How high should a washer standpipe be?

The plumbing code measures a standpipe from its trap, and the washer makers measure it from the floor.

Short answer

39 in (99 cm) from the floor to the top of the pipe for a full-size US washer. That meets the strictest maker minimum in 12 maker documents (Maytag and Samsung) and both model codes, provided the trap weir sits 9 to 18 in (23 to 46 cm) up. The code's 18 in (46 cm) is measured from the trap weir, so a code-minimum pipe can top out at 24 in (61 cm), below five makers' minimums. A Bosch compact or a Beko wants the drain no higher than 100 cm (39 in).

The top of a washer standpipe should stand 39 in (99 cm) above the floor for a full-size US machine. That is the strictest minimum in 12 maker documents, set by Maytag's installation instructions and Samsung's installation guidance, and it sits inside both model plumbing codes as long as the trap is in the right place. The figure that circulates instead, 18 in (46 cm), is real but is measured from somewhere else: the trap weir, not the floor.

Two datums: the trap weir and the floor#

A standpipe is the open vertical pipe the washer's hose hangs into. Below it is a trap, the U-bend that holds water to keep sewer gas out, and then the drain. Two different points are used to measure its height, and almost every disagreement about standpipes comes from mixing them up.

The trap weir is the point where water leaves the trap: the top of the water it holds. The IRC measures a trap's seal from the crown weir down to the top of the dip, so the weir is the trap's water line, a few inches above the bottom of the bend. All three model codes measure the standpipe from here.

The floor is where the washer makers measure from, or from the bottom of the washer, which is the same thing until the machine goes on a pedestal. Maytag says the top of the standpipe "must be at least 39 in (991 mm) high". Whirlpool's help page says to measure "from the floor". Electrolux and Frigidaire say "above floor". LG and GE say above the bottom or base of the washer.

The distance between the two datums is the height of the trap, and that is the number nobody prints on a drawing. The glossary keeps the terms apart, and the services wall as a whole is drawn in washer and dryer dimensions.

The code numbers: 18 to 42 in under the IRC, 18 to 30 in under the UPC#

Three model codes cover US houses, and they agree on the minimum and disagree on the maximum.

CodeStandpipe above the trap weirTrap above the floorWith a laundry tray connected

IPC 2021, 802.4.318 to 42 in (46 to 107 cm)Not set; individually trapped, access for rodding30 in (76 cm) minimum, and above the tray's flood rim
UPC 2021, 804.118 to 30 in (46 to 76 cm)6 to 18 in (15 to 46 cm), never below the floor30 in (76 cm) minimum, and above the tray's flood rim (804.1.1)

The IRC text quoted here is the 2021 edition as Colorado adopted it; the 2024 wording of P2706.1.2 is identical. The UPC text is the 2021 edition as adopted in Hawaii's plumbing code, with 804.1.1 read in Hawaii's 2018 edition. Which code applies depends on where the house is, and some states amend them, which the regional standards section deals with in general.

Only the UPC pins the trap to the floor, so only the UPC turns into a floor figure directly. Its trap at 6 to 18 in plus its pipe of 18 to 30 in puts the top of the standpipe 24 to 48 in (61 to 122 cm) above the floor. The IRC sets no trap height, so its 18 to 42 in floats with wherever the plumber put the trap. That is why floor ranges quoted for the same pipe vary so widely: each is one trap height away from another.

The IRC also requires the washer to discharge through an air break (P2718.1), which is why every maker below forbids sealing the hose into the pipe. And it sizes the trap of a clothes washer standpipe at 2 in (51 mm) in Table P3201.7, larger than the 1 1/2 in trap under a laundry tub.

What 12 maker documents ask for#

The makers publish a minimum and a maximum for the end of the drain hose, which in a standpipe installation is the top of the pipe. Twelve documents from ten brands:

Maytag top-load, installation instructions (MVWX5)39 in (99 cm)96 in (2.44 m)Floor; bottom of washer for the maximum

Two things stand out. Samsung's own pages disagree with each other: the installation guidance says 39 in, the troubleshooting page 18 in. The 39 in page is the one that explains what happens below it, so it is the one to build to. And the maximums divide in two. Every US maker that states one gives 96 in (GE writes 8 ft), and Maytag sends anything taller to a sump pump. Bosch's 24 in compact and Beko's UK machines, both written to a round 100 cm, stop at 39.4 in. The imperial versus metric page explains why a rounded 39 in and a rounded 100 cm are not quite the same line, and the unit converter turns the rest.

Why the makers' minimum sits at 29 to 39 in#

The makers' minimum protects the machine, not the drain. A washer's tub holds water above the floor while it fills and washes. If the end of the hose is lower than the water in the tub, the water runs out through the hose under gravity, and once the hose is full it keeps pulling as a siphon.

Whirlpool's help page puts it directly: if the drain is below 30 in (76 cm), "the water will start to flow out of the machine due to gravity" and the flow "can create suction (siphon)". Samsung's installation page says that below 39 in water may drain during the cycle through siphoning and the machine shows a 4C error code. GE's commercial washer instructions supply an anti-siphon clip for any drain under their 30 in minimum.

The code's minimum is a rule about the plumbing, measured from the trap, and nothing in the code text ties it to the machine that drains into it. There is no reason the two numbers should match, and they do not.

39 in, and where the trap has to sit to allow it#

Work backwards from the 39 in top, taking the trap height as the weir height (the weir is a little above the bottom of the trap, so a real installation has a small margin in hand).

CodePipe above the weirWeir above the floor for a 39 in top
IRC or IPC18 to 42 in (46 to 107 cm)21 in (53 cm) or lower
UPC18 to 30 in (46 to 76 cm)9 to 21 in, and the trap may not exceed 18 in: so 9 to 18 in (23 to 46 cm)

A weir 12 in (30 cm) above the floor satisfies both: 39 - 12 = 27 in of pipe, inside 18 to 30 and 18 to 42. That is the figure drawn below, and the site's recommendation for a new wall.

Behind it a vertical standpipe rises from a trap whose weir is 12 inches above the floor to an open top 39 inches above the floor, giving 27 inches of pipe above the weir.Washer31 in deep27 in (69 cm)39 in (99 cm)12 inTrap, weirOpen topSide elevation. Weir drawn at the trap's water line; floor at the bottom edge.
The two datums on one wall: the code counts the 27 in above the weir, the washer makers count the 39 in above the floor. A 12 in weir keeps both inside every rule in this article.

The trap goes in the wall cavity, usually inside a recessed washing machine outlet box, and the IRC requires waste receptors to be readily accessible and not concealed. How the box and the duct share the back wall is set out in laundry closet dimensions, and where the rest of the services land on the plan in laundry room sizes and layouts.

The upper limits: 42 in, 30 in, 96 in and 100 cm#

The code caps the pipe, not the pump. The US makers allow 96 in (2.44 m), and Electrolux's 59 in hose reaches a 79 in standpipe out of the box (Frigidaire's 52 in hose, 74 in). Maytag sends anything taller than 96 in to a sump pump. But in a house the binding limit is 42 in above the weir (IRC) or 30 in (UPC). With a 12 in weir that is 54 in or 42 in from the floor.

Bosch compacts and Beko machines want it lower. Bosch's 24 in compact allows 39 in (100 cm) between the floor and the drainage point, and Beko 100 cm to the highest point of the hose, which sits above the top of the pipe where the hose bends over into it. So for those machines the 39 in recommendation is the ceiling, not the target. A pipe top at 36 in (91 cm), Speed Queen's recommended height, leaves room for the bend under Beko's 100 cm and still clears every US minimum except Maytag's and Samsung's 39 in. A 24 in compact stacked on a dryer has its own drain routing, covered in stacked washer and dryer dimensions.

A pedestal moves the datum for some makers. LG and GE measure from the bottom or base of the washer, not the floor. On a pedestal, read literally, the minimum rises by the pedestal height: LG's 29 in becomes 44.5 in (113 cm) above the floor on a 15.5 in (39 cm) pedestal, beyond what a UPC pipe can reach with a trap below 14.5 in. Whirlpool, Samsung and Electrolux measure from the floor and are not affected.

A laundry tub on the same pipe raises the minimum. Under the IRC and IPC a laundry tray may drain into the washer's standpipe, but the pipe must then rise at least 30 in above its weir and above the tray's flood rim, and the tray outlet must be within 30 in horizontally of the standpipe trap. With a 12 in weir the top lands at 42 to 54 in (107 to 137 cm), comfortably above the 36 in (91 cm) rim recommended in utility sink dimensions.

Hose depth, pipe size and the air gap#

The second half of a siphon is a hose pushed too deep or sealed in. Every maker here forbids an airtight joint, and their depth limits differ by nearly a factor of two.

MakerHose inside the standpipePipe size they accept
Maytag top-load4.5 in (114 mm) maximum2 in (51 mm) minimum, 17 gal (64 L) a minute
Whirlpool front-load4.5 in (113 mm) maximumNot stated on the help page
GE Profile top-load5 in (13 cm) maximum1 1/2 in (38 mm) inside diameter minimum

Beko UK15 cm (6 in) maximumNot stated
Electrolux, FrigidaireNot stated1 1/4 in (32 mm) minimum, 17 gal (64 L) a minute

Samsung's 6 in minimum and Maytag's 4.5 in maximum do not overlap, so this is a figure to take from the machine's own instructions, not from a general rule. LG and Bosch both clip the hose into an elbow about 4 in (10 cm) from its end, which sets the depth for you. Run a standpipe at 2 in regardless: it is the IRC trap size and the largest minimum any maker states.

Where these figures stop applying#

A floor drain or a laundry tub alone. With no standpipe, the hose hangs over the tub rim or runs to a floor drain. Samsung puts a basin at 24 to 35 in (61 to 89 cm) from the floor, and Maytag requires a siphon break kit for a floor drain.

Outside the US. The three codes here are American. Beko's 40 to 100 cm and Bosch's 100 cm travel with the machine, but the trap and pipe rules are local. A washer under a kitchen worktop is planned with the rest of the kitchen appliance clearances.

A washer in a bathroom. The UPC allows a standpipe in a toilet or bathroom where the washer is installed in the same room, which matters in the plans in small bathroom layouts.

The documents. These are 12 maker documents read in October 2026, not every model each brand sells, and instructions change between generations. The machine's own installation manual overrides the table. Miele's documents could not be read and are not included.

The rest of the room, from the dryer duct in dryer venting dimensions to the shelf over the machine in laundry shelving and cabinet heights and the laundry counter and folding height, sits under laundry room dimensions. Sources follow the site's standards, codes and sources policy.

Six checks for a washer standpipe#

Frequently asked questions#

How high should a washing machine standpipe be?

Put the top 39 in (99 cm) above the floor for a full-size US washer. Maytag's installation instructions and Samsung's installation guidance both set 39 in as the minimum, and every US maker that states a maximum allows 96 in (2.44 m). To keep the pipe inside the code, the trap weir then has to sit no higher than 21 in (53 cm), and under the UPC no lower than 9 in (23 cm).

Is the 18 inch standpipe height measured from the floor?

No. The IRC, IPC and UPC all measure the 18 in (46 cm) minimum from the trap weir, the level at which water leaves the trap. With the trap at the UPC's lowest permitted 6 in (15 cm), an 18 in pipe tops out at 24 in (61 cm) above the floor, which meets Electrolux's and Frigidaire's minimum but is 5 to 15 in short of LG, GE, Whirlpool, Maytag and Samsung.

What is the maximum height for a washer standpipe?

42 in (107 cm) above the trap weir under the IRC and IPC, 30 in (76 cm) under the UPC. The US washer makers allow far more, 96 in (2.44 m) above the base of the machine, and Maytag sends anything taller to a sump pump. So in a house it is the code, not the machine, that caps the pipe. Bosch's 24 in compact and Beko's machines are the exceptions, at 100 cm (39 in).

How far should the drain hose go into the standpipe?

It depends on the brand, and the figures do not agree. Maytag and Whirlpool say no more than 4.5 in (114 mm), GE no more than 5 in (13 cm), LG no more than 8 in (20 cm), Samsung at least 6 and no more than 8 in, Beko no more than 15 cm (6 in). Every one says the joint must not be airtight: tape or a tight fit lets the pipe siphon the drum.

What size should a washer standpipe be?

Two inches (51 mm). The IRC sizes a clothes washer standpipe trap at 2 in in Table P3201.7, and Maytag's instructions set a 2 in minimum pipe with a carry-away of 17 gal (64 L) a minute. GE's instructions accept 1 1/2 in (38 mm) inside diameter and Electrolux's 1 1/4 in (32 mm), but those are what the machine tolerates, not what the code requires for the trap.

Can a laundry sink drain into the washer standpipe?

Yes, under the IRC and IPC, with a taller pipe. The standpipe must then rise at least 30 in (76 cm) above its trap weir and above the flood rim of the sink, and the sink's outlet can be no more than 30 in (76 cm) horizontally from the standpipe trap. With the weir at 12 in (30 cm) that puts the top 42 to 54 in (107 to 137 cm) up.

Why does my washer drain while it is filling?

Usually because the drain is siphoning: the hose end sits too low or too deep, or the joint is sealed. Whirlpool's help page says that below 30 in (76 cm) from the floor water starts to flow out of a front-loader by gravity and the flow sets up a siphon. Samsung's gives 39 in (99 cm) as the threshold, with a 4C error code as the symptom. Raise the hose end and loosen the joint.

Does a washer standpipe need a trap?

Yes. The IPC says standpipes shall be individually trapped, and the IRC sizes that trap at 2 in (51 mm). The UPC adds that the trap may not be installed below the floor and must be roughed in 6 to 18 in (15 to 46 cm) above it. The washer hose itself must discharge through an air break, IRC P2718.1, which is why it hangs loose in the pipe rather than being sealed into it.
