Short answer

A domestic utility basin is 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm) on plan and 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) deep, rim at 36 in (91 cm) to match a counter run. Below 10 in (25 cm) of depth a filled bucket will not stand under the spout. Above 15 in you cannot reach the drain without leaning in. Allow 30 in (76 cm) of clear floor in front, 42 in (107 cm) where an appliance door opens into the same space.

Three heights, and the one people quote by accident#

A utility sink has three horizontal planes and catalogues move between them without saying which is which.

The rim is the flood level of the basin, the highest point water can reach before it goes over the edge. This is the number that has to agree with the rest of the room. The deck is the surround or worktop. On a drop-in sink the rim sits about 1/4 to 1/2 in (6 to 13 mm) proud of the deck; on an undermount the deck is the higher plane and the basin lip hides 3/4 in (19 mm) below it, the thickness of the worktop. A freestanding tub has no deck at all, which is why it never quite lines up with anything.

The third plane is the one nobody quotes: the basin floor, where your hands actually are. It is the rim height minus the internal depth, and on a standard installation it is 22 in (56 cm) above the floor.

Take all three from a finished floor datum, marked on the wall before the floor covering goes down, in the way measuring a room properly sets out. A 3/4 in (19 mm) tile bed under a freestanding tub moves every one of those three numbers, and it is always discovered after the waste is glued.

The plan sizes barely move. Depth is what varies, and depth is what a utility sink is for. A 22 x 22 x 12 in (56 x 56 x 30 cm) working volume holds 25 US gallons (95 litres), which weighs 209 lb (95 kg) before you add the sink. That number decides the carcass: a drop-in sink over a 24 in (61 cm) base unit needs the rails to carry it, and a freestanding tub needs four legs on a floor that will not flex. It is also why the old cast-iron laundry troughs sat on their own brick piers.

Where the rim height comes from#

Counter height in a house is 36 in (91 cm), and the arithmetic that produces it is set out in kitchen counter and cabinet heights: a 34 1/2 in (876 mm) base carcass, a 1 1/2 in (38 mm) top. That number was derived for a task performed on the surface, roughly 4 in (10 cm) below the elbow of a 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) adult, whose elbow stands at about 41 in (104 cm). A sink breaks that logic, because the task is not performed on the surface. It is performed at the bottom of a hole cut through it. A kitchen sink 9 in (23 cm) deep puts the working plane at 36 minus 9, which is 27 in (69 cm). A utility basin 14 in (36 cm) deep with its rim at the same 36 in puts the working plane at 22 in (56 cm), which is 19 in (48 cm) below that same adult's elbow.

Nineteen inches below the elbow is not a work height. It is a stooping height, and it is why scrubbing a pair of boots in a laundry sink puts your back out in a way that washing dishes does not.

Faucet clearance, measured from the wrong end#

Faucet height is quoted as spout height above the deck, and that is not the dimension that decides anything. What matters is the clear height from the basin floor to the spout outlet, because that is the space a container has to stand in.

Take 18 in (46 cm) of clear height as the working figure. With a 14 in (36 cm) basin that is a spout only 4 in (10 cm) above the rim, which no deck-mounted faucet delivers, so in practice you want a spout 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) above the rim and a total clear height of 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm). A pull-out spray head buys the same result differently: it lets you fill a bucket standing on the floor, which removes the height problem and the 42 lb (19 kg) lift together.

Wall-mounted faucets are the cleanest answer, because the outlet height is fixed by the pipe centre rather than by whatever fitting you buy later. Set the pipe centres at 48 in (122 cm) above the floor for a 36 in (91 cm) rim.

The floor in front#

Thirty inches (76 cm) of clear floor, measured from the front face of the sink or its cabinet, is the working minimum and matches the clear floor space the ADA 2010 Standards define for a forward approach. It is enough to stand square to the sink and no more.

The 42 in (107 cm) figure is the one that catches people out in a galley utility room, because a sink on one wall and a washer opposite look fine on a plan until the machine door opens. Rough-in heights that have to be decided first#

A utility sink takes a 1 1/2 in (40 mm) waste and trap, not the 1 1/4 in (32 mm) of a lavatory basin, because it drains a much larger volume and carries grit. Set the trap arm to enter the wall at 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) above the floor for a 36 in (91 cm) rim, which leaves room for the trap under a 14 in (36 cm) basin without fouling the cabinet floor.

Supply centres sit at 4 in (100 mm) apart for a deck faucet, and the stops belong 20 to 22 in (51 to 56 cm) above the floor so they clear the trap and stay reachable. If the sink shares a wall with the machines, keep the washer standpipe separate: it has its own height requirement, well above the sink waste, and combining them puts wash water into the basin.

Sockets belong to one side, never behind the basin, at the heights covered in socket and outlet heights. Where the sink sits in a cabinet run, the shelving above it has its own reach limits, set out in laundry shelving and cabinet heights.

What changes the number#

Accessibility. The ADA 2010 Standards cap sink depth at 6 1/2 in (165 mm) and put the rim at 34 in (86 cm) maximum, with knee space 27 in (69 cm) high extending 11 to 25 in (28 to 64 cm) back and pipes insulated or shielded. A deep utility basin is more than twice the permitted depth. There is no version of a 14 in basin that complies, so an accessible laundry needs a shallow sink for handwashing and accepts that bucket filling happens at floor level, as accessible kitchen dimensions handles the same conflict at a kitchen sink.

User height. Rim height is the one dimension worth adjusting to the person. Add or subtract half the difference between the user's elbow height and 41 in (104 cm). A 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) adult has an elbow at about 46 in (117 cm), which argues for a rim at 38 to 39 in (97 to 99 cm).

Country. European utility basins are quoted in millimetres and cluster at 600 x 500 mm (24 x 20 in) with 300 to 340 mm (12 to 13 in) of depth, sitting in a 600 mm carcass at a worktop height of 900 mm (35 1/2 in). That is half an inch below the US 36 in, which matters when hardware from both systems meets in one room. Whether it doubles as a counter. If the sink sits in a run that also folds laundry, the deck height is governed by the folding task, not the sink, and those two heights disagree. The folding figure is derived in laundry counter and folding surface heights.

Frequently asked questions#

How deep should a laundry sink be?

Twelve to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) internally. Ten inches (25 cm) is the floor, because a 5 gallon bucket stands 14.5 in (37 cm) tall and needs to sit inside the basin while it fills rather than balancing on the rim. Beyond 15 in the drain is out of comfortable reach and you are bending at the waist to scrub anything on the bottom.

How high should a utility sink rim be?

Thirty-six inches (91 cm) if it sits in a run of base cabinets, because that is the counter height it has to line up with. Our own recommendation is 38 in (97 cm) where the sink stands alone, which restores about 2 in (5 cm) of the working height that a deep basin takes away. Freestanding plastic tubs arrive at 33 to 34 in (84 to 86 cm) and are too low for most adults.

What size is a standard utility sink?

Single-bowl utility sinks cluster at 22 x 22 in and 25 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm and 64 x 56 cm) on plan, with a few at 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm) for tight cupboards. Double-bowl versions run 45 to 48 in (114 to 122 cm) overall. The depth, not the plan size, is what separates them from a kitchen sink.

How much space do you need in front of a utility sink?

Thirty inches (76 cm) of clear floor is the working minimum, matching the clear floor space the ADA 2010 Standards use for a forward approach. Forty-two inches (107 cm) is the number to build to if a washer or dryer door opens into the same strip of floor, because a front loader door swings 22 to 25 in (56 to 64 cm) into the room.

Does a utility sink need a bigger waste than a bathroom basin?

Yes. A utility sink takes a 1 1/2 in (40 mm) waste and trap rather than the 1 1/4 in (32 mm) used on a lavatory basin, because it drains a much larger volume at once and carries grit and lint. Emptying a 25 gallon (95 litre) basin through a 1 1/4 in trap takes roughly twice as long and blocks far sooner.

How high should the faucet be over a laundry sink?

High enough that the spout outlet clears 18 in (46 cm) above the basin floor, which with a 14 in (36 cm) basin means a spout 4 in (10 cm) above the rim at minimum and 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) in practice. Wall-mounted faucets solve it more cleanly than deck-mounted ones because the height is set by the pipe, not by the fitting.

Can a utility sink go under a window?

Yes, but the window sill has to clear the faucet, not the rim. With a 36 in (91 cm) rim and a spout 12 in (30 cm) above it, the sill has to sit above 48 in (122 cm), and a tall or swan-neck spout pushes that to 54 in (137 cm). A wall-mounted faucet fixed to the side reveal is the usual fix in a narrow utility room.
