Workbench height, depth and clearances
There is no standard workbench height. There are three, and they are eleven inches apart.

Short answer
For a user of 5 ft 9 in (175 cm), build at 34 in (86 cm) for heavy work, 39 in (99 cm) for general assembly and 45 in (114 cm) for precision work. Each is an offset from standing elbow height, which is about 0.62 of stature, or 43 in (109 cm) for that user. Depth stops at 24 in (61 cm) because standing reach across a bench runs out near 26 in (66 cm). Too low and your back does the work; too high and you cannot push down on anything.

Ask what height a workbench should be and you will be told 34 in, or 36, or "counter height", by people who are all correct about different benches. The spread is not noise. It is the difference between a surface you push down on, a surface you assemble on and a surface you peer at, and those three sit roughly 34, 39 and 45 in (86, 99 and 114 cm) above the floor for the same person on the same day.
Elbow height is the datum, and the floor is not#
Every work surface height in this article is an offset from standing elbow height: the distance from the surface you stand on to the crease of the elbow, arms hanging relaxed, shoulders down. It runs at about 0.62 of stature, which is a ratio stable enough to design from and easy enough to check in 30 seconds with a helper and a tape.

The offsets are not arbitrary either. Heavy work sits 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) below the elbow because force applied downward comes from the shoulders and the body weight, and you cannot lean over a surface at elbow height. Assembly sits 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) below because the hands work best just under the elbow with the forearms level. Precision work sits 2 to 4 in above, because the limiting factor stops being force and becomes the distance from the eye to the object. The same three-band logic governs every work surface height by task in a house, from a kneading counter to a standing desk.
The word "floor" is doing real work in that definition. An anti-fatigue mat raises you by its own thickness, typically 1/2 to 3/4 in (13 to 19 mm), which subtracts the same amount from the effective bench height. A garage slab is laid to fall toward the door at 1 to 2 per cent, so a bench built level along the back wall is correct where you measured and progressively wrong as you move along it only if the fall runs that way. Measure at the point you will stand, with the mat in place.
Twenty-four inches deep, because reach stops at twenty-six#
Functional forward reach across a bench, standing with the hips against the front edge and without leaning, is about 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) for the middle of the adult range. That single figure caps the useful depth of a bench, and it explains a pattern every workshop shows: the back six inches of a deep bench are always occupied by things nobody has moved in a year.
Work it through. A 24 in (61 cm) top keeps every point within reach. A 30 in (76 cm) top has a 4 to 6 in strip at the back that requires a lean. A 36 in (91 cm) top has a 10 in (25 cm) strip that requires climbing onto the bench, and it will become storage whether or not that was the intention. The way to get depth without losing the top is to split it: 24 in of working surface plus a 6 in (15 cm) tool ledge raised 3 to 4 in behind it, which gives 30 in of total depth, keeps the front 24 in clear, and puts the things you reach for most inside the near band described in reach zones and useful storage heights.
A 4 in deep by 4 in high (100 x 100 mm) toe recess at the base is worth more than it looks. Without one you stand roughly 3 to 4 in back from the front edge, which is 3 to 4 in taken off your reach across the top. Cutting the recess buys back exactly as much usable depth as making the bench 4 in shallower, at no cost in surface.
The 36 in in front, and the car that wants to park in it#
A bench needs 36 in (91 cm) of clear floor in front of it to stand and work, the same primary figure used for walkway and circulation widths everywhere else in a house. Make it 48 in (122 cm) if anyone passes behind you while you work, and 60 in (152 cm) if you swing long stock or open a full-length drawer.
In a garage that space is contested, and the arithmetic decides where the bench goes:
- End wall. A 24 in bench plus 36 in of standing room adds 60 in (152 cm) to the depth the vehicle already needs. A crew-cab pickup needing 25 ft 4 in (7.72 m) of internal depth turns into 30 ft 4 in with a bench behind it.
- Side wall of a double. Two full-size vehicles and their three 30 in door swings use 252 in of the 280 in (7.11 m) inside a nominal 24 x 24 ft garage. A 24 in bench leaves a 4 in margin, which is not a margin. A 16 in (41 cm) deep bench leaves 12 in, which works.
- Folding or rolling. A 20 in (51 cm) deep folding bench on a side wall occupies nothing when down and borrows the door-swing strip when up, which is the only arrangement that fits a single garage sized as in garage sizes: single, double and triple.
Under the top, a seated station needs 27 in (69 cm) of clear height, 24 in (61 cm) of knee depth and 30 in (76 cm) of width. The stool follows the bench at 11 to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) below the top, which is the same differential that governs bar stool and counter stool heights, and any bench over about 40 in (102 cm) needs a footrest on the stool because your feet will not reach the floor.
Length, the shelf above and power at 45 in#
Length is the cheapest dimension on a bench and the one most often cut short. Forty-eight inches (122 cm) is the minimum worth building. Seventy-two inches (183 cm) is where a bench stops being a shelf, because it gives one clear working zone of about 30 in and one staging zone beside it. Ninety-six inches (244 cm) takes a full 48 x 96 in (1220 x 2440 mm) sheet with support at both ends.
Above the bench, leave 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) of clear height before the first shelf: on a 39 in bench that puts the underside at 57 to 63 in (145 to 160 cm), high enough to stand a bottle or a drill on the top and low enough to reach. Keep the highest shelf under 72 in (183 cm), and take the depth and spacing figures from garage shelving and overhead storage, with the span between supports checked against shelf span, thickness and sag if the shelf will carry paint or hardware.
Outlets belong 6 in (15 cm) above the finished top, so 45 in (114 cm) above the floor over a 39 in bench, which is high enough that a plug and its cord clear the surface and low enough to stay inside the near reach band. That is appreciably higher than a domestic socket and slightly higher than a kitchen one, for reasons set out in socket and outlet heights. Bench height and counter height are also not the same conversation: the 36 in (91 cm) figure in kitchen counter and cabinet heights is a compromise across many tasks and many users, which is exactly what a single-user bench does not have to be. What is the standard workbench height?
There is no single one. Thirty-four inches (86 cm) is the traditional hand-tool figure, 36 in (91 cm) matches a kitchen counter and suits mechanical work, and 38 to 40 in (97 to 102 cm) suits assembly and electronics. All three are offsets from standing elbow height, which is roughly 0.62 of stature, so a person of 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) should subtract about 3 in from every figure quoted.
How do I work out my own bench height?
Stand on the surface you will actually stand on, mat included, arms relaxed, and have someone measure from the floor to the crease of your elbow. That is your datum. Subtract 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) for heavy work, 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) for general assembly, or add 2 to 4 in for close work. An anti-fatigue mat raises you by its own thickness, so measure with it down.
How deep should a workbench be?
Twenty-four inches (61 cm) of working top. Functional forward reach across a bench for a standing adult is about 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm), so a 24 in top keeps every point on it reachable without leaning. How much space do you need in front of a workbench?
Thirty-six inches (91 cm) to stand and work, 48 in (122 cm) if anyone has to pass behind you, and 60 in (152 cm) if you rotate long stock. In a garage the car usually occupies that space, so measure the clear distance from the bench face to the nearest part of the parked vehicle rather than to the far wall.
How high should a bench vice be?
The traditional rule is that the top of the jaws sits at standing elbow height for filing, and about 4 in (100 mm) below it for heavy hammering. An engineer's vice with 5 in (125 mm) jaws stands roughly 6 in (150 mm) above the bench, so a 43 in elbow height implies a 37 in (94 cm) bench top. A woodworking face vice has its jaw flush with the top and adds nothing.
What height should a workbench be for a seated user?
Bench height minus 11 to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) gives the seat height, so a 39 in (99 cm) bench needs a 26 to 28 in stool and a 45 in (114 cm) bench needs a 32 to 34 in stool plus a footrest. Allow 27 in (69 cm) of clear height under the top, 24 in (61 cm) of knee depth and 30 in (76 cm) of width per person.
How long should a workbench be?
Forty-eight inches (122 cm) is the minimum that is worth building, 72 in (183 cm) is the size at which a bench stops being a shelf, and 96 in (244 cm) lets you lay a full 48 x 96 in (1220 x 2440 mm) sheet on it with support at both ends. Length is cheap in material terms and is the dimension people regret most.
Should a garage workbench go on the end wall or the side wall?
The side wall in most garages. A 24 in bench plus 36 in of standing room adds 60 in (152 cm) to the depth a vehicle already needs, so an end-wall bench turns a 26 ft garage into a 28 ft one. On a side wall a 16 in (41 cm) deep bench costs only 16 in of width, which a 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) double can usually absorb.
