Short answer
A 24 3/4 in (63 cm) seat, the median of 33 fixed counter stools from four makers; 27 of them fall between 24 and 26 in (61 to 66 cm). That leaves 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) from seat to worktop. Below 10 in, a large thigh meets the underside of a 1 1/2 in top. Above 12 in, the counter rises past the 95th-percentile seated elbow. A 42 in (107 cm) bar takes a 30 to 31 in (76 to 79 cm) stool.

A 36 in (91 cm) kitchen counter takes a stool with a 24 3/4 in (63 cm) seat. That is the median of 33 fixed-height counter stools listed by IKEA, Poly & Bark, Blu Dot and Audo, and 27 of the 33 sit between 24 and 26 in (61 and 66 cm). The usual 24 to 26 in band is right, and it ends where it does because at 26 in a large thigh is a fraction of an inch from the underside of the worktop. A 42 in (107 cm) bar takes a 30 to 31 in (76 to 79 cm) stool, slightly taller than the bar stools on sale, which are cut for 41 3/8 in tables.
Seat height is taken at the top of the seat, the counter at the top of the worktop#
Seat height is the top of the seat, measured from the finished floor. Makers rarely say where on the seat; Poly & Bark's Ligna listing gives 25 in "(middle of the seat)", which matters on a dished seat. A padded seat sinks when sat on, so it works slightly lower than listed.
Counter height is the top of the worktop, but the body cares about the underside: the counter height less the worktop's thickness. IKEA's US countertops are 1 1/8 in (29 mm) for EKBACKEN laminate and 1 1/2 in (38 mm) for KARLBY and SÄLJAN, so a 36 in counter has its underside at 34 1/2 to 34 7/8 in.
The gap here is seat to worktop top: 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm), the same differential as an 18 in chair at a 30 in table in dining chair dimensions. Taken to the underside instead, the same stools leave 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 in less. How we measure sets out the floor-to-surface convention, and the glossary defines the terms.
33 counter stools, sorted by seat height#
Every fixed-height counter stool whose listing gives a seat height, from IKEA US, Poly & Bark, Blu Dot and Audo, read in October 2026, colourways counted once. Audo's centimetres are converted.
| Seat height | cm | Stools | Count | Gap at a 36 in counter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23 1/2 in | 60 | Poly & Bark Hamm, Weave, Enzo, Faro | 4 | 12 1/2 in (32 cm) |
| 24 in | 61 | Poly & Bark Paxton, Yokohama, Talia, Boswin; Blu Dot Clean Cut swivel | 5 | 12 in (30 cm) |
| 24 3/8 in | 62 | IKEA BERGMUND, NORDVIKEN, RÄVSTEN, SKOGSTA | 4 | 11 5/8 in (30 cm) |
| 24 3/4 in | 63 | IKEA FRANKLIN, ROSENTORP, STIG, HÄGERNÄS | 4 | 11 1/4 in (29 cm) |
| 25 in | 64 | Poly & Bark Banda, Isla, Ligna; Blu Dot Chip, Racer, Ready | 6 | 11 in (28 cm) |
| 25 1/4 in | 64 | IKEA GRÖNSTA | 1 | 10 3/4 in (27 cm) |
| 25 1/2 in | 65 | Poly & Bark Lev | 1 | 10 1/2 in (27 cm) |

| 27 1/4 in | 69 | Audo ML42 counter stool | 1 | 8 3/4 in (22 cm) |
The median, the 17th of 33, is 24 3/4 in (63 cm), and the middle half runs 24 to 25 in. IKEA's own counter tables agree: RÄVSTEN, SKOGSTA and VIHALS are 36 1/4 in (92 cm) high, and RÄVSTEN and SKOGSTA are sold with matching 24 3/8 in stools, an 11 7/8 in gap. IKEA's VADHOLMA and TORNVIKEN islands are 35 3/8 in (90 cm).
Where 10 to 12 in comes from: an 8.15 in thigh and an 11.5 in elbow#
The band has a physical floor and ceiling, both readable from ANSUR II, the US Army's 2012 survey of 4,082 men and 1,986 women. The percentiles are the site's own computation from its public files.
| ANSUR II measure | Women 5th / 50th / 95th | Men 5th / 50th / 95th | What it sets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thigh clearance, seat to top of thigh | 5.7 / 6.6 / 7.5 in (145 / 167 / 191 mm) | 6.2 / 7.1 / 8.15 in (157 / 180 / 207 mm) | The minimum gap |
| Elbow rest height, seat to elbow | 7.4 / 9.2 / 10.9 in (189 / 233 / 276 mm) | 7.8 / 9.7 / 11.5 in (197 / 246 / 291 mm) | The maximum gap |
| Popliteal height, foot to underside of knee | 13.8 / 15.2 / 16.9 in (350 / 387 / 428 mm) | 15.4 / 16.9 / 18.5 in (390 / 430 / 471 mm) | The footrest |
The floor. Under a 36 in counter with a 1 1/2 in top, a 24 3/4 in seat leaves 36 - 1 1/2 - 24 3/4 = 9 3/4 in (25 cm) under the worktop. The 95th percentile man's thigh is 8.15 in, leaving 1.6 in (4 cm) for clothing and movement. A 26 in seat leaves 8 1/2 in, 0.35 in to spare. The 10 in minimum is the largest common thigh plus a standard worktop.
The ceiling. A seated elbow sits 7.4 to 11.5 in (19 to 29 cm) above the seat. At an 11 1/4 in gap the worktop is 2 in above the median woman's elbow and level with the largest man's, so forearms rest without lifting the shoulders. At 12 in it is above the 95th-percentile elbow of both sexes; at 14 in, 6.6 in above a small woman's.
Bar height: nine stools, a median of 29 1/2 in, and 41 3/8 in tables#
Fixed bar-height stools are scarcer: IKEA US lists three, two of them outdoor. Nine give a seat height:
| Seat height | cm | Stool | Gap at a 42 in bar | Gap at IKEA's 41 3/8 in tables |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28 in | 71 | Blu Dot Skiff, outdoor | 14 in (36 cm) | 13 3/8 in |
| 28 3/4 in | 73 | IKEA NÄMMARÖ, outdoor | 13 1/4 in (34 cm) | 12 5/8 in |
| 29 1/8 in | 74 | IKEA SEGERÖN, outdoor swivel | 12 7/8 in (33 cm) | 12 1/4 in |
| 29 1/2 in | 75 | IKEA YNGVAR; Audo Passage bar stool | 12 1/2 in (32 cm) | 11 7/8 in |
| 30 in | 76 | Blu Dot Hot Mesh | 12 in (30 cm) | 11 3/8 in |
| 30 3/8 in | 77 | Audo ML42 bar stool | 11 5/8 in (30 cm) | 11 in |
| 31 in | 79 | Blu Dot Real Good | 11 in (28 cm) | 10 3/8 in |
| 32 in | 81 | Blu Dot Wicket | 10 in (25 cm) | 9 3/8 in |
The median, 29 1/2 in (75 cm), leaves 12 1/2 in at a true 42 in bar, just outside the band. It suits a lower top: every IKEA US bar table, NORDVIKEN, RÖNNINGE, STENSELE, NÄMMARÖ and BÅTSKÄR, is 41 3/8 in (105 cm), where it leaves 11 7/8 in. By the thigh and elbow figures, a 42 in bar under a 1 1/2 in top takes 30 to 32 in, with 30 to 31 in the comfortable middle. The tops themselves are compared in counter height vs bar height.
Footrests: 8 to 10 1/2 in on a counter stool#
At 25 in no adult's feet reach the floor: the underside of the knee is 13.8 to 18.5 in (35 to 47 cm) above the foot in ANSUR II. The feet want to be at the seat height less the popliteal height, lowered by any shoe sole.
| Seat | 5th percentile woman | Median woman | Median man | 95th percentile man |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 3/4 in (63 cm) counter stool | 11 in (28 cm) | 9 1/2 in (24 cm) | 7 7/8 in (20 cm) | 6 1/4 in (16 cm) |
| 29 1/2 in (75 cm) bar stool | 15 3/4 in (40 cm) | 14 1/4 in (36 cm) | 12 5/8 in (32 cm) | 11 in (28 cm) |
Nine Poly & Bark counter stools list a footrest, at 8 to 10 1/2 in (20 to 27 cm): the seat height less 13 to 18 in, median 16 in. That puts the rail halfway between the median woman's and median man's feet. Faro and Finnley have a ring at 3 1/2 in (9 cm), a stretcher no seated adult can reach. A bar stool needs its rail about 4 3/4 in higher. The bar stool height calculator estimates the rail at the seat less 18 in, about an inch more than the median man's 16.9 in popliteal height; a rail cut for smaller users sits higher.
Adjustable stools: 4 3/8 to 11 in of travel#
A gas lift serves both heights only if it travels about 10 in. Poly & Bark's Sola, Cavo and Finta run 20.7 to 32.7 in (53 to 83 cm), 10.7 to 11 in of travel, and Cavo's footrest rises with the seat, from 4 to 15 in. IKEA's JANINGE runs 22 to 29 7/8 in (56 to 76 cm) and just reaches a 42 in bar. DALFRED, at 24 3/4 to 29 1/8 in (63 to 74 cm), suits a counter or a 41 in table but sits 12 7/8 in below a 42 in bar. The lift itself works as on office chairs, and spacing for swivel stools is set out in kitchen island clearances.
Knee space and the aisle behind: NKBA guidelines 8 and 9#
The National Kitchen and Bath Association sets the room forward and behind.
| Top height | Seat, by this page's figures | NKBA knee space per diner (guideline 9) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 in (762 mm) table | 18 in (46 cm) chair | 24 x 18 in (610 x 457 mm) |
| 36 in (914 mm) counter | 24 3/4 in (63 cm) | 24 x 15 in (610 x 381 mm) |
| 42 in (1,067 mm) bar | 30 to 31 in (76 to 79 cm) | 24 x 12 in (610 x 305 mm) |
The knee space loses 3 in of depth for every 6 in the top rises. Behind the diner, guideline 8 asks for 32 in (813 mm) from the counter or table edge to any wall or obstruction where nobody passes, 36 in (914 mm) where traffic edges past and 44 in (1,118 mm) where it walks past, the same figures as dining clearances at a table. Read them with the walkway widths the rest of the room needs, and divide a counter run by the 24 in (610 mm) width per diner.
Accessible seating is lower. NKBA's access standard puts it at 28 to 34 in (711 to 864 mm) high, 30 to 36 in wide and 17 to 25 in deep; ADA 902.3 sets 28 to 34 in, and 226.1 requires 5 per cent of dining seating to comply where the ADA applies. In a kitchen, that means a table-height section of island.
Counters that are not 36 in: 34, 39 and 45 in tops#
A baking section, a raised breakfast bar, a seated workbench or an outdoor kitchen counter can fall between the two. Subtract 10 to 12 in from the finished top, then check the underside against the 8.15 in thigh.
| Finished top | Seat range | cm | Stools in this set that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 34 in (86 cm) | 22 to 24 in | 56 to 61 | 9 of 33 counter stools; adjustables |
| 36 in (91 cm) | 24 to 26 in | 61 to 66 | 27 of 33 counter stools |
| 39 in (99 cm) | 27 to 29 in | 69 to 74 | ML42 counter, Skiff, NÄMMARÖ; adjustables |
| 41 3/8 in (105 cm), IKEA bar tables | 29 3/8 to 31 3/8 in | 75 to 80 | YNGVAR, Passage bar, Hot Mesh, ML42 bar, Real Good |
| 42 in (107 cm) | 30 to 32 in | 76 to 81 | Hot Mesh, ML42 bar, Real Good, Wicket |
| 45 in (114 cm) | 33 to 35 in | 84 to 89 | None in this set |
Only three fixed stools suit a 39 in top. How a top reaches 36 in from a 34 1/2 in cabinet is in kitchen counter and cabinet heights.
Where these figures stop applying#
Children. The figures are adult. A child at a counter needs a footrest close under the seat, covered in kids desk and chair heights by age.
The population. ANSUR II measured soldiers, and 5 per cent of its own men exceed 8.15 in. A household with a large user should take the low end.
The listings. The stools are those whose pages gave a seat height in October 2026, not full ranges. EQ3 and Maiden Home gave no readable figures, and Blu Dot pages listing two heights under one set of dimensions were left out.
Tables. At a table with an apron the thigh meets the apron, as dining table dimensions explains. The rest of furniture dimensions follows the same seat-to-surface logic, and the sources policy covers how listings are read.
Six checks before you buy counter or bar stools#
Frequently asked questions#
What height stool for a 36 inch counter?
A 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) seat, and 24 3/4 in (63 cm) if you want the middle of the market: that is the median of 33 fixed counter stools from four makers. It leaves 11 1/4 in (29 cm) between seat and worktop. The 24 in stools suit a thick slab top; the 26 in ones suit a thin laminate top and smaller users. Above 26 in, check the worktop's thickness first.
What height stool for a 42 inch bar?
Thirty to 31 in (76 to 79 cm), which leaves 11 to 12 in (28 to 30 cm). The median of nine fixed bar stools from IKEA, Blu Dot and Audo is lower, 29 1/2 in (75 cm), a 12 1/2 in gap at 42 in. It fits IKEA's bar tables, which are 41 3/8 in (105 cm), not 42. A 32 in stool under one of those leaves only 9 3/8 in.
What is the difference between a counter stool and a bar stool?
About 5 in (13 cm) of seat height: counter stools sit at 23 1/2 to 27 1/4 in (60 to 69 cm) for a 36 in counter, bar stools at 28 to 32 in (71 to 81 cm) for a 42 in bar. The names are not reliable. IKEA's US site types every one of its stools, counter height included, as a bar stool, and Audo's ML42 counter stool sits at 69 cm (27 1/4 in).
How much space should be between a bar stool and the counter?
Ten to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) from the top of the seat to the top of the counter. The lower figure is the largest seated thigh, 8.15 in (207 mm) for a 95th-percentile man in ANSUR II, plus a 1 1/2 in worktop. The upper figure is the seated elbow, 7.4 to 11.5 in (19 to 29 cm) above the seat from the 5th-percentile woman to the 95th-percentile man in ANSUR II: past 12 in, the counter is above both.
Can I use a 30 inch stool at a 36 inch counter?
No. A 30 in (76 cm) seat leaves 6 in (15 cm) to the top of a 36 in counter and about 4 1/2 in under a 1 1/2 in worktop, less than the 5.7 in (145 mm) thigh of a 5th-percentile woman in ANSUR II, so it fails for at least 95 per cent of the survey's women and men. The reverse mistake, a 24 in stool at a 42 in bar, leaves 18 in, which puts the worktop 6 1/2 in above even a 95th-percentile man's elbow.
How high should a footrest be on a counter stool?
Eight to 10 1/2 in (20 to 27 cm) off the floor on the nine Poly & Bark counter stools that list it, which is the seat height less 13 to 18 in (median 16 in). ANSUR II puts the underside of the knee 13.8 to 18.5 in (35 to 47 cm) above the foot, so on a 25 in seat the feet want to be 6 1/2 to 11 in up. A rail at 8 to 9 in suits the middle of that range.
How much overhang do counter stools need?
NKBA guideline 9 asks for a knee space 24 in (610 mm) wide and 15 in (381 mm) deep for each diner at a 36 in counter, 12 in (305 mm) deep at 42 in and 18 in (457 mm) at a 30 in table. The 12 in (30 cm) overhang often built on islands is 3 in short of the counter figure, so check what is under the top beyond it.
Do adjustable bar stools work at both counter and bar height?
Only if the gas lift travels about 10 in (25 cm). The three Poly & Bark swivel stools run 20.7 to 32.7 in (53 to 83 cm) and cover both. IKEA's DALFRED, at 24 3/4 to 29 1/8 in (63 to 74 cm), suits a counter or a 39 to 41 in top but sits 12 7/8 in below a 42 in bar. Check the listed range against both of your heights.
