Stacked washer and dryer dimensions and clearances

Stacking solves a width problem by creating a height problem, and only one of them is on the plan.

Short answer

A stacked full-size pair stands 76 to 79 in (193 to 201 cm) tall and 27 in (69 cm) wide, so the closet around it needs 32 in (81 cm) of clear width and 36 in (91 cm) of clear depth. Compacts stack to 67 to 70 in (170 to 178 cm). The height that decides the choice is not the top of the machine, it is the dryer control panel at 72 to 76 in (183 to 193 cm), which is above a comfortable reach for most adults.

Stacking is a trade, and it is worth being precise about what is being traded. You give up 39 in (99 cm) of wall and you get back 39 in of height. The wall you save is on the plan, so everyone sees it. The height you spend is on a section drawing nobody produced, so nobody sees it until the day the dryer beeps and somebody has to stand on their toes to work out why.

The height stack, floor to control panel#

Every dimension in a stacked laundry is a running total from the floor. Set it out that way and the problems declare themselves.

The stacking kit itself is a bracket and a spacer, and it contributes between nothing and about 1 in (25 mm) depending on the manufacturer. Do not treat it as a variable you can lose: it is not a shelf, it is a restraint, and it is there because a washer in an unbalanced spin pushes sideways with a force that can exceed its own weight. Without the bracket the dryer walks off the top.

A European 850 mm pair stacks to about 1,720 mm (67.7 in) including its kit, which is very close to the US compact figure and, as the insight below argues, that is the more important resemblance.

The closet that fits, and the one that does not#

A stacked pair is normally put in a cupboard, and the cupboard is usually the wrong one. Run the plan arithmetic in both directions.

Width. The machine is 27 in (69 cm). Add 1 in (25 mm) of air each side and you have 29 in (74 cm) of clear opening. That is a bare install, with no way to get a hand past the machine. Add 1.5 in (38 mm) each side to work in and the practical clear width is 32 in (81 cm), with 36 in (91 cm) the width at which servicing stops being a two-person job. Note that this is the clear dimension inside the finished linings, not the rough opening.

Depth. The machine is 31 in (79 cm) to the front of the door. Add 4 in (10 cm) behind for hoses and a vent elbow, or about 1 in (25 mm) if the services are recessed, and add the thickness of the closet door itself at 1.375 in (35 mm). The clear depth needed is 36 in (91 cm) with surface services and 34 in (86 cm) with recessed ones.

That depth figure is why so many stacked installs go wrong. A coat closet is built 24 in (61 cm) deep, because 24 in is the depth a hanger needs. A laundry closet is a different object, and its depth requirement comes from an appliance, not a garment. The door on the closet is the second trap#

A closet door has two jobs here and it is easy to satisfy one and fail the other: the machines have to get in through it, and the machine door has to open once they are.

Bifolds are the default in a laundry closet and the worst common choice. Each folded pair parks a stack of panel material 4 to 5 in (10 to 13 cm) thick against its jamb, so a nominal 32 in opening delivers around 23 in (58 cm) clear, which is 4 in narrower than the machine that has to pass through it. The panel widths and stack depths are set out in bifold and folding door dimensions. If bifolds are fixed by the design, specify a 36 in (91 cm) opening and confirm the panels lift off their pivots.

The second half of the problem is the machine door. A front loader door projects about 23 in (58 cm), so it needs the closet door leaf out of its arc. A hinged closet door held open at 90 degrees sits exactly in that arc unless the hinge side is chosen deliberately: hang the closet doors so they open away from the side the machine door is hinged on.

Reach, and who the stack excludes#

The published reach limits are unambiguous. The ADA high forward reach limit is 48 in (122 cm) above the floor for an unobstructed approach, falling to 44 in (112 cm) where the reach is over an obstruction up to 25 in (64 cm) deep. Those figures are set for wheelchair users, and the detail is in accessible reach ranges, forward and side. A stacked dryer panel at 72 to 76 in (183 to 193 cm) is 24 to 32 in outside them, which means a stacked pair cannot form part of an accessible laundry, full stop.

For standing users the constraint is softer but real. Standing shoulder height for a shorter adult is around 50 in (127 cm), and the conventional comfortable band for operating a control runs from roughly hip to shoulder, 30 to 60 in (76 to 152 cm). The percentile figures behind those bands are collected in anthropometric data for interior design. Above 60 in, operation is possible but the wrist extends, the head tilts, and anything printed on a horizontal surface disappears from view. Above about 72 in (183 cm) a top-mounted panel is being operated by touch.

That has a knock-on for households with children and for older adults, whose reach and shoulder mobility change: the machine at the top of a stack is effectively single-user equipment.

Services behind the stack#

The vent outlet on a stacked dryer sits at the bottom rear of the upper machine, which is roughly 39 to 42 in (99 to 107 cm) above the floor, not at ankle level where a side-by-side dryer puts it. That is genuinely convenient: the duct runs out at mid-wall height, above skirting and below any shelf. It still needs 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) behind it for a rigid elbow unless a periscope fitting is used, and it is still subject to the same maximum developed length arithmetic set out in dryer venting dimensions and clearances.

Makeup air is a code requirement rather than a courtesy. The IRC requires openings of not less than 100 sq in (645 cm2) for a domestic clothes dryer installed in a closet, and manufacturers commonly ask for that area to be split between a high and a low opening so the air actually moves. A louvred door panel typically provides 40 to 60 per cent free area, so a 100 sq in requirement means 170 to 250 sq in (1,100 to 1,600 cm2) of louvre. Electrically, the washer needs a 120 V receptacle and a vented dryer normally a 240 V one. Put both above the washer at about 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm), not behind it at 12 in (30 cm): at the higher position a plug can be reached without pulling out 250 lb of machine, and it clears the standpipe. Storage above a stack, and why there usually is not any#

A 79 in (201 cm) stack under a 96 in (244 cm) ceiling leaves 17 in (43 cm). A shelf in that gap has its surface at about 80 in (203 cm), which is above the overhead grip reach of a large share of adults and well outside any useful storage band. It is a place for spare parts, not detergent.

Under a 108 in (274 cm) ceiling the gap becomes 29 in (74 cm), enough for a cabinet with a shelf at 84 in (213 cm) and another at 96 in, both step-ladder storage. A compact stack changes the picture completely: at 70 in (178 cm) it leaves 26 in (66 cm) under an 8 ft ceiling, and a shelf at 74 in (188 cm) is reachable. How tall is a stacked washer and dryer?

What size closet do I need for a stacked washer and dryer?

Thirty-two inches (81 cm) of clear width and 36 in (91 cm) of clear depth as a minimum, 36 x 40 in (91 x 102 cm) if you want to reach down the sides. Depth is the one that catches people: a coat closet is usually 24 in (61 cm) deep, and a 31 in machine plus a rear service allowance simply will not go in it.

Can you stack any washer and dryer?

No. The dryer must be one the manufacturer lists as stackable on that specific washer, and a matched stacking kit must be used. Universal shelf brackets are not equivalent: the kit resists the horizontal shove of an unbalanced spin, which can exceed the machine's own weight, and using one is normally a condition of the warranty.

Can you put the washer on top of the dryer?

No, and it is not a preference. A washer weighs 150 to 250 lb (68 to 113 kg) empty and can approach 350 lb (159 kg) full of water, and an unbalanced spin generates dynamic loads that must be carried straight into the floor rather than through a lighter dryer cabinet. Every stacking kit places the dryer on top for this reason.

How much space do you need above a stacked washer and dryer?

About 6 in (15 cm) clear to lift the dryer onto the bracket and seat it, and 12 in (30 cm) if you want to reach behind for the vent. A 79 in stack under an 8 ft (244 cm) ceiling leaves 17 in (43 cm), which is comfortable. In a 7 ft (213 cm) basement it leaves 5 in, which is not enough to install it.

Does a stacked dryer need a vent in a closet?

A vented dryer does, and it also needs makeup air: the IRC requires openings of not less than 100 sq in (645 cm2) for a domestic dryer installed in a closet. A ventless heat pump dryer avoids the duct but still needs air movement and a condensate route, and it takes roughly twice as long per cycle.

Is a stacked pair or a side-by-side pair better?

A side-by-side pair is better in every way except width. Stacking takes the pair from 60 in (152 cm) to 30 in (76 cm) of wall, which is often the difference between a laundry existing and not existing, and it costs you the counter above the machines, the reach to the dryer controls, and the ability to service either machine without moving the other.
