Short answer

8 ft (2.44 m) of clear height for a standard 4 ft (122 cm) heavy bag hung with its top level with your head: your height plus about 22 1/2 in (57 cm) of hanger and chain, which covers users up to about 6 ft 2 in. A 6 ft (183 cm) Thai bag needs about 9 ft (2.74 m) or it reaches the floor. For floor, plan 10 x 10 ft (3.05 x 3.05 m) round a swinging bag, 8 x 8 ft if it is tied down.

A standard 4 ft (122 cm) heavy bag needs about 8 ft (2.44 m) of clear height, and a 6 ft (183 cm) Thai bag about 9 ft (2.74 m). The 4 ft figure is your height plus 22 1/2 in (57 cm) of hanger and chain, with the bag's top level with your head. The 6 ft figure ignores your height: the bag is longer than your head is high, so the floor sets the ceiling. Below are 24 bags' sizes, the hardware, the body figures and the floor a bag needs. Other equipment is on the home gym hub.

The stack: hanger, chain, bag and the gap under it#

A hanging bag is four lengths stacked from the ceiling down, and the ceiling you need is their sum.

  1. The hanger. Title's Forged Steel Swivel Beam Hanger is 4 1/2 in (11 cm) high and rated for 250 lb.
  2. The chain, swivel and hooks. Everlast's swivel and chain assembly is 16 7/8 in (43 cm) long and "can hold up to 100 lbs". Title's Club chain set is 18 in (46 cm) for bags up to 100 lb; its Platinum Pro chain and swivel is 29 in (74 cm) for bags up to 250 lb.
  3. The bag. 36 to 73 in (91 to 185 cm) in the 24 bags below, median 48 in (122 cm).
  4. The gap under it, between the bag's bottom and the finished floor.

Measure from the underside of the joist the hanger bolts to down to the finished floor, mat in place, at the bag's spot: the lowest joist, duct or track there counts, as ceiling heights and datum lines explains.

Title's Classic and Platinum Wall Hanger 2.0 manuals put "the top bar at least 8' (96") high", which "allows approximately 18"-24" for the heavy bag hanging chain or straps and attachment S-hook or spring hook". Its Made in USA wall mount instructions put the eyebolt "in general terms" at 96 in.

24 bags measured: 36 to 73 in long, median 48 in#

Sizes as each maker prints them, shortest first. Title prints its sizes in both orders, so its "14 x 72" Thai bag is 72 in long.

Counting each size once, that is 24 bags in two groups: nineteen boxing bags of 36 to 60 in, clustered on 42 and 48 in, and five Thai and banana bags of 70 to 73 in, made long to be kicked low. Nothing sits between 60 and 70 in.

Everlast's size guide recommends "a heavy bag that is approximately half your weight": 60 lb up to 5 ft 5 in, 100 lb at 6 ft and up. The median man in ANSUR II, the US Army's 2012 survey of 4,082 men and 1,986 women, weighs 187 lb (84.6 kg), so 100 lb is the common class, and Title's 100 lb bags are 42, 48, 56 or 72 in long. Weight does not decide the ceiling; length does.

Where 8 ft comes from: your height plus 22 1/2 in#

Title's manuals say "you want to punch the heavy bag in the top third to middle of the bag". A bag stands in for an opponent of your size, so the site sets its top level with the top of your head. The top third of a 48 in bag then runs 16 in down from the crown and takes in the chin and shoulders: ANSUR II puts the shoulder 11 1/2 in (29 cm) below the crown for the median woman and 12.4 in (31 cm) for the median man.

The hang point is your height plus the chain, and the ceiling adds the 4 1/2 in hanger. For a 48 in bag with its top at the crown (percentiles computed by the site from the public ANSUR II data; Everlast's 16 7/8 in chain takes 1 1/8 in off the middle column):

User, ANSUR IIHeightCeiling, 18 in chainCeiling, 24 in chainBag bottom

Man, 95th percentile73.6 in (1,870 mm)96.1 in (2.44 m)102.1 in (2.59 m)25.6 in (65 cm)

An 8 ft (96 in) ceiling covers every row on a short chain: the 95th percentile man, 6 ft 1 1/2 in, needs 96.1 in on 18 in of chain and 95.0 in on Everlast's. In ANSUR II 3.9 per cent of men, and no women, are taller than 74 in.

On Title's 96 in wall bar with 18 to 24 in of chain, a 48 in bag's top lands at 72 to 78 in, the head of a 6 ft to 6 ft 6 in user. For anyone shorter the chain is the adjustment: Title's 29 in chain hangs the bag 11 in lower than an 18 in one.

Hanger and chain take 22 1/2 in (57 cm) and the bag 48 in (122 cm), leaving 25 1/2 in (65 cm) under it on an 8 ft ceiling. The top of the bag is level with the head of a 95th percentile man. A 72 in Thai bag on the same hardware would end 1 1/2 in above the floor.

Long bags: when the floor sets the ceiling, not your height#

The site allows a 6 in (15 cm) gap under the bag, enough to clear a mat and keep a low kick from driving it into the floor; Title's Canvas Heavy Bag Anchor, a tie-down, is 10 in (25 cm) tall. The ceiling is then the larger of your height or the bag's length plus 6 in, plus hanger and chain. With a 4 1/2 in hanger and an 18 in chain:

On Title's own geometry, a 96 in bar and 18 to 24 in of chain, its 72 in Thai bags end 0 to 6 in off the floor. With the 6 in gap, a 6 ft bag needs 100 1/2 in (8 ft 4 1/2 in) on 18 in of chain and 106 1/2 in (8 ft 10 1/2 in) on 24 in, so the site's figure for a long bag is 9 ft (2.74 m).

Floor: 8 x 8 ft tied down, 10 x 10 ft swinging free#

A bag is worked from every side, so its floor is a circle: the bag's radius plus the person. ANSUR II's thumb-tip reach runs from a wall at the shoulder blades to the thumb tip, arm straight forward: a straight punch, back included. Computed by the site, it runs from 26.5 in (674 mm) for a 5th percentile woman to 34.9 in (886 mm) for a 95th percentile man. Add a 16 in bag's 8 in radius and the largest reach puts the person's back 42.9 in (109 cm) from the centre.

Title sells its 48 in (122 cm) wall arms as giving "a full 360-degree access around bag". That is 5 in beyond the 95th percentile man's back at full extension, a real working radius: an 8 ft (2.44 m) circle, so 8 x 8 ft, for a bag held still or tied down.

A free bag swings away when hit. Its sideways travel is the distance from pivot to the bag's centre times the sine of the angle, about 0.17 of it per 10 degrees. A 48 in bag on 18 in of chain swings on 42 in, about 7 1/4 in (18 cm) per 10 degrees; a 72 in bag on 29 in swings on 65 in, about 11 1/4 in (29 cm). Title's buying guide agrees: a bag hung "from a taller ceiling with a longer chain" swings more.

The site adds 12 in (30 cm) for swing, about 16 degrees on the short hang and 11 on the long one. That gives 60 in (152 cm) from the centre, a 10 ft (3.05 m) circle, and a 10 x 10 ft (3.05 x 3.05 m) room or bay for a free bag, the same 100 sq ft that home gym size and ceiling height gives as the workable minimum for one activity. Against the standard and minimum room sizes, a 10 x 10 ft spare bedroom holds one swinging bag and nothing else.

The middle circle, 48 in (122 cm) in radius, is a 95th percentile man's reach plus the bag, matching Title's 360-degree wall arm. The outer circle adds 12 in (30 cm) of swing: 10 ft (3.05 m) across, the size of the room.

Wall arms: 28, 36 or 48 in out, and the gap they leave behind#

The gap behind a bag on a wall arm is the arm less the bag's radius. Title's Made in USA wall mount has a 28 in (71 cm) arm, rated 300 lb, leaving 20 in behind a 16 in bag. Its Space Saver 2.0 and the Fighting Slip-N-Move 2.0 have 36 in arms, leaving 28 in (71 cm), shorter than the thumb-tip reach of 78 per cent of women and 99 per cent of men in ANSUR II: you can stand behind the bag but not extend a punch. Only the Classic and Platinum 2.0, with 48 in arms, leave 40 in (102 cm) and a full circle. The room's clear depth is then the arm plus the front radius: 96 in (2.44 m) for a tied bag, 108 in (2.74 m) with the swing allowance.

What shifts it: chain ratings, door tracks and stands#

Ratings. Everlast's 16 7/8 in assembly and Title's 18 in Club chain are both for bags up to 100 lb, so a 135 lb bag needs something like Title's 250 lb Platinum Pro chain, and its 29 in of length. Title's Heavy Duty Wood Beam Hanger fits 2 x 6 to 2 x 12 joists and holds 200 lb; its Rafter Hanger spans two joists on 16 in centres. A spring adds its own length to the chain figure. A joist's own capacity is a question for the floor above, not this page.

Garages. A sectional door's horizontal track usually hangs 10 to 14 in (25 to 36 cm) below the ceiling across the bay, as garage door sizes, headroom and backroom sets out, so a bag goes behind the open door zone. Beside a parked car, the arithmetic in garage gym layout dimensions leaves a 10 ft wide strip only in a 20 ft double, which is the smallest of the garage sizes that takes a swinging bag with the car in.

Stands. Title's Heavy Bag and Speed Bag Stand (46 x 47 x 85 in) and 4-Score stand (66 x 48 x 94 in, 168 x 122 x 239 cm) take 100 lb bags and are sold as fitting 8 ft ceilings; its heavy duty single stand, 101 in (2.57 m), does not. A stand's base takes one side of the circle. Freestanding bags need no fixing: Everlast's Core is 5 ft 4 in tall, Title's Hydro-Flex H2O 70 in. Convert sizes once with the unit converter.

Mats, mirrors and the stations next to the bag#

A 3/4 in (19 mm) rubber mat takes 3/4 in off every ceiling figure; options are in gym flooring thickness and tile sizes. The circle must not overlap a barbell's step-back zone, in squat rack and lifting platform dimensions, or a treadmill's run-off zone, in treadmill and cardio clearances. A footwork mirror goes outside it (home gym mirrors), and so does the 36 in (91 cm) walkway width past it. Tape both circles at full size first, as taping out a layout describes. The body figures are summarised in anthropometric data for interiors; the other home activity whose ceiling comes from the body is in golf simulator room size.

Frequently asked questions#

Can you hang a heavy bag from an 8 ft ceiling?

Yes, for a 4 ft (122 cm) bag. With a 4 1/2 in swivel hanger and an 18 in chain, the bag's top sits at 73 1/2 in (1.87 m), level with the head of a 6 ft 1 1/2 in user, and its bottom 25 1/2 in off the floor. A 6 ft Thai bag on the same ceiling ends 1 1/2 in above the floor, and touches it on 24 in of chain.

How high should a heavy bag hang?

With its top level with the top of your head, so the top third of the bag covers your own head and shoulders. Title's wall hanger manuals say to punch the bag in the top third to the middle. For a 4 ft bag that puts the bottom between 12 in (30 cm) for a short woman and 26 in (66 cm) for a tall man, and the chain length is what sets it.

How much space do you need around a heavy bag?

About 48 in (122 cm) from the bag's centre in every direction to stand at punching range all round, so an 8 ft (2.44 m) circle, which is also the arm length Title sells for 360-degree access. A bag that swings needs more: the site plans 60 in (152 cm), a 10 ft (3.05 m) circle, so a 10 x 10 ft room or bay.

How far from the wall should a heavy bag be?

48 in (122 cm) from the wall to the bag's centre if you want to work all round it, as on Title's 48 in wall arms. On a 36 in arm the gap behind a 16 in bag is 28 in (71 cm), shorter than the thumb-tip reach of 78 per cent of women in ANSUR II and 99 per cent of men, so you can stand there only at touching range.

How long is the chain on a heavy bag?

Everlast's swivel and chain assembly is 16 7/8 in (43 cm) long and rated for 100 lb. Title's Club chain set is 18 in (46 cm), also for 100 lb bags, and its Platinum Pro chain and swivel is 29 in (74 cm) for bags up to 250 lb. Title's manuals allow 18 to 24 in for the chain or straps plus the hook.

Does a longer chain make a heavy bag swing more?

Yes. Title's buying guide says a bag on a longer chain from a taller ceiling swings more, and one on a shorter chain swings less and gives more resistance. The geometry agrees: the bag's sideways travel for a given angle is proportional to the distance from the pivot to the bag's centre, 42 in for a 4 ft bag on 18 in of chain and 65 in for a 6 ft bag on 29 in.

What if my ceiling is too low for a heavy bag?

Use a stand or a freestanding bag. Title's heavy bag and speed bag stand is 85 in (2.16 m) tall and its 4-Score stand 94 in (2.39 m), both sold as fitting 8 ft ceilings; Title's heavy duty single stand is 101 in (2.57 m) and does not. Freestanding bags need no ceiling fixing: Everlast's Core freestanding bag stands 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) and Title's Hydro-Flex H2O 70 in (178 cm).
