Short answer

Leave 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) of clear height above the machine top. Over a 38 in (97 cm) US front loader that puts the cabinet bottom at 54 in (137 cm) above finished floor, the same line kitchens use. Over an 850 mm European machine it is about 1,300 mm (51 in), and over a top loader it is 66 to 68 in (168 to 173 cm) because the lid has to swing. Below that band you cannot pour detergent. Above it, nobody can reach.

There are only two heights to settle above a washer and dryer: how far the cabinet bottom sits above the floor, and how far the top shelf sits above everybody's reach. The first gets set by the machine, badly. The second gets ignored, and it is the one that decides whether the storage is used. Both come out of the same short piece of arithmetic, and the machine, the arm and the ceiling each get a term in it.

The datum is the finished floor, not the machine top#

Cabinets get set out from the machine because the machine is what is in the room. It is the wrong reference for three reasons, and all of them are dated events rather than dimensions.

Machines change. A washer replaced in eight years may be 1.5 in (38 mm) taller, because US front loaders run 38 to 39 in (97 to 99 cm) and levelling feet add another inch of adjustment. Floors change: 5/8 in (16 mm) of engineered board or 3/8 in (10 mm) of tile and bed over an existing floor raises the machine and nothing else. And pedestals get bought later, taking the top up 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) in a single afternoon.

So take every height on this page as AFF, above finished floor, the abbreviation defined in the glossary, and use the machine only to check the gap that results. Mark a level line at 54 in (137 cm) all round the room, in pencil, before anything is fixed. Every other height on that wall can be struck off it.

The gap above the machine, and what has to happen in it#

The clear space between the machine top and the cabinet underside is doing three jobs, and the largest of them wins.

  1. Pouring. A 150 fl oz (4.4 L) detergent jug is 12 to 13 in (30 to 33 cm) tall and has to be tipped over a drawer set into the machine fascia. Tipping needs roughly the height of the jug plus a hand: 14 in (36 cm).
  2. Setting a basket down. A large laundry basket is 12 in (30 cm) tall and the hands on its rim add another 3 in, which is 15 in (38 cm).
  3. Seeing the controls. A front loader's control panel sits in the top 4 in (100 mm) of the fascia, angled up. A cabinet underside closer than about 14 in (36 cm) shadows it.

Sixteen inches (41 cm) satisfies all three with a little to spare, and 18 in (46 cm) is comfortable. That is the same band trade practice uses between a kitchen counter and a wall cabinet, and it produces a coincidence worth using: a 38 in machine plus a 16 in gap is 54 in (137 cm), which is exactly where kitchen wall cabinets start, as set out in upper cabinet and backsplash heights. A laundry that adjoins a kitchen can therefore run one unbroken cabinet line through the doorway using standard boxes.

The top loader row is the one people get wrong. The lid is hinged at the rear and swings up past vertical, so its top edge finishes 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) above the machine top. A cabinet at the front-loader height of 54 in is not merely inconvenient over a top loader, it physically stops the lid.

The reach arc that caps the top shelf#

Reach is not a height, it is an arc. The arm pivots at the shoulder, so every inch you reach outward is an inch taken from the height you can reach up to, and the relationship is a circle: the vertical gain above shoulder height is the square root of the arm length squared minus the horizontal distance squared.

Take two users. At 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) the shoulder is about 53 in (135 cm) AFF and the shoulder-to-fingertip length about 26 in (66 cm). At 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) those become 57 in (145 cm) and 28 in (71 cm). Run the arc and the penalty for depth is brutal.

Two corrections turn those into working figures. Touching a shelf is not using it: to grip a 10 lb (4.5 kg) detergent jug and lower it under control, take 5 to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) off every number. And you cannot see the back of a shelf that sits above eye height, roughly 60 in (152 cm) for the shorter user.

Now apply it. A 32 in (81 cm) deep machine with a 12 in (30 cm) cabinet above puts the cabinet front edge 20 in (51 cm) beyond the machine face, which is where you stand. Read the 20 in row: 70 in to touch, about 64 in (163 cm) to lift. A 30 in (762 mm) cabinet with its bottom at 54 in reaches 84 in AFF, and its middle shelf sits near 69 in. Everything above 64 in is a step-stool. The machine puts 20 in of horizontal distance between the user and the cabinet front. That distance, not the ceiling, is what caps the useful shelf height.

Cabinet depth over a machine#

Depth is where the reach arc gets spent, and the trade is direct: every inch of cabinet depth is an inch closer, so an inch of height back.

The 18 and 24 in rows carry a hazard the reach table does not show. Loading a front loader means dropping into a crouch with the head somewhere between 40 and 55 in (102 and 140 cm) AFF, then standing up. The head rises through the 54 in line about 15 to 20 in (38 to 51 cm) out from the wall. A 12 in cabinet leaves that arc clear. An 18 in one puts a hard corner directly in it, which is why deep boxes over machines get their bottom edge padded within a year of being fitted. The carcass depths available and the fillers that make them line through are covered in built-in cabinetry dimensions.

Anything intended to hold a laundry basket is out of this discussion entirely. A basket is 17 in (43 cm) deep and needs 24 in (61 cm) of shelf; a shelf that deep at any height above 54 in is unreachable at the back and unstable at the front. Baskets belong in base cabinets or on an open counter, with the sizes given in ironing board and laundry storage dimensions.

Open shelves, and the load they are actually carrying#

Open shelving reads well in a laundry because everything on it is in daily use and nothing is decorative. The catch is weight. A full 150 fl oz detergent jug is about 10 lb (4.5 kg), so five of them across a 30 in (76 cm) run is 20 lb per foot (30 kg per metre), which is the same design load as a shelf of hardback books. A 60 in (152 cm) shelf spanning both machines with no intermediate support will bow visibly in 3/4 in (18 mm) melamine within a year. Support it at mid span, stiffen the front edge, or check it in the shelf span and sag calculator.

Vertical spacing on an open run follows the tallest bottle plus 2 in (5 cm), so 14 in (36 cm) between shelves for jugs and 10 in (25 cm) for pod tubs and folded cloths. Depth follows the content rather than the wall: 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) here, against the general figures in shelf depth and vertical spacing by content. Two shelves at those pitches, starting at 54 in AFF, land at 54 and 68 in, and the upper one is already above the working reach. That is the whole argument for one open shelf plus a tall unit rather than three open shelves.

Stacked pairs and the wall that disappears#

Stacking is the one arrangement where the cabinet question answers itself. A stacked washer and dryer with a manufacturer's stacking kit finishes at 74 to 80 in (188 to 203 cm), and the dryer's control panel sits at 70 to 76 in (178 to 193 cm) AFF. On a 96 in (2,440 mm) ceiling that leaves 16 to 22 in (41 to 56 cm) of wall, which is a single high shelf and nothing else.

The storage therefore has to go sideways. A tall unit 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm) wide beside the stack gives shelves at 15, 29, 43 and 57 in (380, 740, 1,090 and 1,450 mm) AFF, all of them within reach and none of them over an obstruction. That is more usable litres than the overhead cabinet ever offered, in less wall. The clearances the stack itself needs, including the control panel height and the door swing, are in stacked washer and dryer clearances.

The two systems arrive at almost the same underside by different routes. The US figure is a 36 in counter plus an 18 in gap, giving 54 in (1,372 mm). The European figure is a 900 mm worktop plus a 500 mm gap, giving 1,400 mm (55 in). They differ by about an inch, which is invisible until a run of units crosses from one system to the other and the doors no longer line through. The pedestal buys door height and pays for it in wall storage.

Why can I not reach the top shelf over my washing machine?

Because the machine is an obstruction 32 in (81 cm) deep and your arm is about 26 in (66 cm) long. Reach follows an arc from the shoulder: the further out you reach horizontally, the less height is left. Over a 12 in deep cabinet on a 32 in machine, a 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) adult tops out around 70 in (178 cm) to touch and 64 in (163 cm) to lift anything.

What is the standard laundry wall cabinet height in the UK?

Wall units are made 575, 720 and 900 mm tall and are normally hung with the bottom 450 to 500 mm above a 900 mm worktop, so the underside lands at 1,350 to 1,400 mm (53 to 55 in) and a 720 mm unit tops out at about 2,120 mm (83 in).
