Short answer
A full-size ironing board is 54 x 18 in (137 x 46 cm), adjusts between roughly 28 and 36 in (71 and 91 cm) high, and folds to a slot about 6 in (15 cm) thick. Opened, it wants 66 x 54 in (168 x 137 cm) of clear floor. Set it below counter height: ironing wants the pad about 5 in (13 cm) under your elbow. Too high and you push with your shoulders instead of your weight.

An ironing board is a 54 in (137 cm) beam that has to stand up on its own, adjust through 8 in (20 cm) of height, then vanish into a 6 in (15 cm) gap. Almost every complaint about one traces back to a dimension nobody checked: a pad set too low for the user, or a cupboard 2 in (5 cm) too shallow. Detergent jugs, baskets and hampers have catalogue sizes too, and a utility room that does not work is usually one sized for none of them. What the catalogue number is actually measuring#
Length is taken over the whole top, including the tapered nose. The nose is useful for sleeves but you cannot press flat on it, and it sits outboard of the leg. On a 54 in board the legs cross under the middle third, so the stable flat area is about 34 in (86 cm) long. The last 10 in (25 cm) at each end flexes.
Width is taken at the square end. Boards taper, so a board sold as 18 in (46 cm) wide is 18 in only where the garment is least likely to be.
Height is the number people get wrong, because manufacturers quote the frame rail and you iron on the pad. A cover over a felt or foam pad adds 3/8 to 3/4 in (10 to 19 mm), and a thick replacement pad adds over an inch. The datum is finished floor to the top of the cover.

Two rows do real work. The step from 15 to 18 in of width is the one you feel, because a shirt back is roughly 22 in (56 cm) across laid flat: at 15 in you work it in three passes, at 18 in in two. The step from 42 to 54 in of length buys no extra pressing area, because the zone between the legs barely changes. It gives the part of the garment you are not pressing somewhere to lie flat instead of falling off and creasing again.
Height ranges are consistent across the whole market at about 28 to 36 in (71 to 91 cm) in six to eight notches, occasionally 38 in (97 cm). That is not an accident, and it is the source of the biggest problem on this page.
Setting the height from the elbow, not from the notch#
Standing work heights derive from elbow height, which sits at roughly 0.63 of stature. Tasks needing downward force want the surface below the elbow, so you lean on the tool rather than press with the shoulder. Ironing is the clearest case in the house: the iron weighs 3 lb (1.4 kg) and you add another 5 to 10 lb (2 to 5 kg) of body weight through it. The last two rows are not saying a tall person should buy a different board. They are saying no board is made that fits, and the deficit is paid for by bending from the hips for the length of the task.
The floor a board needs when it is open#
The footprint is the board plus the garment plus the person, and it adds up.
Along the board: 54 in (137 cm) of board, plus about 12 in (30 cm) beyond the nose so a trouser leg can run off without touching a wall. That is 66 in (168 cm). For curtains and long dresses the run-off wants 24 in (61 cm) and the figure becomes 78 in (198 cm).
Across the board: 18 in (46 cm) of board, plus 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) of standing depth on the working side, plus about 12 in (30 cm) on the far side so a hanging sleeve is not brushing the wall. That is 54 in (137 cm), or 60 in (152 cm) if you want to walk round rather than reverse out.
The working minimum is therefore 66 x 54 in (168 x 137 cm), about 25 sq ft (2.3 m2), and the comfortable figure is 78 x 60 in (198 x 152 cm), about 33 sq ft (3.1 m2). That is more clear floor than a queen bed occupies, which is why ironing migrates to the living room.
That footprint has to coexist with everything else that swings. A front-loading machine door opens 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) into the room and the aisle in front of a machine run is 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm), as set out in washer and dryer dimensions. Open a 54 in board across a 60 in room and the machine doors are dead.
Storing the board: what each method needs#
Folded, a standard board is about 60 in (152 cm) tall including the leg overhang, 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm) wide, and 6 in (15 cm) thick over the crossed legs. Design to that last number: the board alone is 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) thick, and people size cupboards to the board.

The door-back bracket deserves the arithmetic. A standard interior door leaf is 1 3/8 in (35 mm) thick, as set out in interior door sizes and rough openings. Add a bracket projecting 5 to 6 in and a board hanging in it, and the assembly occupies about 7 in (18 cm) from the closet side of the door. In a 24 in (61 cm) deep closet that leaves 17 in (43 cm) of usable depth, which no longer takes a laundry basket square on. In a laundry closet with a 32 in (81 cm) deep machine behind a bifold, the bracket does not clear at all.
The recessed cabinet has a quieter problem. A unit meant to sit between studs often needs more depth than a 2x4 wall has: a nominal 2x4 gives 3.5 in (89 mm) of cavity, so a 4.5 in (114 mm) deep body either projects into the room or needs a 2x6 wall or a furring. Check the recess against the wall you have before the plasterboard goes on.
Detergent, and the shelf height it dictates#
Laundry supplies are tall, narrow and heavy, an unusual combination and the reason generic shelf spacing fails here.

The governing figure is 14 in (36 cm) of clear height, and it comes from one object: the refill jug. Everything else fits under 13 in. Depth follows: a jug is about 5 in (13 cm) front to back, so 10 in (25 cm) takes one row plus the hand that gets behind it, and 12 in (30 cm) is comfortable. Deeper and the back row becomes archaeology, the general rule in shelf depth and vertical spacing by content.
Those numbers land almost exactly on a standard wall cabinet. A 12 in (305 mm) nominal box gives about 10.5 in (267 mm) internally once the back and door are deducted: one row of jugs and no more. A 30 in (762 mm) tall cabinet with one adjustable shelf splits into two bays of just over 14 in, which is why laundry cabinets so often ship with exactly one shelf. European carcasses are drilled at 32 mm centres rather than the US 1.25 in, close enough to look interchangeable and far enough apart to matter, the subject of imperial and metric in a house.
Weight matters here. A full 150 fl oz jug weighs about 10 lb (4.5 kg), so five across a 30 in (76 cm) open shelf is 50 lb, or 20 lb per foot (30 kg per metre): the load a shelf of hardbacks carries. Laundry shelves get built from the thinnest board in the shop and then loaded like a bookcase, so run the shelf span and sag calculator before fixing a long open shelf over the machines.

Sizing the hamper is arithmetic. A 70 litre basket packed the way dirty laundry actually gets packed corresponds closely to one full load, whether the machine is quoted as a 4.5 cu ft (127 L) US drum or an 8 kg European one. Those ratings are measured differently and do not convert cleanly, so treat that as a practical equivalence rather than a published one. Take the loads you run in a week, divide by the number of wash days, and that is the standing volume the hamper must hold. Four loads a week washed twice needs two loads of buffer: 140 litres, which is two large baskets or a sorter with a bag to spare.
Then check where they sit. A 17 in (43 cm) deep basket needs 18 in (46 cm) of shelf to perch on and 24 in (61 cm) to sit square with a hand behind it. That is base-cabinet depth, 24 in or 600 mm, not the 12 in of a wall cabinet. Putting everything above the machines works for bottles and fails for baskets, and the heights that decide it are in laundry shelving and cabinet heights. Sorting is the other half: three streams at 24 in of basket each is 72 in (183 cm) of wall side by side against 33 in (84 cm) in a sorter frame, which decides whether a small room can sort at all. A board stood loose behind a door needs the same slot plus something to stop it sliding, because the leg tips are the only contact with the floor.

The height is set by the largest liquid jugs, which run 11 to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) tall with the handle, and the depth by a jug body about 5 in (13 cm) front to back plus room to get a hand behind it. Can you iron on a laundry counter instead of a board?
Yes, and for anyone over about 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) it is the better surface, because a counter can be built at any height and a board cannot exceed 36 to 38 in (91 to 97 cm). Give it a heat-resistant pad and cover, at least 24 in (61 cm) of depth, and keep the board for sleeves and for anything that needs a nose.
