, services and the things that are not floor area#

A laundry is a task room and the usual domestic 100 to 150 lux is not enough at the folding surface. Aim for 300 lux general and 500 lux (about 50 foot-candles) on the counter, which is the IES range for a task of this kind, and put the light in front of you rather than behind: a ceiling fitting directly overhead puts your own shadow on the thing you are sorting. The services that need a position on the plan, not just a note: a 4 in (100 mm) dryer duct, a standpipe at 18 to 30 in (46 to 76 cm) above the floor, a dedicated 20 A receptacle for the washer, a 240 V outlet or gas connection for the dryer, and a utility sink if there is one, which needs its own 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) of run and is sized in utility sink dimensions and clearances. Frequently asked questions#

What is the minimum size for a laundry room?

About 60 x 80 in (152 x 203 cm), or 33 sq ft (3.1 m2), for a side-by-side pair with a usable aisle. No US or UK code sets a minimum laundry room area: the IRC governs the dryer duct, the receptacle and the ventilation, not the floor plan. Anything smaller than that is a laundry closet, which is a different problem with different door rules.

How much space do you need in front of a washer and dryer?

The NKBA planning guidance is 42 in (107 cm) of clear floor space in front of a laundry appliance, and ADA-derived practice asks for a 30 x 48 in (76 x 122 cm) clear floor space at each machine. Our own recommendation is 48 in (122 cm) in front of a front loader, because the machine door projects 23 in (58 cm) into that aisle for the whole time the room is in use.

How deep does a laundry room need to be?

Eighty inches (203 cm) wall to wall for one row of machines. Is a galley laundry room better than a single wall?

A galley gives you a counter without stealing wall length from the machines, but it costs 100 in (254 cm) wall to wall against 80 in (203 cm) for a single wall. The counter opposite the machines is 25 in (64 cm) deep, and you stand in the aisle between them, which is the one arrangement where the open machine door lands behind you rather than across your route.

Can a laundry room be 5 ft wide?

Yes, if 5 ft is the width rather than the depth. Sixty inches (152 cm) holds a side-by-side pair with 1 in (25 mm) of air each side and at each end, which is what manufacturers ask for. What 5 ft cannot do is serve as the depth: 60 in leaves a 22 in (56 cm) aisle in front of the machines, and the open door alone is 23 in (58 cm).

Where should the laundry room door go?

On the wall the machines are not on, opening away from the aisle. A 32 in (81 cm) door swinging into a laundry sterilises about 7 sq ft (0.65 m2) of corner, which in a 33 sq ft room is a fifth of it. A pocket door or an outward swing recovers that floor, and a bifold recovers most of it.

How much floor area should a laundry room have?

Thirty-three square feet (3.1 m2) is the working minimum, 48 sq ft (4.5 m2) buys a folding counter, and 80 sq ft (7.4 m2) lets drying, sorting and ironing coexist without moving anything. Area alone is a poor test: a 40 sq ft room that is 5 ft deep cannot take a front loader at all, while a 33 sq ft room that is 6 ft 8 in deep works.

Does a laundry room need a floor drain?

Not by the IRC in most jurisdictions, though local amendments and any laundry above a habitable room often require either a drain or a drain pan piped to a safe outlet. A pan adds 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) to the machine height, which changes the counter arithmetic above it, so decide on it before the cabinetry is drawn.
