Short answer

A side-by-side pair needs 60 x 36 in (152 x 91 cm) of clear interior, built up from two 27 in (69 cm) machines, 1 in (25 mm) between them and 1 in each side. A stack needs 32 x 36 in (81 x 91 cm). The 36 in depth is the machine plus the duct behind it, and the builder's 30 in (76 cm) closet will not close its doors on a full-depth front loader.

Width, built outwards from the machine#

Nothing about a laundry closet is a round number until you round it. Start at the appliance.

A US washer or dryer is 27 in (686 mm) wide. Not 26, not 28: the whole category converged on 27 in decades ago and stayed there, which is why the European 600 mm (23.6 in) machine is a genuinely different product rather than a metric restatement, a distinction pursued in imperial and metric.

Two machines side by side are 54 in (137 cm). Manufacturers ask for 1 in (25 mm) of air on each side and between the pair, for vibration and for getting your fingers behind them, so:

27 + 1 + 27 = 55 in of machine and centre gap 55 + 1 + 1 = 57 in (145 cm) of clear interior

Fifty-seven inches is the true minimum. The builder's number is 60 in (152 cm) of clear interior, and the extra 3 in (76 mm) absorbs out-of-plumb framing, a levelling foot that will not tuck in, and the fact that no closet is as square as its drawing, a subject taken further in out of square rooms and tolerance. That interior needs a 61 in (155 cm) framed opening with 1/2 in (13 mm) board each side.

For a stack, the same arithmetic gives 27 plus 1 plus 1, which is 29 in (74 cm) of clear interior as an absolute floor and 32 in (81 cm) as the number to build. The extra three inches is not comfort. It is the space a service engineer needs to get a hand down the side of a machine that is bolted to the one above it.

Depth is set by what is behind, not by the machine#

Front loaders measure 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm) deep including the door and the control panel, with 33 in (84 cm) a fair working figure for a full-size machine. Top loaders are shallower, 27 to 29 in (69 to 74 cm), but need overhead clearance instead.

Then comes the part that decides the closet.

Thirty-six inches (91 cm) of clear depth is the figure to design to, and it comes from the duct rather than the appliance. The recessed box is worth its own paragraph because it buys the closet back: set into a stud bay it is 3 1/2 in (89 mm) deep and the elbow disappears into the wall, which is the difference between doors that shut and doors that do not. Note what this means for the builder's standard: a laundry closet framed at 30 in (76 cm) interior depth, which is what a coat closet gets, holds a 33 in machine with 3 in of it sticking out past the framing. No door of any kind closes on that.

The door is the closet#

The opening the machines have to pass through is not the framed opening. It is what remains once the doors are hung and pushed as far open as they go.

The bypass row is the one that ends arguments. A pair of sliding bypass doors can only ever open half the opening, so a 60 in closet offers 29 in of access at a time. A 27 in machine passes through that with an inch to spare on each side and no chance of getting a hand in, which means a machine can be installed only by taking the doors off. For a stack, bypass doors are fine. For a side-by-side pair they are a trap, and the same rule governs pocket and sliding door dimensions everywhere else in a house.

Bifolds lose 4 to 5 in (10 to 13 cm) per side to the folded panel thickness, the pivot bracket and the jamb, and then stand 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) proud of the opening when open, which is floor you cannot stand on while loading. Ventilation openings, and why a louvre is mostly not a hole#

A gas dryer installed in a closet needs combustion and makeup air, and the International Fuel Gas Code requires openings for it. The figure commonly specified is two openings of 100 sq in (645 cm2) of free area each, one within 12 in (30 cm) of the top of the enclosure and one within 12 in of the bottom. Manufacturers' installation instructions govern, and several ask for more.

The arithmetic people miss is that a louvred door is not a 100 sq in hole. A domestic louvre panel has a free area of only 35 to 50 per cent of its face, because the blades overlap. To deliver 100 sq in of free area at 40 per cent you need:

100 / 0.40 = 250 sq in (1,600 cm2) of louvre panel

which is a section roughly 24 in wide by 10 1/2 in tall (61 x 27 cm), and you need two of them, top and bottom. A decorative louvre strip 24 x 4 in gives 96 sq in of panel and perhaps 38 sq in of free area, a third of what is asked. The undercut at the bottom of the door counts towards the low opening: a 60 in door with a 3/4 in (19 mm) undercut gives 45 sq in, useful but not sufficient on its own.

Clear floor in front, and the hallway that ruins it#

Interior dimensions are the easy half. The closet only works if there is somewhere to stand.

A front loader door opens to a projection of 22 to 25 in (56 to 64 cm) from the face of the machine. A person standing square and bending to unload needs another 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) behind the door edge. That is 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm), and it is the same clear floor space logic set out in walkway and circulation widths.

The common failure is a laundry closet opening onto a corridor. An IRC-minimum hallway is 36 in (91 cm) wide. Open a machine door that projects 25 in and 11 in (28 cm) of corridor remains, which is not a route, it is a gap. If the laundry must sit off a hallway, either widen that stretch to 60 in (152 cm) or turn the machines so the doors swing along the corridor rather than across it. Stacked machines change the geometry rather than removing it. The upper door opens at 55 to 70 in (140 to 178 cm) above the floor, so a person leans in rather than bends down, and 36 in (91 cm) of clear floor is workable. The reach to the top control panel at 77 to 80 in (196 to 203 cm) is the constraint instead, and it is dealt with in stacked washer and dryer clearances.

Plumbing, drains and the pan#

The standpipe is the fitting that decides the back wall. Codes require it to rise a minimum of 18 in (457 mm) above its trap weir and cap the height, with the exact ceiling varying by code edition, and the trap itself sits 6 to 18 in (152 to 457 mm) above the floor. Practically, the top of the standpipe lands somewhere between 30 and 42 in (76 and 107 cm) above the floor, which is above the machine's own drain hose outlet and behind the machine, so it costs depth unless it is recessed into a washing machine outlet box.

A recessed outlet box, 14 to 21 in (36 to 53 cm) wide, carries the valves and the standpipe in one 3 1/2 in (89 mm) stud bay, so the plumbing costs no depth at all, exactly as the recessed vent box does for the dryer.

A drip pan is 30 x 32 in (76 x 81 cm) and 2 to 2 1/2 in (50 to 64 mm) deep, raising the machine by that amount and eating the headroom above a stack. It only works with a drain connected. Where the closet sits over a finished floor, that build-up meets the door undercut in the way floor height changes, doors and appliances describes.

What changes the number#

Compact machines. A 24 in (610 mm) pair stacks to 67 to 71 in (170 to 180 cm) and is 25 to 27 in (64 to 69 cm) deep, so a stacked compact set fits a genuinely small closet at 29 x 30 in (74 x 76 cm) clear. It is the only combination that works in a coat-closet-sized space.

Europe. A 600 mm (23.6 in) machine at 850 mm (33.5 in) high slots under a 900 mm worktop, so the European equivalent is a run of kitchen units rather than a cupboard, and the depth follows the 600 mm carcass, not the machine.

Accessibility. The ADA 2010 Standards want a 30 x 48 in (76 x 122 cm) clear floor space at the appliance and the controls within the 15 to 48 in (38 to 122 cm) reach range, which rules out a stack: the upper machine's controls sit at 77 in (196 cm). Side by side and front loading, with a 60 in (152 cm) turning space, is the accessible arrangement. What is the minimum size for a laundry closet?

Only a stacked compact pair, 24 in (61 cm) wide and 25 to 27 in (64 to 69 cm) deep, and only with a recessed vent box or a condenser dryer that needs no duct. A full-depth 33 in (84 cm) front loader in a 30 in closet stands 3 in (76 mm) proud of the framing and no door will close in front of it.

Are bifold or pocket doors better on a laundry closet?

A pocket door delivers the full opening minus about 2 in (50 mm) and takes no floor, but it needs a 4 1/2 in (114 mm) deep stud wall and a clear pocket as wide as the leaf. Bifolds need no wall but lose 4 to 5 in (10 to 13 cm) of clear opening each side and stack 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) into the room. For a side-by-side pair the pocket or a pair of hinged doors is worth the trouble.

Does a laundry closet need ventilation?

A gas dryer in a closet does, by code: makeup air openings, commonly specified as 100 sq in (645 cm2) each, one within 12 in (30 cm) of the ceiling and one within 12 in of the floor. An electric vented dryer has no such requirement. A heat pump dryer has no code requirement either but every practical reason to be ventilated, because it dumps around 500 W into the closet.

How tall is a stacked washer and dryer?

Seventy-seven to 80 in (196 to 203 cm) for a full-size stack, from two 38 in (97 cm) machines plus a 1 in (25 mm) stacking kit and the levelling feet. Compact 24 in (61 cm) machines stack to 67 to 71 in (170 to 180 cm). Allow 4 in (100 mm) above the stack for the vent and for lifting the top machine onto the bracket during installation.

How much space do you need in front of a laundry closet?

Forty-two to 48 in (107 to 122 cm). A front loader door swings 22 to 25 in (56 to 64 cm) into the room, and a person standing and bending to load needs another 20 to 24 in (51 to 61 cm) behind that. Thirty-six inches works only for a top loader, and a closet opening onto a 36 in (91 cm) hallway leaves 11 in (28 cm) of passing space with the machine door open.

Should a laundry closet have a drip pan?

It should if it sits over a habitable space or a finished floor. A pan is typically 30 x 32 in (76 x 81 cm) and 2 to 2 1/2 in (50 to 64 mm) tall, so it raises the machine by that amount and eats into the clearance above a stack. It needs its own drain or it only delays the flood.
